The Ford Focus EcoBoost is an exercise in ultimate fuel economy. Ford has placed the award winning turbocharged 1.0L 3-cylinder in the Focus compact sedan and hatchback. First sold in the Fiesta, this 1.0L EcoBoost engine is now offered in the larger Focus and for the first time with a 6-speed automatic transmission. For the best fuel economy, this Focus EcoBoost has auto start-stop technology and 123hp.
Competitors to the Ford Focus are the Hyundai Elantra, the Honda Civic, the Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, Ford Fiesta, Kia Soul, Nissan Versa, Chevy Sonic, Chevrolet Sonic, Kia Rio, Honda Fit, Honda HR-V, Toyota Yaris, Chevy Spark, Chevrolet Spark, Chevy Cruze, Chevrolet Cruze, also the Kia Forte, VW Jetta, VW Golf, Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Golf, Dodge Dart, Hyundai Accent, maybe the Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Sentra, Fiat 500, Fiat 500X, Mazda3, Mazda2, Mazda6, Scion iM and Mitsubishi Lancer.

I'm somewhat surprized that nobody seems to talk about having it as a "go to work and grab lunch" car. In the city it's ok. If you want drag racing...sure get a bigger engine. Also a smaller, lighter and more efficient engine is a bit less poluting as well...another city thing...even the interior on mine has coat hangers in the back above the side windows, where normally you have the passanger handles or whatever they're called. So clearly it's thought out as a city/ commuter car with the occasional long drive. And it's actually very enjoyable to drive. Just my 2 cents. (Also do note the waaay cheaper taxes and insurance here in Europe, like othera have said, esspecially for young people).

I have the 2017 focus 1.0 triple and I love it. traded in a 2015 2.0 with DCT.I just didn't trust the DCT trans, other people have had pig problems with them. If only Ford had designed it with a wet clutch.Aside from dry clutch related issues Ford stepped up and warranted the TCM for 10 years or ten thousand miles, with my commute thats about a 6 year warranty. Triples are nothing new to the motorcycle world Theres no balance issues 3 divides into 360.Triples deliver power with a unique cadence often described in the mc world as a snort which is obvious when the motor is between your knees. I like the 6f15 select shift automatic It shifts great and has a fluid torque converter which I trust to last long term I like an automatic for commuting.Ive only had 1 passenger(weight) in car with me so far and theres plenty of power with the turbo.I wouldn't go challenging anyone to a race with it. Its a dependable commuter with a well built fell inside

They don't really charge a $2000 premium for the hatch, they just don't have the base model S trim in hatch form with the hubcaps and missing some other features. The SE premium is definitely justified by all the additional features though. Interestingly in a manual configuration the 1.0 and 2.0 are the same price but there's a huge jump if you go with the auto, it may be worth noting that the powershift A/T in the Fiesta and Focus is notoriously unreliable.

It is first time to make a comment. I heard that it is harder for manufactures to make rear side of a car on hatchback than sedan. For sedan, they can place body structure about trunk hinge to protect cabin, but they can't put the body structure on hatchback or wagon. In order to make the back end safer, they had to use more materials and structure study, and I guess that is why manufactures charge more for hatchback.

+shingoki528 It's also the fact that Americans don't buy hatches so its an economy of scale thing. In Europe you can't buy any version of many cars that isn't a hatch.

The problem with these small turbo engines is that they don't use very much fuel when you're gentle with them, but as soon as the turbo spools up, the economy goes out the window. I'd go the opposite way, a bigger engine tuned for economy and torque that doesn't rev very high/very well, maybe even an 8 valve (less moving parts) and tall gearing. It would feel better in every day driving as it would have more power in the rev range that you actually use.
@Starchface
@Starchface 8 жыл бұрын
+Keven Harvey Are you asking for a diesel engine? You are not wrong-small displacement doesn't automatically translate into improved economy. Most of the improvement may be coming from weight reductions. If so, it should be city driving that benefits more than highway. I wonder how the weight of this compares to the 4-cylinder model.

I have a 2018 Cruze Premier RS. Has features you’d only find in luxury cars a couple years ago. That said, I’d take my 1.4T 4 cylinder that gets 40mpg, and has more power than this 1.0 any day. Not knocking it, I’d just rather have what I have now, because, very simply, I have more power, and get the same fuel economy. And my back seat has a lot more room!

Does this 1.0L engine (still) use a timing belt? We have an '12 Focus hatch (SEL) with the 2.0L and DCT and the engine is not the problem with this car - in fact, it's been a great engine providing plenty of power and great fuel economy. I can't see paying a premium for this engine. A new clutch (rev. F) replaced under warranty seems to have corrected the transmission woes so far for us and even improved mileage by about 2mpg - probably because it's not slipping anymore.
@runforit420

The 1.0L has a timing belt but it's in an oil bath.
@modmatt1
@modmatt1 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Just looked into it further. Service guide says at "Every 150000 miles (240000 km) " "Replace timing belt (1.0L, 1.6L engine). Replace oil pump drive belt (1.0L engine).". For me, I'm still not comfortable and would stay with the 2.0L, 4cyl myself. Sounds very expensive to change if it's going to need it at or near the interval.
@runforit420
@runforit420 7 жыл бұрын
The 1.0L EcoBoost doesn't have great real-world fuel economy. It's great for European countries that tax cars based on CO2 emissions but in North America, what's really the point when the 2.0L is close to the real-world efficiency of the 1.0L EB. The 2.0L is a good engine anyway. More maintenance and similar fuel economy with the 1.0L EB.
@chrishuber8930

runforit420 we need the 1.5 turbo in North America!
@runforit420
@runforit420 7 жыл бұрын
I think North America is the last market that has the 2.0L GDI engine and PowerShift, except for (maybe) Asia-Pacific (Malaysia and the Philippines) . Even Ford Australia, because customers complained A LOT about the PowerShift (and the fact that Australia has similar percentages as to customers buying automatics versus manual cars) Australia only has the 1.5L EB and SelectShift automatic (probably the same box that's in the Escape, which does lurch at times, but doesn't shake and rattle like the PowerShift does when it fails)
@sm2by
@sm2by 8 жыл бұрын
So it does not have the "Powershift" Dual Clutch? On the ford website says it has a "Selectshift" 6 Speed Auto.
@runforit420
@runforit420 7 жыл бұрын
SelectShift is the conventional automatic. Probably the 6F15, which is a lighter version (which can't handle as much hp or torque) of the transmission in the Escape and Fusion.

so I know how many buyers this will attract in North America: zero. This engine makes perfect sense in European countries where you pay a massive amount of insurance and road tax, based solely on engine size - especially for young drivers - they can't afford anything bigger than 1.2. In America though - waste of time for them to bring it IMHO.

@jigrodrigues
@jigrodrigues 7 жыл бұрын
Kris Mier i live in europe and you re 100% right, especially in Germany, Portugal, France, Italy, Spain, Greece... We ve always had small displacement units because of the gradually heavier taxes for larger engines and for the very high fuel prices. It sounds ridiculous to the average american, but a 2.0 liter focus while it s a compact commuter in the states, in europe is a small family car with a big engine. I remember back in the mid 90s when my dad bought an escort station wagon with a 1.4 liter engine, and the block looked really big when compared with the small fiats and renaults we were used to. Nowadays i drive a 1.7 turbo diesel and even that is out of fashion. The new diesel cars on the same range are 1.5, 1.6 tops. But i digress :) On the subject in hand and given the us market, I would say the 2.0 is a better choice.
@kmier2000
@kmier2000 7 жыл бұрын
yup. In Europe 2.5 liter gets you stares like you've got a gas addiction problem, over here it was an entry level Golf until not so long ago. I have to say, I like it here more, although I wish Americans would make more wagons.
@jigrodrigues
@jigrodrigues 7 жыл бұрын
Kris Mier small displacement units from the major brands in europe were always ok but they had a problem. Yes they were economical and quite reliable, but when you had to travel with your family and luggage, there are safety and confort issues due to lack of bhp from a small displacement. Then there was a revolution with small turbo diesel engines and you could buy a torquier more powerful car for an acceptable premium. The issue was these engines were still quite small, sofisticated and sometimes unreliable. Even the japanese struggled with mechanical issues. And because they were diesel, there were more maintenance costs and were not atractive to people who made less than 15k miles a year. The 1.0 ecoboost was really important here because it provided a small and economical but powerfull unit for those low mileage drivers. The competition followed ford with their own takes, VW, PSA, Fiat and today everybody has a similar power plant in their catalogue, so there is no longer a significant power issue. Having said that I also personally prefer the american take on this. Not that I need a huge engine to move about, but I would prefer a 2.2 litre engine over my 1.7,with the same bhp, for a more distressed unit. I would be willing to pay for more fuel but returning more reliability. But the taxes over here brutal and in some cases stupid, so displacement is the enemy.

+Motormouth Canada See the big reason behind the Focus ecoboost engine being more expensive is because its imported from Valencia Spain 2nd reason Y Ford is promoting the 3 time champion engine is not just mpg, its COx, Ford is the only US brand that emits less than 200 metric ton of COx to the air despite selling more than 260k vehicles in USA and 190k vehicles in Canada year to year, ie because 90% of Ford cars out there are turbos meaning less C0x, F 150s with 3.5 TT EB emit just 50-60% Cox as of GM 6.2l and FCA v8 and no NOx as in diesels Ford is the only brand that cares for mother earth and I pay homage to them for doing that, and they cannot advertise the COx as nobody will give a damn about planet when buying cars, but Ford needs to silently market this benefit and they do it in style

+Mr Bobby Brown The Focus has received a bad reputation for it's Dual Clutch Automatic transmission. Erratic behavior along with some transmission failures. But the good news...this 1.0 engine has been in Europe for a few years before coming to North America and has proven to be very reliable. Even better, the automatic transmission that they just made available for 2016 in the 1.0 Focus is NOT the same Dual Clutch transmission used with the 2.0 engine. Hopefully this automatic in the 1.0 proves more reliable than the Dual Clutch transmission.

My 2015 focus with its 127k mile 2.0L gets 39 mpg on the highway as the 1.0 gets 40mph on highway I’d rather have the 2.0

Yeah and that two liter four-cylinder engine is extremely reliable, the transmission the power shift not so much but at least it has a 150,000 mile extended warranty due to all the issues, I think that they are great cars and the two liter with the automatic is actually pretty quick-like 7.4 seconds, the dual-clutch transmission makes it feel faster than it is but it does make some weird noises, weird vibrations, and some concerning rolling back on Hills, while in drive...

@@nicholasbabeaux2052 there’s a 150k miles extended warranty? I didn’t know that’s that’s good to know I had the clutch on mine replaced at 117k an ever sense it’s been shifting like a dream it’s really smooth now with the old clutch it use to feel like a manual transmission when taking off it use to jerk a lot

@@nicholasbabeaux2052 the 2.0 is a good engine an it’s nice it has a timing chain have you seen how hard it looks to change that timing belt on the 1.0 eco boost it’s a lot of work

@@kamryn7496 Yeah my mother-in-law bought one and she just turned 70, she really likes it and has gotten used to it and how to drive it, I don’t know what she had replaced not the whole transmission but probably the clutch and it’s been fine ever since, Fine being a relative term once you get used to the noises and the slipping and such. I just looked it up and it said the whole transmission extended warranty was 100,000 miles, and the transmission control module is 150,000 miles but I swear that they’ve extended it since then. I had one as a rental car one time and I was in drive on a hill with my foot on the break and it was rolling backwards like it was disengaged it was rather scary but nonetheless the particular rental I had was a 2017 titanium with every option the white interior and summer tires and it was super fun, it’s almost as fun as my mini Cooper S which is brand new👌🙏

“Fiesta vehicles produced on or before June 30, 2015 and Focus vehicles produced on or before November 5, 2015 are included in this program. Ford has made updates to modules in vehicles currently being produced, and will continue to monitor warranty data” 🙏 Did you have to pay for the clutch?

The DCT control module has been reworked several times with each iteration being better than before. I'd assume the bugs have been worked out by now.

The new generation Honda beats any car in this class. Even Mazda3 is lesser of a car than the new Civic.

Car of the Year only compares new models for that particular year hence the 3 and Golf were not compared with the Civic in that competition. The Golf won Car of the Year in the year it was introduced. C/D put them head to head for their annual 10 Best List and picked the Golf and 3 and explicitly excluded the new Civic due to its transmission and some ergonomic issues.

I have the sedan with the 5 speed manual and have been doing from 34-46 mpg highway with the 2 liter engine.Wow but if your going to spend 25k on a focus get the ST focus.Mine is the basic one good enough for me .That ST is much more fun to drive. The RS focus seems like way too much money.Its 3x as much as a base focus!
