Did this yesterday, a pretty easy job. I suggest taking off the first three hoses that are up front and then unbolt the housing, this will give you great access to the rear hose. Took no more than an hour and saved right around 200 dollars by doing it myself.

i wish i knew i had a leak from here before i filled the coolant res of fords coolant detailed in the manual rofl -.- that was a waste ah well xD

That's the cleanest engine I have ever seen!!! My Focus with 165k miles just developed the dreaded failed t-stat housing. Thanks for the vid. Good stuff!

Thanks for the video - it took me an hour and a half to do the job on my 2003 Zetec Focus. Everything was just like in the video. My housing had cracked and the gasket failed where the housing meets the engine. I replaced the housing, thermostat and thermostat washer. The housing washer came with the housing (all Ford brand parts). I used hose clamps with screws to replace the three bigger hoses clamps to make reassembly easier.

Thanks a lot. I did this and as you said you saved my money. The hard work for me was taking off those tension clamps from hoses. Showing how to drain the coolant out would be great but you've got plenty of videos around so. By the way it is just a screw under the driver side. I cleaned a bit the surface and everything was perfect and dry. The only thing I was worried about is after filling up with coolant. I went for a drive and the coolant was a bit down. That is because the coolant needs to settle down in the whole system and every time you drive goes down again until the system is full up. I was afraid because I didn´t uderstand why my car was completly dry, no leaks and coolant still down the level. But after a day everything was ok. There isn't better thing than fixing your car cheaper and understanding your own car so you know what is all about.

Worked a treat. The UK focus doesn't have that metal pipe in the way its a rubber hose so a little bit more room. Removing the battery and moving the battery box to the side helps a lot when trying to get to the tube at the back. Cheers Great advice 1.5 hours and it was done.

Thank you so much for your video. I think I just might be able to do this job now. However I may toss the Japanese clamps and use good ole American clamps. Also, it may be easier to remove the bottom clamps after the housing is loose from the block. Thanks again. really appreciate this.

Thanks for the Video, I replaced the valve cover gasket last year due to the oil leaking and smoking. That took, a few hours, I should of shot a video! This is next...Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the video. I just did it on my 2000 Ford Focus and it was fine (and I'm not a professional... At all!!). I didn't need to remove the battery. I think I've saved 200 €... At least 150... I only paid the thermostat housing (27 eurosding delivery cost).

Great video. I'm attempting to fix my focus tomorrow. As good as the focus is as a medium size family car I think Ford cut a few corners in selecting plastic for this.

Wow, like mentioned earlier, your engine looks brand new! :) Just a comment, at time 14:50 you say to make a note the position of the thermostat. At time 14:50 the thermostat bar is horizontal. However at time 15:53 you point out the lock on the housing and at 16:35 you place the thermostat in according the lock and the bar is vertical. Was your old thermostat in wrong by 90 degree?

I have done this repair on my 2000, 2002, and 2003 Ford Focus's all with the Zetec motor and it is a whole lot easier to remove the battery and battery tray and do it. Way easier!!!!

If you replace it with another Focus housing you'll be doing the job again in a couple years. If you use the housing from the Contour it's a perm fix. Some dealerships know this and will sell you the changed part.

Just a question next to my thermo stat i have a switch zip tied next to battery it has a copper thread on it runs to thermo fan but cant find where it screws in.

Do I need to take the terminals off the battery or can I just remove the part without doing that? Is it necessary to remove the negative off the battery before you take the part off?

hi, friend. I changed the thermostat and I realized that the hole inside the cylinder head was clogged with stone or grease. And I left it anyway, my question is, is that why my focus is overheating? How could I clean it?

if you are replacing pans, and have bad luck with leakage. Couple things, too look at . ARe you tightening them tight enough? is the pan damaged? and you know it wouldn't hurt to use some HiTemp Silicone seal where the gasket rests.

just use a torque wrench or you can easly crack the thermostat housing.. heheheh... it is made of acrilic ... and with the up and down temperatures, it tends to lose its capacity to resist force.

I have a focus 1.6 zetec auto sport and I was driving it back from Devon with a bike and trailer and the temperature gauge went up to red and back then all the way to the end of normal and back. I stopped by a nearby gas station and the water pressure was at Max. it was at medium when it was cold. I'm considering checking to see if the fuse for the fans are busted or something. but we'd usually have to push the car really hard for anything like that to happen as the car has 3 warning stages according to ford forums?

Just had a quick question to ask if I may, on mine, speaking of the temperature gauge on the cars gauge cluster, once the cars warms up, the needle always goes right to the middle and pretty much stays there (usually0, but receintly, I have noticed that evey so often, it sometimes tends to move back towards COLD, not hot but cold, it has pretty much never done this before, like I said once the engine warns up the needle goes right to the middle and usually stays there, would you happen to know why the gauge is doing this by chance, and just to let you know the thermostat on y car was replacement not too long ago, so it still pretty much new......Thanks

The electric cooling fans may be running too much or too often. A failing coolant temperature sensor may be in the cars future (coolant fans running all the time).

Just wondering about the housing bolts. Should you put anything on them before tightening? Loctite 242?

+TheWersum well have we determined where the leak is coming from.. typically there is a trail.. Believe me.. now I have an Audi,.. and having same issue. with plastic housing in the back of the block.. LEAKING.. and I can see where its leaking..

+Tim Firanov I replaced the housing at the same time. When I removed the old one, the thin wall of plastic that holds the gasket had broken and worn away. From what I see online and in my experience, it seems like the housing is usually what is causing the leak.

Hi guys, I just changed my valve cover gasket, and have dampness still behind the heat shield.. I think this could be the cause of this? my coolant did drop a little but nothing major... seems to be near the pipes (manifold) and underneath not sure if it's oil or coolant..

Well, Valve cover gasket protect from Oil leakage. Coolant under the Valve cover is not a good thing.. There should only be oil (lol or oil residue). If I understand correctly.. Coolant dampness by the heat shield,\? on the heat shield? having it drop a bit, is normal on the first run. But if you repeatedly have to add coolant then it should be a concern. sorry, it took me a while to respond.. If you have coolant dripping between the headers. I can tell you, you are looking at blown gasket or cracked head. Coolant is responsible to cool the head and the block. so it dripping by the exhaust.. something letting it sip through, what causes it is gasket or cracked head. Check dipstick for coolant on oil dipstick. Also. When you start the engine COLD, like fist start, open the coolant reservoir is see if it bubbling, while you play with the throttle butterfly.

Thanks for the reply, still a little damp nothing major, I think it could be the seal on the thermostat housing on the side of the engine, I hear it's a common problem as the plastic with heating and cooling can become brittle whiche surrounds the rubber washer/o-ring, I looked it up, if it gets any worse I will be sure to get a garage to check it out, engine is otherwise like new with full service history and just over 60k miles on it.

Maritza Betancourt If it came with the gasket, there is no point of using silicone. But, if you want to be reassured, u can use a little bit. I did not use it at all, mine with gasket, the design of the pan, along with the gasket, it did the right seal.

+Jermaine Watson back trace work, and u should find what happened. - bolts tight? - Housing gasket in place? - anything else is broken, that is not covered in this video? If you look under the car you should have a good hint where things were dripping off,

could this cause an overheating issue while idle? if coolant is leaking out of the housing?

Generally yes, and yes I did have same situation. Low fluids, low ventilation = rise in temp. especially last years hot summer. .. NOW some of course start commenting other things may involve. BUT, if everything else works. In this isolated case, then YES.. it will rise your temp like it did on mine, and for while I had to add coolant to make it to the time to make that video and change that TStat.

Veyron640 sweet thanks. i checked the cooling fans and radiator hoses. coolant level was low a couple weeks back and thought that was the problem so i added some 50/50 but it still overheats when I'm idle. then dissipates when i drive off.

Question, do you know what could be causing white smoke coming from my ford focus... i dont see any oil coming from the valve cover.... my question is... i attempted to replace an oilpan gasket... and im wondering if i didnt replace that properly...

White smoke usually means coolant going into ur cylinder and coming out the exhaust. Could have a blown head gasket

its not coming out of the exhaust. its coming out of the outside of the engine.

***** - White smoke coming FROM the engine..,generaly. oil residue, any SPRAY residue. stuff like that. but that stuff is ONLY temporary, Unless, you got something leaking.. which in that case.. would make sense, that if you did NOT put together that oil pan assembly right.. oil is dripping on to that HOT exhaust pipe. Headers are in the front on this car, which means, the down pipe loops under the engine, right under that pan. I say.. if its enough to make smoke.. its enoough to make it very noticeable that your OIL pan, would be verrrrry messsy.. oil.. n sheet.. lol.. How is the Oil levels?

endy lopez pretty sure it was not NAPA,, I know went to several stores for info,, Im pretty sure I ended up bying the filter kit from Oriellys

It's better to buy the whole assembly 49.99 at advance auto. And not worry about any of that plastic crap for a while

same problem on a 2003 Ford Escape with the 2.0 Litre 4 cylinder engine. Apparently this is a common problem. Plastic junk!

Tim Horton ford went to plastic valve covers very shitty unreliable. silicone gaskets and shit

Procrastination seems to be one of the problems here. Tapping of the screwdriver, etc. Finish the job, clean up, and put the tools away.

Would be nice if Ford uses metal housing to begin with.. Being cheap with plastic parts is the reason I'd steer away from Ford, GM, BMW...all together

just remove the thermostat.... it is worthless... shouldn`t even exist in most cars.... unless you live in cold countries.. heheheh.. that must be your case.. then you shoudn`t remove it.. it makes your car heat and reach the working temperature, which improves the burning of the mixture of the fuel in the cylinders... sorry for the english,it is my second language.
