One day, perhaps, somebody is going to drive a PHEV from full to empty and give real economy figures. I'm not sure I trust a journalist who has only had a car for a morning. Here your talking 2000+ miles between fillups. Mmm. Let's see it. My full hybrid manages around 620 KMs between fillups.

@Richard Ingram Petrol Ped has done an excellent review of an IONIQ travelling in hybrid/EV an ICE modes on an extensive drive. Very informative, and useful things to consider. A lot of people who review PHEV's make it seem like you only ever run on EV, which is mostly the case if you are confined to town driving, and you have off street parking.

I bribe that Ford is claiming 63MPG if you don’t charge it, so on long journeys 50-60MPG should be possible if you don’t have a heavy right foot. The WLTP testing regime is appalling and is based on a short drive of 12 miles at mixed speeds. It needs to be replaced with a proper 100 miles or so test for PHEV cars.
@mattmarlow4166
@mattmarlow4166 2 жыл бұрын
Don’t know if you are still interested but I’ve had this car for 3 weeks. Done 600 miles, 520 were electric. Being told since day 1 I’m clocking in at 175 mpg and it’s only going up and up as I use electric journeys for 90% of my journeys. Currently it costs around £2ish to charge up but that’s all going to change next month in UK as energy prices are up. When it’s cold I’m getting about 30 miles and when it’s warm I’m getting close to 40. Huge change !

@@tomhall6232 I went from tiguan r line tech (TDI) to the st line x PHEV and I really thought I was going to regret it but I don’t at all. The ride quality is very good (even on 19 alloys). Fuel consumption excellent even when using the petrol engine. Interior trim is good but not ground breaking as is the infortainment screen but everything else is great. Seats are very comfortable and drivers is electronic. I do find it difficult to fault the car and is one of the more modest priced PHEV. Get anywhere between 32 (cold day) to 40 (warm and eco mode) miles on electric. I also think it looks real good. Nearly got the top trim but ended up with st line x as it looks better IMO and less money.

@willrogers3702
@willrogers3702 3 жыл бұрын
The testing regime for fuel efficiency is something like a 12 mile course, so most cars over-achieve their MPG. It’s worse for PHEV cars because of how they work.
@johnbradshaw5900
@johnbradshaw5900 3 жыл бұрын
Economy figures for PHEVs depend entirely on how they are used. That is true for any car but with PHEVS it is extreme. Charge one of these every night and if typical use is 30 miles or so and it will not use any petrol most days. If people don't charge it or drive long distances every day then economy it will be a heavy petrol powered SUV. There is a lot of negativity about PHEVS at the moment but if use case is right they are an excellent compromise solution.
@willrogers3702
@willrogers3702 3 жыл бұрын
John Bradshaw They are based on a 14.4 mile test route that includes a range of speeds. If you drive in and around town then this means mostly using electric. I drove a VW Passat GTE this weekend and around town it did 70-80mpg quite easily. However on a longer journey and the MPG dropped to just about 40MPG which is terrible. As someone who drives long distances for work (but infrequently) it would mean losing money every mile I drive since the AFR rates only pay back for about 46mpg. Around town, a PHEV gives you electric range anxiety, and when you on long journeys, does nowhere near the MPG of a diesel.
@johnbradshaw5900
@johnbradshaw5900 3 жыл бұрын
@@willrogers3702 PHEVs include an electrical running utilisation factor of around 60% which is why mpg is so good in official figures. If you do operate as an EV most of the time then economy is outstanding. There is no range anxiety with a PHEV as long as there is petrol in the tank.
@willrogers3702
@willrogers3702 3 жыл бұрын
John Bradshaw I specifically said “electrical range anxiety” because I know several PHEV drivers who will plan every journey around maximum EV mode running. Yeah, you can switch to petrol, but if you had an EV you wouldn’t need to worry! 60% electrical utilisation is a joke. How come a PHEV on a long journey ends up with the same, if not worse, MPG than a standard petrol equivalent? People made similar arguments to yours, as to why the BMW i3 with range extender was so good. I have spoken to a lot of i3 REX drivers, and most never used the range extender!

I've had this car for 3 months now, would I buy it again if I knew then what I know now ? Definitely not, too many poor design issues. I've had total loss of power twice, couldn't even get into the car, AA out twice. To open the bonnet you have to have the passenger door open, but you can't open the passenger door with a total power failure, the poor AA man had to climb over the back seats into the boot to access a smaller battery in the boot floor to jump start the car in order to open the passenger door to release the bonnet catch. Rear parcel shelf catches on items in the boot even when they're below the window line. Light in the boot goes out after 10 seconds with the boot still open, so if you're loading your boot in the dark you have 10 seconds to get everything in or you're doing the rest in total darkness. Wing mirror traffic warning lights come on even when there's no other cars on the road....the list goes on

Mild Hybrids have their place in the car market and we should all applaud when manufacturers offer them as they do help reduce emissions. Many buyers may not have the confidence to go "all electric" (needlessly) worried about range. With a mild hybrid with a short EV range and the owner soon realizes they live within the limited range most days and thereby gain the confidence to purchase an all electric later. Even if someone's primary motivation is reducing BIK tax if it converts them into an EV advocate, all's good that ends well.

The Kuga is my backup choice on my company car list, just in case I can’t get the Model 3. Apparently it does do 50+ mpg if you don’t plug it in, which is actually impressive, and beats most diesels. It’s more of an “around town” car that does ok fuel economy out of town. I agree that a proper EV is better, but it is far better than most of the rubbish non-hybrids
