I love the Ridgeline (I own one since 2020) but Honda missed an amazing opportunity by not giving the Ridgeline Trailsport more ground clearance. Mind boggling..

They've missed a lot of opportunities since the start. The Ridgeline has always been a great idea but Honda kept flubbing too many details for it to take off. The success of the Maverick has shown that the fact that it's not a "real" truck, as so many claim, was never the problem. Hopefully Honda has learned a lesson.

Nah it was lazy. They are getting ready for a redesign and didn’t want to waste resources doing any real sort of modification on an outgoing model. It’s a waste of money to get a trailsport. I got a 2024 sport. Love it. It’s a hella good truck. Gotta a better lease deal by a mile on ridgeline over maverick. And the payload of tremor is significantly lower with that clutch pack and upgraded suspension

Did anyone notice how easily he crawled the Honda up the last part of "left hook" after he put it into sand mode? IVTM4 in "Sand" is capable of sending something like 75 to 90% of engine torque to the rear wheel with traction. Even with it's pathetic clearance and approach angle, and lack of under body protection, the Honda still managed to crawl up that left hook. I am surprised and amazed. I have seen some mighty 4X4s struggle on that same section. With many of them cutting power at the worst time. Man Honda, give us recovery points, 2 more inches of clearance and a few skid plates, and what a comfy off roader you could offer!
@69Harveyb1

Apparently it's underbody protection was sufficient : ) The Maverick on the other hand, with its increased clearance still managed to tear it's poor (fake) undercarriage protection near off.
@BillyBobTup

@@69Harveyb1 You make a good point, and I did notice that. However, the Ford tore some fabric which was there for what? Sound deadening? The RL apparently had no fabric at the same place, or it would have been torn completely off, since it would have been maybe 2" lower? As it is, I guess the Honda just skidded along on something metallic, but in this soft mud not enough to damage anything? Or, perhaps at that particular spot, the Honda was tucked up high enough to not make enough contact with that obstacle to damage anything? Or, perhaps the Honda was not in exactly the same spot, and simply did not even go over that rock? Who knows? But, I do know that the Honda( I own a non-Trailridge with the same specs) is too low, does not have enough under body protection, and the approach and other angles are too low for comfort. Hence my amazement that the Honda made it up without major damage, or made it at all. And I am not surprised that the Maverick, with much better off road specs, had an easy time of it. ........... I will say this for the Honda, which I did not previously realize: They did add that small metal skid plate under the oil pan. At least that is something, and a very important something. Since I have known of more than one RL that has torn a hole in that oil pan while trying to off road with such low clearance. .......... I have owned a RL continuously since 2008 ( one 08 and one 21), and I love them overall. They are my fav vehicle that I have ever used in 8" or less of snow and ice. They have a great AWD system, one of the best. But with some minor changes I would be way less nervous taking one on some trails. So close, Honda! Maybe the 2025s? Hurry Honda, I am getting real old!

@@HardRoadz Not much experience in mud but when I first got the truck, I was out with my daughter and drove a lap around a lake in my area. About halfway around, there was a road that branched off and went down to the beach. We parked there and took a short day-hike. Hiking back, a freak storm hit and it rained for about 15 minutes. So now that simple road out was a pretty steep rutted muddy mess. I'm like, "How are we supposed to get out of this now?!" Not to worry, the Ridgeline made short work of it. In my old RAV4, we would not have gotten out of that, I'm sure of it. As for snow, last winter was a hard winter for my area and I love how the Ridgeline handled the snow. Biggest problem I had is that I almost got sideswiped by a Chevy Silverado (not trying to bag on that truck, I think the driver was the problem).

My wife has a 2019 Ridgeline RTL-E. It has a great leather interior and is roomy in both rows. She loves it. She has 49,000 miles. We have had four recalls, the fuel pump the most serious one. Mostly reliable. One night the engine fan would not off off, I had to disconnect fuse so battery did not get drained, and replaced it next day. Otherwise pretty good. Handles and rides so much better than my Tacoma. I do recommend the Ridgeline.

Me too, I got a 2023 RTL-E and I really like it. I don't need a big giant truck that's priced like a house, the Ridgeline is the right fit for me. For the recreational stuff that I do (mainly going out to do desert-hiking), the Ridgeline has been great for that. There were a lot of trailheads that I couldn't get to in my old RAV4, it's been fun to revisit them in my Ridgeline where I could make it to the trailhead. Not saying that it's some killer rock-crawler off-roader but for the fairly casual stuff that I do, it works great. I'm not doing anything heavy-duty. Last year we had a heavy winter and the Ridgeline handled awesome in the snow.

@louisperich6678
@louisperich6678 Ай бұрын
Its AWD actually makes it better for most off-roading situations than competitor’s 4WD, given the right tires and an aftermarket lift kit. It is unsuited for hardcore rock crawling and similar extremes due to its non-locking differential, low crawl ratio, and very limited ability to increase tire diameter, and from the factory has worst-in-class ground clearance/approach/departure angles, It also lacks the ability to mount a winch without extensive custom modifications, and there is exactly one aftermarket tow hook solution which requires cutting slots in the lower front bumper. But the basic vehicle itself, off pavement up to and including moderate conditions, more than holds its own.

@@louisperich6678👆this. It’s super capable in mud and snow. It just isn’t a rock crawler. There is a dope video of a break locker mod on JonDZ Adventuring KZfaq that makes it a rock crawling beast. I don't need the capability of a real truck for towing or hauling, just a daily with a bed to haul my mountain bikes to the trail, trips to the beach and then just hose it down afterwards. Smaller size also mean easier to navigate and park for normal daily stuff like going to work, errand runs, grocery trips etc.

Also to clarify one of the things you got wrong, not every maverick was made in Mexico. I do have a first production before anyone asks. Never had any major issues. It has preformed better than I expected. I bought it, not expecting to tow and I've done a ton of it. You also get into cost, I never considered a Ridgeline because they are way too expensive. Considering that it's a midsize truck but it is comparable to the compact trucks, tells me that it's not worth that price tag.

The Ridgeline is a great truck, but Honda has never done it justice. It needs a trim with 9-10” inches of ground clearance. Subaru did it with their Wilderness models 🙄. I shouldn’t have to take a brand new truck and pay to get a 3” lift kit installed that could be iffy.

It always surprises me how much mud and gnarly stuff these vehicles can drive through. It was clear the additional momentum given to the Maverick gave it an advantage on the hill climb. Regardless both trucks would get up the cottage laneway. Good job, you drive these trucks through worst conditions than most people do with their Ford F150 raptors.

@@seruresto1386 This video is silly to begin with. 99% of owners of both these will never be driven on anything that a small sedan cannot do. Smooth dirt roads etc. No one is taking these things truly off road. Off road packages in this segment is cosmedic. I doubt that many full size trucks ever leave the pavement except to do an illegal u-turn in the median.

Have those exact Falken Wildpeaks on the wife's Bronco Badlands with steely wheels and optional tires. They are a fantastic tire for a daily driver in western Canada,especially in winter. Mud....yeah but i sure wouldn't wanna go deep. The Bronco Sport and Maverick off road.....pretty close. The odds of many using either the Ridgeline or Maverick for serious off road is slim. We've managed alot of snow,some mud....about all these trucks will ever see.

Traded my 23 Colorado Z71 for a 23 Ridgeline RTL and love it. Yeah I gave up clearance and torque, but for 99.9% of my daily driving, the Honda smokes the Colorado- the trunk alone is worth the admission price. Glad he mentioned the nature of the power delivery (linear vs turbo) because I hit that same phenomenon in Colorado vs Ridgeline towing the same trailer up a small curved hill - I would have to gas, gas, gas then BOOM in the Colorado vs a much more linear delivery with Ridgeline. Bith great trucks but love my Honda. Honestly impressed by the Maverick as well, looks like a hoot for off-road!

Why? If you want all that just get a different truck. Why do I need ground clearance to go to Lowe’s to get some plywood? That plywood fits better in the Ridgeline than the Maverick. I go on vacation I want that sweet smooth ride. The most off road I would maybe get is a parking area at a fair or to cross a pasture field. Folks seem to never understand who it is that the Ridgeline appeals too. We are not snot nosed teenagers fired up to go off-roading and break stuff. We are older gentleman that just want to have the utility and the smooth ride. Ridgeline is perfect for us.

Agreed. After 2 full size Rams and a couple of Fords I dont want to drive a full size truck anymore. They barely fit in the garage and theyre hard to park. The Ridgeline is the truck for me. The V6 and wide comfy interior, trunk and swing out tail gate is what I need. A lift kit would be nice looking but if im going off road im buying a short wheel base Bronco.

Fantastic video. I own a Ridgeline for exactly all the reasons you showed. It's a city, commuting, truck. It's not for hauling a boat, going bouldering, or driving off-road all the time; but it does those okay while being a fantastic on-road truck with great comfort. The Mavrick seems like a perfect compliment; something that's a little lower cost, a little less on the medium duty work; but a great option for people who want a budget truck that can do a little bit of everything or be a more serious off-road truck than the Honda. Great review; really great info and lots of good testing that we love to see.

I have a 2023 Ridgeline and I love it. Your use case is spot on, great commuter vehicle and very comfortable (and quick) on road. I was almost thinking about holding out for the 2024 model year and I'm glad I didn't because I was super disappointed in the trailsport. Really all they did is put different tires on it. No extra drive modes, no lift, even though there are plenty of aftermarket options for that. Skid plate was a miss too, there are lots of skid plates that cover various areas for the Ridgeline available aftermarket too. I briefly considered the Maverick tremor but was put off by the tow capacity because I do tow with my Ridgeline and it does well, and certainly do use the bed to haul stuff. I think my biggest disappointment with the 2024 model year was the deletion of the in bed audio on all trims (to my awareness). It's one of my favorite features on my 2023 RTL-E which was replaced by the trailsport in the American line up. The trailsport also doesn't have power in the bed, my rtl-e has a 400w plug back there and LED bed lights whereas the trailsport uses incandescent. Not a big deal for the lights but still note worthy. I'll eventually get some more aggressive tires for mine and go up a size too. I believe you can put a 265 tire on them and risk some minor rubbing. Stock is 245 and I'll probably split the difference and go with a 255, which will effectively give me an extra 1/4" of ground clearance. Not much but it could make a difference. I also ripped out my lower front fascia, being that air dam up front you mentioned was dragging. No issues with having it removed and it makes the truck "look" a little taller too. Over time I'll add skid plates to the front, middle and back but I really don't go extreme with offroading, or do it on a regular basis, but it's a great peace of mind thing for if I need it

I have a 2023 Bronco Sport Badlands, which underneath is very very similar to the Maverick Tremor. Same engine, same rear clutch unit, just better suspension and a taller ride due to factory lift. It’s got just a bit more clearance and much better approach departure angles than the tremor but the powertrain is not the issue. It’s clearance. I went overlanding with a group last year and my Bronco was keeping up, and even doing BETTER than some Taco’s on 33’s that were getting stuck on a sharp incline. I never got stuck going up a sharp gatekeeper but most Tacomas I was running with did. However, that being said, because of its low ground clearance I completely taco’d my exhaust and had to limp back home because it was rubbing against my driveshaft. Had to wire it to the frame away from the driveshaft which was a pain to trail fix. To this day I swear by the Maverick Tremor/ Badlands capability, but its ground clearance is a very strong downside. Even with a lift it will never get close to the flexibility a body on frame vehicle can have with tire sizes and lift/ suspension upgrades. I’m actually currently looking at a Bronco 2 Door Wildtrak just because I want something that won’t make me get sweaty palms when presented with more challenging terrain that I can blow up my underside.

really nicely done. I appreciate when you sit in the back seat, and especially a comparison like this. I have no need for off road worthiness, that being said I love the Ridgeline packaging but couldn't stand the 23 and below lacking a center console.... could not stand the pull down arms. I bought a 23 Maverick Hybrid in November and when it came down to it the interior room was great for the sizing and like you showed not a huge difference in the back seat, but the big winner for me was the hybrid powertrain. I am regularly getting over 40 MPG on a tank. That being said had the Ridgeline had a hybrid it would have been a harder decision.

Just bought a 2024 Ridgeline Black Edition and I'm loving it so far. The comfort, versatility, capability and just overall functionality are unmatched by any other midsize truck. That said, I think the TrailSport trim is a missed opportunity. If Honda had at least offered a suspension lift and added some belly protection, I would have gone with the TrailSport instead of the Black Edition, but I decided on the BE for the extra features and I'll eventually customize it to add some off road capability. I traded my 2023 Frontier Pro4x which I never liked from day one...hated the bizarre transmission behavior and the infotainment system crashed at least once a week. I commute 2 hrs per day in my vehicle, so if I hate driving it, it's gotta go.

Maverick is a mini/small truck. The Ridgeline is a mid-size truck. It'd be like comparing a Chevy Malibu (midsize car) to a Crown Vic (full size car). The Ranger Tremor would be the truck to go head-to-head with the Ridgeline. With that said, good video and it showed how well the little Maverick did. But Ford should NOT have skimped with 'paper' undercarriage protection. They should have used the FX4 skid plates. Poor call there.

I liked the look of the Tremor and capabilities but honestly liked the BAP features are barely more than BAP with better rims/tires/capabilities and 25:48 resale value. Ford needs to figure out 4K towing and maybe a little more payload for the Tremor. Ridgeline significantly bigger, nicer ride I'm sure but not same size class IMO. A mini-Honda truck would be interesting. Someone besides Ford and Hyundai will take a swing at mini-truck and I love the segment and more competition will make it better. The Maverick may be smaller and have questionably reduced load capacities(I have hauled and towed more lol as other Maverick chassis are rated). However for off-road ability there is not another comfy driving unibody vehicle that can hang with it aside from the Bronco Sport.
