Ford's improved MK4 model Mondeo looks to revive the flagging medium-range family hatch sector. Does it have what it takes to break the spell of the premium marques?
INTERESTED IN THIS VEHICLE...GET IN TOUCH HERE www.osv.ltd.uk/contact-us/
The revised fourth generation Ford Mondeo pulls out all the stops in a bid to convince British buyers that the medium-range 'D'-segment family hatch isn't a thing of the past. With tight pricing, comfort-orientated drive dynamics, the sort of cabin tech you might expect to be the preserve of the premium German marques and the option of hybrid power, there looks to be life in the Mondeo yet.
Background
A lesser manufacturer than Ford might well have given up. After all, sales of mainstream 'D'-segment medium range family saloons and hatches have collapsed in recent years, falling to around a third what they once were as recently as ten years ago. The Mondeo had the unfortunate distinction of being a car that got markedly better with every consecutive generation but which was rewarded with progressively worse sales. Can this current improved MK4 model turn things around?
It has market conditions on its side. The economy has improved and the love affair with premium badges couldn't last forever. As the used market became flooded with BMWs and Audis, resale values crumbled. If Ford could step in with a genuinely convincing reason to buy something bigger and more luxurious, buyers might return to the fold. To that end, the Blue Oval has pulled out all the stops with this improved fourth generation model.
Driving Experience
Ford's has slimmed down the engine choices on offer. Most customers choose a 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine good for either 150PS or 190PS, both variants featuring single variable geometry turbocharger technology. The 150PS and 190PS diesels are available with Ford's Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, which offers a seamless transition between front-wheel drive and all-wheel-drive performance to automatically enhance traction and road-holding when needed. There is also a 165PS 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol unit.
Buyers can alternatively opt for a Mondeo Hybrid. Unlike the hybrid option you get in a rival Volkswagen Passat, this set-up isn't one of the pricey plug-in sort, which means you don't get astonishing all-electric style fuel returns - but then you do without the Passat's outlandish asking price too. Instead, a Mondeo Hybrid has the more conventional type of petrol/electric set-up you'd find in a slightly cheaper but smaller and less powerful rival like Toyota's Prius where the engine cuts in and out to assist electric propulsion as and when required. In the Ford's case, that powerplant is a 187PS 2.0-litre unit whose efforts are supplemented by a 88kW electric motor driving the front wheels. There's another electric motor for regenerative charging only and a lithium-ion battery pack with an output of 35kW and a capacity of 1.4 kWh, the whole set-up operating via the kind of CVT auto gearbox that's a normal feature in hybrids of this sort.

I kept my Mondeo for 20 years. Absolutely loved it and replaced it with a Mark 4. Still miss my old one but this newer one is big and beefy. Boot like a skip, excellent drive and so impressive in looks, interior and sheer space. Personalised plate to enhance this beauty!

Nice to see an honest review by someone who isn't infatuated by German badges! I'm considering it for a company car, and can get a fully-loaded Mondeo Vignale for at least £70-£100 a month cheaper than it's similarly, but not as well spec'ed German rivals. This review has pretty much made my decision!

One of the best in-depth reviews I have seen, All models covered, not just the Hybrid and a great comparison to the alternatives, Currently driving a 2018 Focus Titanium Saloon 1.5 diesel, which I love, and looks great, but as Ford has stopped doing Focus saloons in UK and Ireland, I may turn to the Mondeo Hatch next time out. Still get 60 mpg from the Focus which is better than the Corolla Hybrid on the roads I drive, so would have no problem adjusting to the Mondeo. Not a lot of difference between them inside and uses the same Sync 3 system. Again Great review

I have driven the new shape Mondeo hybrid estate and it does become powerful and engaging to drive with nearly 190ps when you deselect the eco button. Granted, it takes time to get used to but when you learn it it can be both engaging and very efficient. The best MPG I have achieved was 61+ around town and about 50 on a mixed drive including motorway speed drives. What most reviewers miss is they compare it too much to the diesel. The Hybrid is an efficient alternative for those who don't drive as many miles to warrant a diesel but still need a big car. If you do 10,000 miles or less a year the hybrid is well worthwhile and you don't have anxiety of clogging up a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Even in my 6 months of having one as a company car I have done over 13,000 miles already and enjoyed it very much. For £35k it's a lot more car for the money (massage seats etc) than anything else and it looks great and drives very nicely. I'd strongly recommend the Mondeo, whichever model you choose.

@@msjcars2317 Unfortunitaly, Now 2023 , Ford have discontinued the Mondeo, The Focus Saloon/Sedan and the Fiesta in Europe to make way for electric cars. I drove the Ford Kuga 2.6 Petrol Hybrid last saturday, Nice but does not compare to a Saloon/sedan. It has its advantages but driveability is ot one of them.

I'd like to see a new European focused Mondeo again as they did with the revitalizing of the current focus, now that Ford doesn't have to cater to the North American market with the same car which turned this Mondeo into a couch compared to the agility of the previous one.

I love the Mondeo Estate. Ford is phasing out the Fusion in the states even though it’s a good all around sedan with great mileage even with a 2.5 I4 gasoline engine. Americans don’t buy Estates, but instead prefer SUVs and CUVs. Brits and Aussies like their estates with diesels and manual sticks, I like them too but those vehicles aren’t marketed in the U.S.

Australian Titanium 2.0 diesel station wagon here. Has all you mentioned, plus a very nice dct gearbox, no issues. I like it a lot. Negatives: turbo lag or throttle response when you take off, parking sensors are slow to engage (had vw polo before, way better), not built for Australian Sun, both sun visors fell off. Also, the adaptive cruise control is cancelled when breaking below 20km/hr

Your "New Labour" quip, is editorial. It goes both ways. Infers that 'Tories' are snobs and Labourites are pragmatists. BUT. It's fair comment. Here in Aussie, the same is broadly true. ps. why are Brits wedded to 'manuals' ? - was in UK last month and as usual had trouble getting an auto.. Most Aussies & Americans seem to agree. All that technology. And a loose 'nut' is behind the wheel.

@OSV Why are you comparing the Mondeo wagon to the Kuga????? The Edge is on the same platform as the Mondeo, S-Max and Galaxy. Hence if one wants the same sized SUV from the Blue Oval instead of a Mondeo Estate AWD, the Edge would be the same sized variant, NOT THE KUGA!!!!
@samueltripp1624

I have been looking for my next company car and have test driven Audi, Mercedes, Volvo, Peugeot, Toyota, BMW, Honda, Ford, Skoda, Lexus and Citroen - unfortunately, when it comes to tech the Germans do take it, by a mile I might add. Every car I have tested that wasn't one of the 'premium' German brands had infotainment systems that make a scroll of papyrus seem modern and reversing cameras that look like they use a potato as a lens. Shame really, as I'm not a badge tart and care more about features, but tech/inoftainment in modern cars is generally unacceptable for 2019 except for the German brands. And whilst other models may have more features as standard whilst everything on the Germans is an extra cost, I have on the whole found them to be implemented badly and that is also unacceptable in my opinion. And with pretty much every other brand I have tested there seems to be a lack of responsiveness when pulling out, for example, so the engines are generally less refined, less optimised and also usually much louder. I get that some non-badge-tarts like to preach about it and make out like people who buy expensive brands do so only for the badge, and some do, but lets not be ingorant - generally you get what you pay for with cars still.

I think the new Focus is much more tempting, looks a lot better (particularly the ST Line variants) and fulfills all my current needs. I think the Mondeo's competitors both inside its own range and from other companies is too strong. Personally if I'm in this class I'm probably looking more towards the Insignia. I can't think that the Mondeo is going to last much longer in the European market despite what Ford claims
