A lot of ads say that OBD1 scanners are for vehicles up until 1996. However, there was an exemption for trucks with a GVW of 8800 and over to still use OBD1 The change over to OBD2 didn't take place until a couple of years later.

Thx. I got my adapter today. Am having a heck of a time just getting the casing off the OBD1 port. Blasted split year E350 van. 1996, but manufactured in 1995. It has TWO ports!!! My #2 reader can not read the 2 port! So, I'm trying to get the casing off of the #1 port. It seems to be stuck tight. I got the adapter, which can be returned if it doesn't work. Also, I ordered the #1 scanner just in case. Which also leads to the need for the extension, which costs more than the scanner! Such a mess....

I'm investigating that same problem. I've got a 2007 Honda Odyssey (OBD2) and a 1992 Ford F-150 (OBD1). I did find a scanner, other than that Ford scanner which I'll probably get anyway for the price, and it's an Innova 3170. It's an OBD2 scanner but comes with a bunch of OBD1 adapters so I'm assuming that it knows how to read and use the OBD1 codes. It isn't cheap and is on sale now for $ 260. The adapter kit sells for $ 100 all by itself so the scanner is really only about $ 160 - not too bad.

First of all I have an obd one vehicle and that "thick" book has 2 languages in it so cut that in half. Also you don't have to go through ALL the codes just what are sent to the scanner and BTW they're listed in numerical order. I had exactly 2 codes. I fixed the issues problem solved 👍👍✌🏻✌🏻

the inexpensive obd-ii scan tools only work with fully-compliant vehicles made 1998 and newer, before that year obd-ii was a can of worms and obd-1 was a completely different story. the reason the $35 ford scan tool came with the big code book is because on those early ford systems a code doesn't always mean a part is bad, there are tests that have to be completed for each code to find out what is actually bad, that's what the big book is for. obd-ii is very different in that it is always testing all of the components in the system so it knows when a part has gone bad, and tells you so. in other words if you get an o2 sensor code on an obd-1 system, don't assume that replacing the sensor will fix the problem. you have to complete the diagnostic test to find the real problem.

Finding 1995 Ford Contour or Mercury Mystique OBDI connector difficult inside a black box attached to the far right of engine compartment on the driver's side to the right of the windshield motor. Stuck after 24 years had to snap it off the side & half the holders to open the black box & release connectors. Read the book. Not just a matter of hitting test & getting results what is or isn't the matter. Codes 10 & 111 are other-tests not problems.

Nope JC, Not you. I tried the jumper wire method before going to the Advance Auto, but had trouble after seeing the first code blinks. The first was a 33 code, then 33 again. Then I got a bunch but they either went faster or slower than the 33 so I couldn't tell if I was getting a 1 or 2 ones, or what, so I had hoped to find out at the store, but no luck. Now I am using the multimeter method on my Throttle position sensor since it seems to buck/sputter when I increase the throttle like pulling hills or entering highways. Planning to meter other parts like Map Maf, etc.

That came from China. It doesn't work! The tester is o.k. Get a digital Ford code tester. If you have vacuum at the EGR at idle, replace the charcoal canister purge valve. If the codes say oxygen sensor running rich, replace the MAP sensor. If your plugs are fuel fouled, it's either the MAP sensor or CTS or injectors or pressure regulator.

@marzsit98333 жыл бұрын
obd-ii was introduced in a very confusing way.. by 1995 all manufacturers were supposed to be using the standard but a lot were not, obd-ii didn't become the universal standard until 1998. before then, it was anything goes with each manufacturer.. gm and ford started putting obd-ii connectors on early 90's vehicles but they did not adhere to the wiring pinout so special cables were needed for those vehicles. snap-on and otc came up with a solution where the obd-ii cable had a slot for a small circuit board to be inserted that would rewire the cable for those vehicles that were not standard.
@rickbuonauro85772 жыл бұрын
I worked for Ford during all that. The Federal Government gave any manufacture who experimented with OBDII in their vehicles before the mandate would be given much more room and tolerance when the mandate went into effect. Which we needed cuz we had all kinds of issues. . Ford started in mid year 1994 Rangers had the connector that didn't work unless you had the later GEM that was setup to communicate on that protocol.
