I have a F150 2001 manual transmission with only 59,000 miles and it just lost the odometer. I will do all of the disassembly that you showed. Thank you for taking the time to make life so much less painful for so many of us. Wonderful presentation.

DONE! and thanks! I bought my 2000 F150 in October of 2019, and the intermittent odometer has probably been an issue for 15 years. True on the gear indicator comment by Ralph Chapman... the tabs are easy to release... but getting the gear indicator assembly aligned and reinstalled was a bit difficult. While I had the cluster out, I cleaned out the years of dust that had accumulated behind the bezel... looks great now... and I don't have to take photos of my rarely-showing odometer any more! By the way, all the terminals looked bad on mine after viewing with a USB microscope... I re-soldered them all. I used tacky flux like that used on printed circuit board trace repair and covered all the solder points. I did use rosin-core solder also, but this technique worked great... little cones of solder at each connection.

i bought a 2007 new off the showroom and i make my money off mileage and less than a week later mine went out. ford refused to fix it so i learned how to do this. and now its doing it again. but i don't use it for work and i'm to old and lazy to fix it now. oh and really good video one of the best i have seen so far

I live in Ct and they have emissions testing and unfortunately I was not going to be able to reregister my truck do to the fact that they can’t test if mileage isn’t visible. Just found this video, and fixed my 2001 F150 SuperCrew's Odometer! Thanks for putting this together! It gave me the confidence to finally fix my truck! It's been cutting on and off for the past few years now, but finally stopped displaying all together. Now I can take it in tomorrow to get it inspected...they let me slide last year with a guess as to how many miles it had.

Mine blinked on and off every few miles or bumps in the road. Soldered connections as shown, odometer works fine now. Should have done this along time ago. Save yourself the time of removing the lower dash and just unplug the gear slector from cluster.... Nice vid thanks for the info.

Since mine works more often than it doesn't, your video convinced me to leave it alone. With all that plastic, I would end up breaking more than I fixed! Good video though. I figured something was poorly connected inside there. Ivan, on his Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics channel is always fixing bad solder joints, instead of buying expensive new parts for his customers. He likes to see why things failed. He took a transmission apart to show how some pins inside it were too small for the stress they were being subjected to. His favorite expression is, "No parts required."

That gear indicate removes from the cluster. Save yourself 20 mins of hassle. Good video and very helpful.

Dude, I just pulled in on the two black pegs on the ends of the shifter dial & it came right out of the console! I never took the whole cable out. Super easy, & I didn't break mine either.

Mine has been doing this for years annoying the crap out of me! I'm going to have to give this a try when I have some free time and the weather permits.

Your video was extremely helpful in preparing myself to remove the gauge cluster. I wanted to share something I discovered that eliminated a few steps. The gear selector is easily removable from the cluster so the bottom kick panel doesn't need to be removed. There is a tab on each side of the indicator when squeezed gently will completely disengage the part.

sure wish you lived by me to repair mine. I am a widow and Im able to do some things but Ive never soldered before so that part makes me nervous. Also remembering to connect all the plugs as I put it back together. Looks a little tricky but just mayb I can do it. This is a very informative video, I am tempted to try this myself, I cant imagine what the dealer will charge me to fix it or even try to sell me a whole new panel. Labor will be expensive for sure. Time to build up my confidence and GIT R DONE! Thank you for this fantastic video.

I repaired two of them by cleaning the connectors with CRC Electrical Cleaner. There was no need to solder. In a Silverado I had to also spread some of the prongs in the female because the connector was loose.

Well your video is awsome I took apart my dash and had my brother solder two of the things and so far I only went 1 mile but the odometer actually is working I am so happy I hope it stays working and don't shut off like it was doing drove me crazy but thanks to your video I did it all my self all but the soldering part but the shifter isn't exactly right where it should be but I was getting frustrated and got it as close where it should be as could thanks for video I was told it's not fixable and you are the man

As an avionics tech, I can say the finished soldering looks terrible! by not heating the joint before adding solder will only create MORE problems later. great video on removal and re-installation!

I just purchased a 2001 ford f150 supercrew 5.4l 4x4 and the speedometer Light kept going out, come back on, off, on, off, on... I followed your instructions, step by step from this video, I soldered those solder points on the back of the mother board and sure enough it fixed the speedometer Intermittent Light Out problem perfectly. (I took my time and kept re-viewing this vid so that I would Not miss a step). Thank You for an excellent instructional video Sir!!

Thank you, sir! I've had a non responsive odometer display for several years (like 8) on my 1999 Ford Mustang GT. Will be nice to get it fixed. Symptom was it would stay off like 95% of the time. On fresh start I might see it for 30 to 40 seconds. Then fade away. Could tap the plastic face or top of dash, but would flicker and fade out. Wow, good deal at Walmart!

On that shift selector, you can just release the whole display with two little push tabs and then pull the display and cable out together and let it hang.

Great video. The blinking odometer doesn’t bug me enough to go through the hassle though.

After soldering twice and the odometer not working....took a OHM meter to the connection and the solder part...and told me i had a good connections....also the gear shift indicator just has two push releases right where the indicator is...and dont have to remove the cable....

Great video, saved me a ton of time. Worked like a champ. Also remember that there are small rubber caps that connect to the guide pins on the top cover over the cluster. Found one on floor mat and then noticed where it came from.

My problem is that the selector wire is possibley broken or unhooked. from previous work behind the dash...Could have been the time we took it to The Dunes in Pismo California and kept up with my brothers Ford V10 Gas lifted monster..I think it was a F350..anyway..1 large impact on sand...Mabey broke then...But Being able to race my brother up the largest Dune..No issues and pulling out pultiple stuck vehicles that the tide was starting to overwelm..I Love My Truck!! 248,000 + miles and She will still show those new drivers what for!

You need to heat up the joint before applying the solder!!!!!! No need to put so much solder on either. Keep solder tip clean and tinned, use damp sponge to wipe solder tip on.

the extra step of removing the shift cable is not necessary, just remove the bezel that shows the gear position once the cluster is loose , it only snaps on and off from the sides ... I did it ,so I know it works...save easy an hour of on and off panels and cables .

Couple questions: Was it hard to remove the cluster while holding the camera? And also, should we try to avoid breaking the gear selector cable?

One suggestion -- disconnect the ground on your battery to prevent any shorts. I would also get a CHILTONs book ( it is a How To handbook ) so you can see what everything is. I have yet to try it yet, nervous about doing the soldering. How difficult is it to take out the clusters and can they get crossed accidentally putting back in ??

Mine went out I can’t see the amount of mileage I have now. So now need replace it or get working again.

My 2002 expedition odometer only lights up the trip miles which stay on 138 and the selector just goes back and forth between that and a little symbol on the far left. Could it be one of the wires?

That bolt that holds the gear shift cable is metric as well its I believe a 5.5

You made that a lot harder than it's needs to be. The transmission or gear selector can be unhooked by just 2 little clamps on each side of the selector. No need to go under the steering wheel. Look it up on KZfaq videos.

I did this on my 2001 F150 and it worked fine. This seems to be an issue with A LOT of the Ford Trucks. Ford should have done a recall. NOW, I'm having issues with the dash lights blinking on and off. Some of them stay off. It is NOT the bulbs, as I have replaced them numerous times. And those little bulbs are expensive. To me, it seems like probably a solder issue with the bulb sockets on the circuit board. Anybody else have this same problem???

Hey I followed your video step by step and my odometer is still not working including the gas gauge. Any advice would be appreciated

Now the odometer will last about a year and it'll start doing it again as the seasons change and make the solder joint expand and contract and when you go to turn on the headlights the blinkers will go solid and turn signals and headlights will short out oil light will come on when headlights are on and the gauges will start acting crazy
