Local shop refused to service mine so I Just performed this at @100,000 miles for first time on my 2015 Lincoln mkx.All the KZfaq videos had me paranoid.Put left front tire up on ramp,removed fill plug (no fluid came out)and used cheap 12v pump to suck out fluid.Was shocked I got that much out and how easy it was.Got almost exactly 12 ounces out and owners manual says it calls for 12 ounces.Just looked like normal dirty stinky gear oil.Filled by fishing hose down from engine to fill hole and had someone pour exact amount down hose while I made sure hose stayed in hole.No mess.

I think your idea is excellent. I noticed that when I bought a small pump for like 30 bucks on Amazon and used some plastic barbs to fit on some small 5/16'' hose to 1/2'' connection and first sucked with the 12 volt pump the old stuff out and then reversed with a new hose and pumped the new staff in and watched it change color to clear. I pumped till it started coming out, waited, then pumped some more until it started coming out again and then waited and so on until I pumped in about 2 quarts. Finally all clear on my 12 MKZ. Gonna drive for about 1000 miles then do it again. All done in the "fill plug". heh.😀

I added a 1/8" drain plug to the bottom of my Edge's pto and it was simple, it works beautifully, changes every 25000 miles, and takes about 45 minutes. I also added a heat shield between the catalytic converter just to shield heat from the pto.

I did the same and saved myself over $2,500 in repairs by preventing a catastrophic failure of the PTU due to FORD's faulty automotive engineering and design.

my PTU looks different - it has a drain plug but it doesn't open. The PTU is one of the stupidest designs ever. Put something that they call "lifetime" next to the cats and exhaust. What could possibly go wrong?

FYI, filling through the vent nipple up top, without removing the fill bolt, takes FOREVER. It's because the oil is hella thick and air has to escape. It took me roughly 18 hours to fill, without removing the fill plug and after drilling a drain hole. I love seeing the internals. Thanks, Pete.

Thanks for the vid. I have a 13 Lincoln MKX and changed the fluid out by the suction method. Vehicle had just over 60K miles on it. Fluid that came out wasn't too bad, but I'm glad I changed it for peace of mind. Looks like Ford/Lincoln changed the after 2017 and added a drain plug...at least on some models (MKX). I think adding a drain plug is the way I'll go for future fluid changes and save the cost of buying extra new fluid (and doing the flush method you mentioned).

I hope who ever though it was a good idea to not put a drain plug in it was fired and fell down a flight of stairs. I had a PTU eat its self because the case started leaking where it splits. my new one in my Escape has a drain plug so after having to replace it I change the oil every time I change the engine oil now its only .5 qt so not that bad.

Perhaps, one could put a bare copper wire (like 12 gauge from house wiring) into the tube (perhaps a foot of wire). Then you can bend the tube (and wire) to fit down into the unit at the correct spot. The wire wouldn't limit the flow through the tube by too much.

Ya that is a great suggestion to help position the tube to suck the oil out, I picked up a used escape with a ton of miles on it.. 235k. It runs surprisingly good. My mind is kinda blown.. But I know this damn thing has to be about to fail. I can't even imagine it is the original one in there. Probably been changed at least once if not twice by now. I'm probably going to try that wire trick. I was looking and I think it wouldn't be toooo bad to get at it from behind and slip the tube on down into the hold, but a wire to help guide it will probably do wonders.

This makes total sense. The problem is that any heavier shavings are still going to sink to the bottom and end up in the new oil also. At least with sucking it out, you may get some of the out.

This needs to be done every 30,000 miles or every 40,000 miles. My Ford shop refused to do it because they only want me to spend $1500 or more to replace the whole unit. I have 40,000 miles on my 2020 Ford escort the 2020 and up come with a drain plug and a fill plug so you don’t even have to worry about it, you just do the same as you would the rear differential

Likely picking up a used flex soon. Tons of stuff already changed on it including s rebuilt tranny, which is why I think it might be a good buy. However i dont see any records for PTU service so I'll probably do this soon. I wonder if the thin long handle tools used for serpentine belts would help with this job. We'll see!

PLEASE HELP! I’ve been having a problem with my 17’ Fusion AWD. Turning, have a bumping/clocking noise. Is this axle or PTU? I have 62,000 miles on the car now - never changed oil in PTU…
@joshuagomez3600
@joshuagomez3600 Жыл бұрын
It is hard to say for sure, but that does sound like symptoms of PTU. Although the half axels are much cheaper to replace. If you do it yourself it wouldn't be too bad. I'd suggest getting under there and taking a look at the boots on the half axles. If they are in good shape they are probably ok. Then it is likely the PTU. Also if your exhaust isn't upgraded the fill hole doesn't seem toooo bad to get to. To just try and figure out what is going on you could try and pull the fill plug and stick a finger in there to get some oil and see how it looks. If it is black and nasty its a pretty good guess the PTU is shot. If the oil seems clean and good then I'd look for other problems. From my research it seems like one of the most common issues is the fluid breaking down from heat and that just destroys the unit.
@franciscocarrera6188

I am curious why these PTU units take different amounts of oil?Yours takes 18 ounce,my 2015 MKX calls for 12 and looks like yours and I have seen as much as 23 on these Fords.I see lots of people on KZfaq filling these till the oil comes out of hole,which in my opinion is over filling.An interesting video idea if you still have that unit is try filling with 18 ounces and see where level is and maybe where 12 ounces is.Do not think either amount would be close to the fill hole.
@joshuagomez3600
@joshuagomez3600 Жыл бұрын
Well. "Over filling" is more of an issue on something if it doesn't have a way to vent. Since this PTU has a vent it isn't as big of a deal as there is a place for the air to go when the fluid heats up and expands. These just sit in such a hot area that they just get cooked and the fluid fails. I imagine it isn't as bad in colder places and if you don't idle as much and keep the air flowing but Idling in a hot climate would probably cook it really fast. I live in phx az and am terrified of this damn thing failing.

I believe mine is failing, 13 SHO that I just broke 90K on it. I believe I’m smelling a faint smell of “propane”. Apprehensive about trying this. Could I just add a little oil to it?
@Pete717
@Pete717 Жыл бұрын
from all I heard once you get that smell its over, you can try replacing oil and hope for best... Reason it smell is because your breathing hose came off because filter on the end got closed and its spilling oil on the hot transfer case. First, find breather hose, google search it or watch my videos, remove filter from it completely and reinsert hose back on the PTU, remove fill plug, try sucking oil out with pump and refill, you can repeat that few time to flash out all the bad settlement, if you can't remove old oil or not sure if all of that came out, keep adding new oil, drive around the block and fill again, let some spill out to it flashes bad stuff out. let me know how that works

I'm involved in a class action lawsuit with the NHTSA involving the poorly engineered electronic power steering fault assist. It's unlikely anything will come of it. FORD doesn't stand behind their vehicles or care about its consumers. If you don't believe me just call their customer service and support. You will not get any service or support from FORD unless you're willing to shell out some big money to fix their problem with your vehicle😢
