Ford Ranger `02 4x4 gear shifter hard to change gears replace trans range sensor

This Ford Ranger `02 four wheel drive shifter was hard to move through the gears, and was jumping out of park. And it wasnt able to select first gear because the T-30 torx screws holding the cable to the steering column we`re loose. The (TRS) or transmission range sensor was nearly frozen and needed to be replaced. Also the torx screws on shifter needed to be tightened.

What a great video. Followed this including making the bar and bolt and it worked perfect. follow the little points he makes, they are valuable. Mine was 04 4X4. The nut was 21mm not 22. The sensor was hard to get off because the shaft had actually rusted inside the nylon sleeve and swelled. The swelling was causing the stiffness. Penetrating oil slow and steady. This meant the old unit was destroyed getting it off because the nylon sleeve was frozen to the rust . Then chipped off the flaked rust, emery cloth to clean, grease and back on.

What is that part the shift cable is connected to on the trans

I have a 2000 ranger, and my t30 bolt broke on the inside. I tried getting it out but the screw is now lunged in, and me not having any tongs to get it out I was forced to cutting the wire and relying on my brakes and I couldn't drive over 55, and had to turn off the truck by turning the ignition and couldn't reverse. Is this a overall common problem with ford pick up trucks?

I have the same issue after changing engine where car won't go into drive or reverse. It actually gives the light for key/anti theft. What happened to you and what fixed it?

Nice video. Any idea what size that nut holding the shift arm is? Mine was welded to the arm with rust and I had to break it off. Can't find reference to it anywhere and my nut is pretty mangled after the nut breaker was done with it.

Not sure, but you may want to conatact; sonnax transmission, or transtar industries, for availability of the (manual control outer lever nut). Or visit a junkyard or trans rebuilder in you`re area.

Possible that the 2 torx headed screws on shift lever are loose at the end of steering column, where shifter cable attaches to the arm. Block wheels, look up at the end of steering column, above brake pedal. While working shifter handle up and down. If the metal arm is moving sideways some instead of up and down, there are 2 screws at the base of arm, that loosen up often. I lock-tight them, and re-install 1 at a time to repair.
