Couple of things from a ZR2 owner: The rock sliders are standard on the ZR2 Using it’s off-road mode provides more zip and might be similar to the rangers mud/ruts mode. Still, a decent review, better than some others who are completely ignorant of some of the facts.

Thank you for actually putting in a decent effort to test the off-road capabilities of this truck. I shake my head at some of the other videos.... We are going to switch now to 4wd and show you how off-road capable this truck is while we drive down this flat, dry, compacted dirt road that a Prius would have no issues with 😂😂😂.

As a ford guy I can't overlook the ZR2's front locker and the ZR2 having a regular v6 without any turbo headaches/maintenance. I can deal with less power or less mpg if I get reliability in return. There is not enough options to make the tremor a better deal than just getting a standard ranger and picking out your own wheel/tire combo.

Air Lockers and e-Lockers are great in some situations. However, not the best in all situations. Lot of information on the internet.....thread, comments...and KZfaq videos showing the other traction device alternatives.....1. Detroit TrueTrac and.... 2. Torsen. Many guys prefer one of the following three setups. 1. Detroit TrueTrac in both the front and rear differentials. 2. Detroit TrueTrac in the rear differential and a locker...usually the e-Locker in the front differential. 3. e-Locker in the rear differential and a Detroit TrueTrac or Torsen in the front differential. @@15Jeep I have had many vehicles with all of those combinations. A ranger with a rear torsen, a samurai I built with a spool in the rear and locker in the front, a f150 with limited slip in the rear, and my '19 f250 with the elocker in the rear. I feel the elocker is the best option and both front and rear would be ideal. The problem with the others is that here in the upper midwest with snow and ice the limited slip and other options (minus the air locker) will walk the rear end out on you when you try to pull out quick in traffic. Even in 4wd. I can't let my wife drive those vehicles because of that. I could handle it because I know what to expect. With the elocker (or air) then the vehicle will just spin a side and you will pull out slower but it will be more controlled for most people. That being said I wouldn't purchase a truck without a selectable locker in the rear and air lockers are prone to leaks and higher maintenance over an elocker. Selectable elocker both and front and rear would be my preference. You keep your turning radius when you need it and when you need the extra traction you can choose to enable both.

@@crazycomments8038 Turbos are notorious for issues in general. Plus all the vehicles power is dependent on the turbo, not a good look long term.

@@ballpython365 I had a 2002 Mazda Speed3 turbo going strong at 157,000 miles on it and not problem except the stupid bitch hit me because of texting. VW 2016 GTI tuned at 400 hp with 345 torque not one problem with the turbo. People who now turbos are not taken care of them and there are some will give out.

The two lockers and the mutimatic shocks make the whole difference here, I'm sure the zr2 will take to places where the tremor won't. (sorry about my english"", I'm from Chile)

It'll definitely be interesting to see how they do in the next part of this video. Yeah the front locker is an advantage, but the electronics in the Ford work pretty damn well so it'll be neat to see the comparison.

Are these vehicles same price range? Also I don't think front lockers are necessary for anything other than the most extreme/rare/intentionally difficult terrain circumstances. But if these vehicles are the same price range... why not get more bang for your buck.

@@ebs1234 yeah people over here in the US hate the fact there is no raptor ranger here. So far the tremor is the closest they have come. The F-150 raptor is awesome. But some people want something they can take on smaller trails. The F-150 is already wide but when you add the extra width of the raptor it gets some people that like trails not to buy it. The F-150 rapto has gotten dodge and Chevy guys to buy fords though. So add a badass raptor ranger to the line up plus the Broncos and ford is killing the off-road game.

Yea I did. But more than that the tremor package for the ranger is nothing more than the z71 off road package offers for the Colorado. The towing capability they mention for the ranger is wrong, it’s for the 4x2 version, and the Colorado with the 2.4L has the best towing capacity of any midsize truck. The entire comparison would be better with a Z71 Colorado Vs The Ranger with the tremor package. The Zr2 would be better compared to the Ranger Raptor which for some reason Ford still hasn’t given us.

The ZR2 needs a leveling kit, slightly bigger tires, and a shock relocation kit. With those modifications, it would be the cream de la cream of midsized trucks IMO.

I think I would pick the Ranger, but that is just a preference thing. Both truck are very capable, clearly. I think for me, the Ranger wins out in the technology dept. Those different terrain modes and the off-road cruise control looked like they work really well. One thing I would also point out on how the Tremor option Ranger differs from the standard one; the truck is a few millimeters wider to accommodate the larger tires, etc. Apparently the rear leaf spring setup is also completely different on it, versus the standard Ranger layout. GM's in house designed shocks on the ZR2 are really impressive. Cool to see what a difference they were over the setup on the Ford. Great job guys! 😀

We own an Explorer and I assure you the terrain management select mode works great! Ford's system works very well when used CORRECTLY. Also, fords hill decent...AKA off-road four-wheel-drive cruise control is amazing. Although I enjoy these guys often they have no idea how some features work on the trucks and that affects the test outcome at times

This really comes down to your preference. I’d pick the ranger because of mpg and towing but then again I don’t remember the last time I towed anything over 3000lb.

If your trying to tow you wouldn't really get an offroad spec truck. Ranger lariat maxed at 3600 colorado gasser at 7000 and colorado diesel at 7600 respectively

Yeah, but a base model 4x4 Tacoma would shit all over these trucks. Shit, even their pre runner version, would. Lol. Toyota has worlds best and most advanced 4x4 system, and it shows when brands like Chevy, Ford and Dodge try to even compare lol

Nice test. Just a little note, chevy doesnt recommend awd mode off road because it can damage the system.

@@tommye9057 I've had it since November and am still averaging 30mpg on my 500 mile (highway) round trip. And the engine oil is so much cleaner. It still turn dark, but not that super black color.

In my opinion, front and rear lockers will make any truck a better option when it comes to slippery and muddy driving conditions.

Small trucks prices are too much for me, but Colorado was specifically designed for off road, its better looking, and the 4 door has surprisingly good room in back seats. This was only truck to do the Vegas run across desert stock for testing.

The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is ugly.....looks like it belongs in a Star Wars movie. Aside from the awful, dreadful, nauseous and Transformer front looks.....the ZR2 is really the only somewhat off-road capable 4WD vehicle produced by General Motors. Both the Chevrolet Trail Boss and the GMC AT4 are pathetic examples of a "factory off-road" type 4WD vehicle and fall very short compared to Class 1 and Class 2 4WD trucks available from Ford and Dodge.

Colorado was designed to sell, like all of them. Ranger has more room in the rear. Guess you have never looked at any Ranger torture testing I guess, its only truck to get to hell and back lol.

I think this is one of those decisions where you can't go wrong, I think the ZR2 is cooler looking and I'm just gonna flat out admit that it's superficial but it matters a lot to me, I won't ever push either of these trucks to the limit of their offorad capabilities so the ZR2 is where I'm leaning

Great video. The ZR2 with the DSSV shocks is hands down a better ride on road or offroad. We took our ZR2 on Hell's Revenge in Moab, Utah. Diesel handled it like a champ. Dont forget you have an "off road mode" on the ZR2 as well like the mud and rut for the Ford.

As a 58 year old I do. But at 6’-2” it’s a bit high, meaning at my height it’s a bit hard once I step on it to get in the cab as I have to crouch to avoid wacking my head going in.

It’s crazy that Ford’s add on package is practically equal to a purpose built off-roader. I would, however, like to see a comparison with another purpose built off-roader in Australia’s Ranger Raptor or the Euromarket Wolftrak.

They didn't forget anything there fanboy. They treated both trucks the same, started in 2wd and escalated from there. Ranger is just better lol.

@@adamharris2674 My point was they never put the ZR2 in off-road mode. Yet put the Ranger in mud Terrain mode. The shift points would’ve been different on the ZR2

I basically have a duplicated of the ZR2 they are driving just without the lights and with a diesel. The shock bump was taken care of with a 4" lift kit. Rain, snow, Mud. I haven't had it bog down once while in 4 wheel.

The take away really nailed which truck to get. If you live close to the sierras like me where there are equal parts washboard roads to off road trails, definitely the zr2 because of the multimatic for high speed and front diff locker for off road terrain like we have here. Anywhere else where you’re just doing some forest roads with occasional deep puddles, definitely the ranger tremor.

The Tremor package is nice, but the dated cabin, and especially the lack of an automatic AWD setting gives the nod to the ZR2 as the more practical of the two for Canada.

Some of the best and most durable engines ever built were the Chrysler 240 ci Slant Six; the Ford 300 ci Inline Six; and the Jeep / AMC 4.0L Inline Six. So.....the inline 6 cylinder engines have a history of reliability and durability. Be interesting to see if the Ford 2.3L Inline 4 cylinder proves to have a similar reliability and durability record. Forced Induction Systems...turbos and superchargers...usually are a maintenance and repair issue. The only nods going the in the direction of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is naturally aspirated V6 engine and the seemingly better quality shocks...providing a better ride off-road...and no doubt on paved roads. The Ford Ranger Tremor offers better clearance, better approach angle, better departure angle, and a better breakover angle. Surprised at the lackluster performance of the Fox 2.0 shocks. Install a few quality aftermarket parts...a slight lift...some better quality aftermarket shocks...King, Fox, Icon....and some bigger and more aggressive tires...Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac or B.F. Goodrich KM2 or KM3 and the Ranger Tremor will be way more capable off-road than the Colorado ZR2.

I think it was worth spending 10 seconds covering the Tremors upgraded suspension bits over the standard/FX4 Ranger variants. The FX4 shocks are terrible on and off road. The upgraded leaf pack (no longer a mono-leaf) on the Tremor is nice as well.

I would say that the stiffer ride on the Tremor is because it can carry more weight/payload? As usual Chevy is style over substance.
