I've owned my Raptor for about 5 years. It's an amazing truck and it really lives up to its reputation as a capable all-round off-road vehicle. I just picked up a new 2022 Power Wagon. Whenever I get a new off road vehicle I test it out to see what it's capable of, and where the weak points (read potential upgrades) are. In this video I'll show you how the Power Wagons stacks up against the Raptor as I try it out off road for the first time.

The difference between these trucks is that a power wagon would be leaning towards a working individual using that truck for those needs, firewood, rough roads, etc. Raptor is for a dude named Thad to pick up his kids every other weekend from their moms house.

for real. Powerwagon would be a boss for legit trails slow to moderate speed and much better at slow crawling... specially with the solid front axle. Hell it probably would have outdone the raptor int he ditch test if the swaybar was disconnected.

I keep seeing this test over and over and I don’t know why. I don’t judge people for their videos. I can’t wrap my head around this comparison. I guess it’s just a PW owner tick we have. All owners truly know why they have a wagon, pros and cons.

@@Ls-gz2uc For me, it's because I love my Raptor, but it's got to go and so I have the PW. When I buy a new vehicle I like to find out what it's capable of, so that I can drive it appropriately. In this case, it's not as capable as I'd like to it be, or as the Raptor was, so I need to be mindful of that....

It might be useful to know the raptor is a 1/2 ton truck and the power wagon is a 3/4 ton truck. The wagon is nearly 2,000 lbs heavier, has solid front suspension and capable of locking all 4 tires together directly for maximum traction, oh and it also has a wench, and despite its greater capabilities, it’s sexier interior, it’s also a bit less expensive. So eat your heart out Raptor.
@goofingoffroad
@goofingoffroad Жыл бұрын
The weight difference makes a big difference for sure. The Raptor does have a torsion locking diff at the front, so the front wheels do lock when they lose traction. I love the torsion locking diffs and had them on my old Bronco. The locking diffs in the PW are great, but sometimes take a bit of work to engage.

I agree with you - they are different trucks. In my opinion *any* off-road truck should drive along a washboard road with control, which the Power Wagon does not. Also, when you get a new truck it's important to understand what it is (or is not) capable of. In this case, its nowhere near as capable as the Raptor - even with the "rock crawling" tests like the ramp test and the ditch test. So, as a "rock crawler" it definitely has its limitations, and now I have identified them I can try to address them.

Better get yourself a TRX to compete with your Raptor. Many people think that going right to 37s on a PW is the thing to do but I feel there are too many trade offs so I prefer going to 35 inch tires on my PW. Good review.
@goofingoffroad
@goofingoffroad Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the compliment! The TRX is impressive, but I think the Raptor is still the benchmark. The low MPG and small tank on the TRX don't really make it the long-distance desert explorer that the Raptor is. I know the Power Wagon doesn't compare and that's ok - I'm going to use it for what it was made for. Stay tuned...

Are you sure you had the sway bar disconnected on the ditch test? The PW will absolutely out flex the Raptor. The Raptor is made for bombing (which it is awesome at) while the PW is for crawling. I see lots of people going with Carli suspension to fix the fast washboard road situation, which is great, but people rarely address the low front bumper on the PW. I put on the Chassis Unlimited front bumper, which I would recommend. It would have allowed you to get up the ramp test unobstructed.

@marvinheadrick3511 The sway bar will reconnect at about 20 mph if I remember correctly. The problem with the Power Wagon is the heavy sprung springs even though it's softer compared to normal 2500.

Dip test you didn't disconnect the front sway bar. If you would have done that Powerwagon wouldn't have come off the ground. The washboard test you drove the Powerwagon at 40mph and the raptor at only 30. But with the suspension in the raptor it should be softer. But the real test is the narrow stance on the trails, electric locking differentials and the front winch standard equipment on the Powerwagon.
@goofingoffroad
@goofingoffroad Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you noticed the speed difference on the washboard test. Good catch! You know how, when you're driving along a washboard road, you tend to reach a "comfortable" speed, and sometimes the faster you go the smoother it gets?. The raptor got there at 30mph. I was still trying to find that "comfortable" speed at 40mph in the PW, when it started to hop around at the back end, so I stayed at that speed. 30mph in PW was even worse. The Raptor is certainly wide for narrow trails. The PW is longer, so it makes navigating narrow trails quite challenging - both trucks have their compromises.

@johnmorales9584

The powerwagon has a better RTI score than the ford. Articulation is better on the wagon. Plus, independent front suspension is not as good as solid axle for serious offroading. It didn't look as you were measuring front and rear articulation, just the rear. Also, your comparing the two trucks on the ford's terms where Baja was what it was designed for. Try comparing in rock crawling as well as other situations where it does not cater to the strengths of one. Saying the wagon is not as good on high speed whoops then declaring the ford a better offroader seems strange to me. I could just as easily say, the wagon tows more, therefore it's a better truck. Considering the price difference between the two, I would buy the wagon, put on a Carli suspension, still save about 10k dollars and have a better Baja and rock crawler in the end.
@goofingoffroad
@goofingoffroad Жыл бұрын
They are definitely two different trucks built for two different purposes. RTI doesn't always equal real-world performance. For example, the PW's front bumper is a major inhibitor of approach angle and the Raptor's larger tires IFS mean better ground clearance at the front. I've rock-crawled the Raptor and it can be hairy for sure - but the point is to look at the trucks "from the factory". Spoiler alert - we can explore the PW with the Carli suspension and see what that's like - watch this space...
@johnmorales9584
@johnmorales9584 Жыл бұрын
@@goofingoffroad RTI specifically measures articulation, I'm not refering to approach/departure angles and their effects on real world performance. It is also worth mentioning that a simple swap of tires to 35 would even out those approach/departure numbers without needing any modifications on the wagon to do so. I would agree that 35 tires are not stock, but the truck itself is still stock and would be a better way to compare the trucks on even footing. Of course, I am looking forward to your Carli suspension videos on the wagon.

The Power Wagon, historically and currently, is an off road work horse. The Raptor is an off road toy you can also do light duty truck stuff with. The Power Wagon is a medium duty work truck you can also take off road or on poorly maintained service/fire roads either for work or play. Power Wagon owner here. Fun channel, though.

@@goofingoffroad I think it's a jack of all trades and master of...some. I don't tow, so I don't mind the reduced capacity due to the suspension mods. I've had 24 bags of conrete in the back, no problem. I've had it loaded with freshly cut maple (so wet) and no problem, and I won't likely need more payload. I've driven it 20 hours straight on the highway with no discomfort issues (thank God for podcasts or boredom may have got me) so it's a great highway cruiser. I've not done any real technical offroading, but have done things like Black Gap and Old Ore Road at Big Bend Nat'l Park, so it does the sort of fire roads and unmaintained trails I'm interested in. So, all in all, a very comfortable truck for work and play. Completely stock 75th anniversary package, except White Knuckle sliders and a Carli front diff guard as additions.

Glad I didn't waste the entire 4+ minutes watching this biased unrealistic comparison, 2 completely different trucks. Never tried to or mentioned using the disconnecting sway bar. Also could see that the Raptor tires were aired down. was that also done with the Power Wagon, or was the stock tire pressure maintained, which at 60/65psi is gonna make any ride more stiff in any condition.
@goofingoffroad
@goofingoffroad 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment! To answer your questions - if you *had* watched the whole video you would have seen that even with the sway bar disconnected on the PW, the Raptor had better travel. On the washboard road both trucks were driving at stock pressure. That was the whole point of the test. Are everyday drivers going to air down every time they drive a dirt road? Probably not - so thepont was to see how they were driving straight off the pavement.
