Good on ya Glen, thanks for that. I have a heap of videos currently being stuck together including a part two of dialing in the back end. I had to build a model leaf spring and experiment with flipping different length leaves to work out what was going on. This trick sticks the back down but makes it really firm if you go too long on the back part of the spring. If you enjoyed this one I reckon you'll be interested in what's coming.

I've read on a forum that a trick people do for demolition derby cars is put clamps on each leaf spring on either side of the wheel to stiffen it up.. I got a single clamp on the rear of mine to stop the leafs slapping after been reset. I didn't put a clamp on the front part. If you get your hot helper to do some more bouncing lol you will see they move/rub against each other.
@FairlyLegalCarMods

Good onya Brendon. Yep, the clamps are a good trick to beef up the pack. I spent 5 minutes on the whiteboard going through all the live axle tricks under the sun but my "helper" thought it was boring and it didn't make the cut. Lol Playing now with different preload on each leaf to try and stop it always stepping to the left.

I've recently gotten a set of FG XT 1 tonner leafs and added an addition main leaf + reset the whole pack 90mm lower and I cant fault it! (1 tonner leafs have a thicker rebound spring, and solid perch instead of the rubber perch). This setup feels *so* much more planted under acceleration(stock shocks are still too soft but I will get some Konis and also stiffen up the front end). I have no axle tramp now even if I bog spinning from 1st-2nd, or not launching hard enough in 1st I can send you a photo of the packs side by side if you like

Must say great work mate looking at doing this to my fg ute. Have a few questions if you don’t mind,what rubber bushing did you use and how did you get the spring noise to quiten down.
@FairlyLegalCarMods
@FairlyLegalCarMods 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Shane. The rubber bushings in the shackle and at the front of the leaf were fine so I left them alone. The rubber pads in the centre were flogged out so I used Nolathane ones. When the knocking was happening I used a leaf on the top with a little more bend in it so it would always keep in contact with the rest of the pack when compressed. If you give it a crack just check your pinion angle afterwards as this one tilted the diff back slightly. Good luck and thanks for the comment.👍

Flipping leaf springs is what you have done.. removing the lowering blocks will help with the comfort of the ride.. also good lowered shocks to suit the vehicle are gonna help to stop stock shocks botteming out
@FairlyLegalCarMods
@FairlyLegalCarMods 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andrew. Yep adding an additional leaf flipped is what we tried here. Not too sure about the blocks affecting comfort as it’s still kept off the stops but I agree they have an affect on ride.(increase anti-squat and multiplying lateral and reciprocal forces.) Definitely agree that the valving in the standard rear shocks being way too light and closing it up would be the obvious fix for the rebound issue. Thought it might be interesting to tackle it from a slightly different angle from the history books.👍
@bengibson3955
@bengibson3955 2 жыл бұрын
Great work! I enjoy your factual approach, particularly adopting motorcycle methods of measuring and adjusting. I’ve got an AU V8 manual ute was lowered by the original owner by Heasmans in Tempe/Sydenham or wherever they were back in 2001. The lowering job was done before my dad bought the ute with only 21,000km on it. It’s been my ute and bit of a beater for a few years now, and I’m realising after years of track sprinting various Subarus and getting into some reasonable FPVs and performance fords, that the suspension package Heasmans stuck under the ute works beautifully. It’s quite low, has at least 1 reversed leaf on the rear and I think the front/rear springs are Kings with Bilstein dampers. I’ve had a pretty negative view on the Kings Springs and it’s only now I’m expecting more of a couple of Falcons that I’m recognising the value of the kit that’s been fitted to my dad’s ute since 1999! I’ll be having a good clean-up under there next chance I get, to see exactly what’s under there.

is the friction from the top spring going to cause an issue over time on the second spring will the shackles be over strained? Do you carry any weight in the back I use my ute for moving heavy loads at times
@FairlyLegalCarMods
@FairlyLegalCarMods 2 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, I inspect the contact point regularly and it doesn’t look like it moves at all, most of the travel must happen behind where they touch. If you used a long leaf this might be different. They’re shouldn’t be any extra load on the shackles as the spring is still neutral when clamped together and bolted to the diff housing. I put bikes and gear in the back usually up to 250kg. It will make the spring feel stiffer but lowers the ride height a fair bit. I have experimented a lot with leaf springs now including making model springs to bench test. This mod takes a lot of bounce out of the pack. Essentially the more pressure you clamp on the top the less it reacts like a spring and more like a flat bar.

@FairlyLegalCarMods
@FairlyLegalCarMods 3 жыл бұрын
It's definitely worth a shot mate. Generally cal tracks or slapper bars are the go to to help with launching on leaf springs but anything beefing up the front of the leaf will help. This will make the back pretty solid and less bouncy. The longer the upside down leaf is behind the axle the firmer and lower the back will be. I haven't had any tramp at all. A barra xg sounds pretty sweet!

Hi Graeme and thanks for the suggestion. I reckon they would be another step in the right direction however tramp/ traction bars and products like caltracs or the malwood kit are generally designed to prevent spring wrap and axle hop by holding everything in line. I don’t think they would affect spring rebound much as that is generally controlled by the shocks. I’m definitely keen to make something similar up in the near future though!
