Build date is also on driver door tag opening . My build date is 6-20 Kentucky plant that labor time is not even enough to do a good job on this involved a project. Dealership mechanic for 12 years heavy equipment mechanic 31 years . They should just install new trans and send the one out of the truck back to factory to be rebuilt!!!

As both a mechanic at a dealership and a transmission builder all I can say is wow! 10 hours labor to do this job is a joke I doubt a single stator support or valve body bolt will get torqued or a single thing cleaned. Also if something is generating metal like a planet carrier the entire transmission must me torn down and properly cleaned and reassembled which takes more than 10 hours to do properly and no dealership I’ve ever seen has the proper equipment to do automatic transmissions efficiently making the mechanic cut corners to even get close to what he’s getting paid in hours

Any 2020+ Ford Super Duty owners with the 10R140 that received the Customer Satisfaction Program (CSP) Notice 21B03, for repair - replace the bearing in the Number One Planetary Ring Gear Assembly, might want to consider paying the Ford dealer and or technician extra money to install performance upgrades. The Ford 10R140 and GM 10L1000 were built on a joint venture project by both Ford and GM engineers, with Ford leading the project. Both of these transmissions have a robust structure, but both have several weak internal parts. The GM 10L1000 was not designed and engineered by Allison. Inside information indicates one of the top Allison engineers made a couple of tweaks in order for GM to pay big dollars and use the Allison name. There are two different 10R140 and GM 10L1000 versions for the gas and diesel engines. Problems reported with both versions. The main identified PROBLEM with these transmissions is "cross leaking" in the Valve Body and the "E Clutch Assembly". One company has a fix for these problems along with offering many other performance upgrades in parts like the torque converter cover, triple disk lockup mechanism, CNC machined billet stator, custom clutch stackup, increased clutch surface areas, etc. A rebuilt valve body will cost around $1,000.00 while full rebuilds with several quality internal parts for 10R140 and 10L1000 transmissions will be around $9,000.00.

I think you're worrying unnecessarily I was a Ford tech for close to 20 years with automatic transmissions as a specialty Ford will not allow any Tech to make a warranty repair unless he is certified for working on the transmission in this recall furthermore if an uncertified Tech works on any recall Ford will not pay the dealership for the repair I am retired now but from the looks of the recall that you are showing not all transmissions will experience a complete failure of the bearing these are straightforward procedures to take care of a known concern part Ford is making every effort to make sure this concern is addressed promptly over my career I've seen this many times Ford goes out of their way to take care of their customers quickly due to dealership size workload and scheduling most customers will probably get their truck back within 3 or 4 days in most cases Ford does not issue a recall unless they already have Parts ready to service a minimum expected number of vehicles this is not the end of the world for your new truck it's just inconvenient I'm quite sure your truck will be repaired without any major problem I hope you get many years of good service out of the vehicle

Exactly! Furthermore this is minor compared to past GM and Chrysler transmission failures. The problem with the "single faulty part" inside the Ford 10R140 and 10R140G transmissions is minor compared to the "design defect" of the entire 8 speed transmissions built by General Motors...affecting a long list of models from 2015 through 2019. Numerous class-action suits have been filed against GM over its 8L45E and 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission. Plaintiffs claim the eight-speed automatic transmission will slip gears, shift into gear aggressively and also cause the vehicle to shudder or jerk. Talk about a "piece of junk". This may well in fact be the biggest blunder of an automatic transmission in automotive history.

@@stephenvalastro5678 Ford (For) the most part, I do like the General Motors V8 gas engines and usually the automatic transmissions bolted up behind those engines. However, I cannot stand.....actually detest and loathe the Chevrolet 4WD and GMC 4WD trucks! I completely agree.....Ford...the Navistar built 6.0L and 6.4L diesel engines...had numerous problems off the assembly line. The 6.0L had failures and problems with the "Surrounding Operating Systems".....cheap, weak design...the FICM, water pump (cast aluminum housing, plastic impeller), engine oil cooling system (oil to coolant to get cooled), MotorCraft Premium Gold Coolant with silicates (formed goo, muck and sludge that clogged the engine oil cooler), poorly designed EGR cooler, inadequate oil filtration (oil filter too small). Bullet Proof Diesel resolved all of these problems with quality aftermarket parts. Example: CNC machined aluminum billet water pump...both the housing and the impeller. I just sold a very nice F350 Crew Cab 6.0L 4WD truck in January. Many people driving these trucks trouble free. Granted, lot of money to get them reliable and durable. The 6.4L suffers from problems with the twin turbos and more importantly, block cavitation behind the water pump. No fix for that. You mentioned 6.2L. I never heard of a 6.2L diesel in a Ford truck.

@@stephenvalastro5678 Why do I detest and loathe the Chevrolet 4WD and GMC 4WD trucks? GM 4WD trucks are PATHETIC off-road, on uneven terrain, especially in mud and snow. GM engineers do not have a clue on how to build a good 4WD truck. The entire truck should be re-engineered. What's wrong with Chevrolet 4WD and GMC 4WD trucks? Check Out the following List -----------> 1. IFS Axle - Poor Axle Articulation compared to the Solid Front Axle 2. Poor Approach Angle - truck is unable to ascend a steep hill 3. Poor Departure Angle - truck is unable to descend a steep hill 4. Poor Breakover Angle - result of Little Itty Bitty tries AND Low Hanging Frame Rails...truck ends up as a "Teeter Totter" on small knolls or mounds of dirt on uneven terrain off-road. 5. Square / Rectangle Wheel Wells - round tire in a square / rectangle opening - the proverbial "round peg in a square hole". GM engineers are stupid! 6. Too Much Lift required for Larger Tires.....4 inch lift required for 35 inch tires and 6 inch lift required for 37 inch tires...messes up the "Center of Gravity" (related to Number 5). Chevrolet 4WD and GMC 4WD are both "Street Queens".....only good for driving on paved roads.....maybe snow packed paved roads to the grocery store and to home improvement stores to pick up a few supplies. Both trucks are pathetic off-road. The Chevrolet 4WD Trail Boss has itty bitty tires. The GMC 4WD AT4 is a joke...and butt ugly to boot. Looks like it belongs in a Star Wars movie. Regarding 4WD trucks........GM = Gargantuan Mistake!!!

Hopefully, this problem will be isolated to the 2020 Super Duty trucks. Two other possibilities. 1. The aftermarket will design a solution. 2. The 6R140 will bolt up to the 7.3L gas engine.

I just don't trust dealership techs to get this job done correctly. I suspect a high percentage of these repairs are going to bounce back. It would be cheaper for Ford to simply replace the transmission and ship the pulled units back to the transmission manufacturing facility for a rebuild in controlled circumstances.

I am a retired mechanic and Toyota is rock solid. I wish they made a HD truck to compete with the big 3. I had an 07 Tacoma and it was great but it simply lacked payload capacity. I need a 1 ton truck with a 3000 + payload and 15k towing capacity. I now have a GM 3500HD Diesel. I had high hopes for the new Tundra but it in the 1/2 ton segment and that is just too light duty.

If auto companies would offer manual transmissions instead of these various, complicated automatics this bullshit would not be happening. Why do most cars and trucks in Europe have manual transmissions? Are we in the US too lazy to learn and use a manual?
@AnyManProjects

I get it man... but here's the truth. Modern automatic transmissions can handle the immense torque and towing numbers new trucks are putting out. Manuals for the most part cannot. Even if they could, the demand is so low for them that there would be no reason to engineer them (cost wise).

If the dealer puts you on the list before the cut off date you will be fine. Also, all dealerships are not owned by ford but the one I used to work for, something major like this they put a 'team' on this and they do the repairs exclusively(one to remove and reinstall the trans and 1 to just do the internal work). This allows them to become very efficient while reducing the risk of human error. I'm sure you have to be Ford automatic certified to even be allowed to work on the inside of these transmission and then be reimbursed by Ford.

The good thing is that Ford is admitting it has a problem and attempting to fix it. That is something that GM doesn't do. I know friends who had steering problems with GM X-cars in cold weather caused by aluminum rack and pinion housing and the dealer would replace the housing with another one exactly like it. Same problem again. This went on from approximately 1981 through 1988 with no actual fix by GM. NAPA took the housings, bored them out, inserted a steel sleeve and reassembled. Problem fixed. As far as I was concerned GM allowed a safety design problem (steering locked up at cold temperatures) to continue to be built for almost a decade. At least Ford admits when it has a problem and tries to get it fixed.

Exactly Correct!!!

Much easier and virtually ALWAYS possible to address weak components, parts, etc on a truck....but IMPOSSIBLE to change the entire truck and fix the bad and inferior design. The General Motors 4WD trucks are PATHETIC off-road, especially on uneven terrain in mud and snow. Why? Following is a list of reasons ----------------------> a. Poor Breakover Angle - low hanging frame rails....the truck can become a "Teeter Totter" on uneven terrain...a knoll...small, low, natural hill e. Many years ago ALLISON transmission who builds HD auto trans for Buses, garbage trucks & simi's built a auto trans which too had a early bearing fail. As it turned out, to get to the bearing, the trans had to be removed & totally disassembled. The repair exceeded the cost of a new trans, but, ALISON had no choice but to correct the flaw. What was done was, when a customer delivered his vehicle to the dealership, his defective trans was replaced with a completely new unit. THEN, Allison simply tossed the defective trans in the ash can. The cost to Alison was ENORMOUS. !

Ford would be better off replacing complete transmission with a new and/or rebuilt one which is on hand. Take a transmission out and send it off to their rebuild shop and replace it with a newly rebuilt one that the dealership orders prior to the truck coming in. How else will there be any consistency in repair if each dealership fixes their own problems. Although there are detailed repair instructions, each tech has his own skill set and dedication to their job. I know my idea will never happen but it’s better than dropping your truck off at the dealer and hoping for the best ! I’ve had major issues with each of my four Ford trucks which forced my decision to trade it in for a new one way before I was ready for a new purchase - 2010 F150 (5.4) broken spark plugs in rear cylinder, 2013 F150 (3.5EB) turbo failure, 2018 F150 (5.0 Coyote) oil burn, and cam phaser rattle & transmission issue- all unresolved and now 2020 F250 (6.7) transmission. I’ve pretty much had it with Ford. It’s almost like an Apple Iphone, the more improvements they make the worse their products get and you are forced to buy new. Very hard to be brand loyal anymore. My last oil change at the dealership, the tech left his oil filter wrench attached to the new oil filter. I went under the truck to make sure they changed the filter and see the oil filter wrench wedged on the new filter. My buddy got his oil changed on an F150 coyote and they forgot to replace the oil fill cap, 10 miles later and oil everywhere and cap was sitting, wedged in a space near the radiator. I know hopefully these will not be the techs that tear down a transmission but it says something about Ford and their attention to detail. Not every dealer has an ARod !! Unfortunately

I would then sell the original...now repaired transmission on eBay. I've heard about several dealers using high school boys to change oil in vehicles.

Recalls will have a S,E,C suffix in them. With this being a B customer satisfaction program it means it's a proactive repair. It means they found a defect and they're going to repair the vehicle if you bring it in before the end of the program.

'B' Programs (Proactive Repairs - e.g. 15B13, 15B22) These programs request customers to return their vehicle without delay to receive a repair or update. In addition, dealers must repair new vehicles in stock prior to delivery. Vehicles affected by “B” programs are identified in OASIS until the program expires or until a claim is submitted for payment against the program number - do not code the claim as warranty. If you do not submit the claim against the program number, the vehicle will not be removed from OASIS until after the program has expired. In cases where the customer previously paid to have the repair performed, the customer may be eligible for both a refund and a repair as defined by the bulletin.

A Recall is conducted to remedy a safety, compliance or emissions concern. When the Company notifies you of a recall for inspection and repair, the appropriate correction must be performed promptly to vehicles in dealer stock and to vehicles presented by customers for recall service. NOTE: Federal law requires dealers to complete any outstanding safety, compliance and emissions recalls beforebefore a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee. Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $21,000 per vehicle as well as exposure to other legal liabilities. Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory prior to delivery. There are three different types of recalls that may appear on OASIS. The type can be easily determined by looking at the letter in the recall number: XE "Recall - Types" • "S' - Safety Recall (e.g. 14S04, 14S08) • 'E' - Emissions Recall (e.g. 14E01) • 'C' - Compliance Programs are issued to address a regulatory compliance issue (e.g. 14C03, 14C04). Recalls remain open until repairs are completed and the claim is paid. Vehicles are identified in OASIS until a claim is reimbursed against the recall number - do not code the claim as a warranty repair. If you do not submit the claim against the recall number using a recall type claim and entering the FSA # in the Sub-code field, the vehicle will not be removed from OASIS and the customer may continue to receive recall reminder letters. If a customer paid to have the repair performed before the recall announcement or paid for emergency repairs away from the servicing dealers after the recall announcement, the customer may be eligible for both a refund and a repair based on the specific bulletin guidelines. Refer to “ Customer/Dealer Refunds for Recalls” for additional information regarding Recall refunds.

If I were you, I would demand a brand new torque converter, fluid, filter and tranny cooler. You bought a brand new truck and only brand new parts (not reconditioned) should be used for repair. They can flush the lines, but they can never remove all of the debris from the torque converter and cooler. Thats why new or rebiult torque converter warranties require you to replace the tranny cooler also or the converter warranty is voided.

I'd be waiting until the dealer techs get some practice. I might even talk to a fleet that uses these trucks and see what tech at what dealer they allow to do their transmission repairs. Its not the shop that does good or bad work but the tech doing the work. I'm in the twin cities and there is one guy that did the Ford police car transmission work in the area. The city I worked with had every new Crown VIC trans reworked by the same guy. Transmission repair is an art and very few people are good enough to be a true artist.

I see where it was mentioned to put petroleum jelly on one of the seals. If that seal is rubber petroleum jelly will degrade the integrity of that seal. If they suggest the use of petroleum jelly to act as a lubricant for the seal during the reassembly process there are other more viable products such as O-ring compound which will not degrade the seal or contaminate the fluid if it should find its way there, this is what we used on all seals and O-rings in the assembly plant I worked in for 17 years.

O-ring silicone lubricant w/probably work. It's also widely available.
@rsmith2786
@rsmith2786 3 жыл бұрын
It depends what elastomer the o-ring is made from. Since these are in a transmission and in constant contact with petroleum-based transmission fluid, I can't think it is going to be an issue.

Here are what worries me about this recall: 1. The tech doing the job. Are they competent? Do they care at all if they do a good job or not? How much dirt will be on the parts while they are putting it back together? Do they even tighten the bolts to spec? I know a lot of good mechanics but more bad ones. Some people count down the minutes to the end of shift and could give a crap what something looks like when it goes out the door. 2. There seems to be an awful lot of parts that are labelled as "replace as needed" and not included in the recall parts list. What happens when the transmission gets torn apart and they realize they need more parts? Chances are they wont be in stock so it will have to sit and wait until they come in. They are not going to tie up a lift and a service bay while its waiting so more than likely the truck will be pushed outside with a bit of plastic put over the open holes under the truck where it will sit in the weather waiting for the parts to come in. At the same time, the disassembled transmission will be pushed into a corner until it can go back in. This is a recipe for disaster and it happens quite a bit. 3. What happens if you get your truck back and the transmission does not shift properly? This seems like it would be a nightmare scenario with trips back and forth to the dealer trying to get something sorted out because the transmission was not reassembled properly. I hate it when anyone else works on my stuff, especially when I dont know who it is. I'm not saying that everyone is going to have problems after they get their truck back but it just breeds nightmare scenarios in my mind lol.

The smart thing for Ford to do is simply swap out the transmission and send the cores to reman facility with proper policies and procedures for quality. Otherwise, the resell value on these units just dropped by the amount of a new transmission.

I agree with what you say. I think some dealers will do an excelent job and others not so much. I mean, crap, I took my older f150 to the dealer here in cali for a simple front brake job and they gave it back to me with air in the system so I ended up bleeding the brakes myself. I can't Imagine having the trans torn all apart.

Thus is the case, it is prevelant in many makes, I too hate to have strange hands on my rig. I have 30,000 bench hours working for harley-d, you have the same problem with compenticy of workforce, in many cases the motor company wants the bad item back so they can do an autopsy themselfs and in general they are dedicated to product improvement. It all starts in the field, knowledgable techs give the motor company "heads up" on what they are seeing, so trending issues can be tracked, evaluated, and resolved. I loved that part of my job, and took it serious, knowing that I AM part of the solution. These young techs won't bust their ass at works like us old guys used too, not much interest in anything other than a paycheck for them.

Unfortunately a lot of techs work on flat rate and the cleaning and replacing of a whole lot of claimed parts will not happen.Most just want to get it out the door and move on to the next job.This is just another recipe for disaster.I was a Trans tech for ford for 30 years and have seen absolute nitemares leaving the shop only to back on a hook the next day.

Completely Agree! If I had a 2020 Super Duty with this problem, I would order a new 10R140 transmission after the repair was completed. Remove the original 10R140 transmission and install the new 10r140 transmission. Sell the original 10R140 transmission on eBay.

It boggles me how they build this transmission and this issue never shows up in testing. You would think they do real world testing outside the test rooms. Plus i would want a brand new revised transmission not a rebuilt by dealer trans. Especially since I paid for a new truck.

You’d think they’ve figured out how to put a reliable transmission in a truck by now. It’s only been what? 70 years of doing it. How the heck are the Japanese doing it so well. ? Maybe the answer is to drop atomic bombs on Detroit and start over. Seems like folks get their shit together after that. 😂😂😂😂

Well that just stinks - but thanks for sharing as I didn't get my letter yet (2020 F350 built 22Jun20)!... I can't even trust my local dealer to pull off an oil change without messing it up (the oring stuck to the filter housing and the tech just spun on the new filter - which caused a nice slow leak all over my driveway and garage floor...). So, I definitely don't feel they are competent enough to be tearing into a trans for this kind of rework. Not sure what I will do, but will probably wait until near the deadline to take it in so these guys can 'learn' on other trans first and get a process down.... And if it piles up before then so be it, since that is probably a better scenario if they put in a whole new trans.😒🤷‍♂️
