Great demonstration! Hats off to you for understanding how the diffs work. FYI, it my OPINION after watching your video that the Tremors front limited slip never engaged in your video. I *believe* what you experienced was computer controlled brake applications to individual wheels. I believe this because it did not “engaged” (work) until you put it in snow/sand moved which is computed related. Limited slips are mechanical, no computers needed.

All you had to do was hit the brakes when you were in normal 4x4 mode and you would have had the same results. It is a Torsen limited slip differential. The electronic aides apply the brake for you is all. The Raptor is the same. When I had mine, I would have had the rear locker engaged in that situation, but in situations where ground gave way, or snowy conditions when I didn’t want my rear locker engaged, this was all I did, touch the brake with the necessary force to engage the limited slip. Away you go. Sometimes mistake the Eaton automatic rear locker in the GM products (option code G80) as limited slip. It is not. When it engages the axels are locked. It doesn’t disengage until the forces are equalized and there is not enough force applied to keep the locker engaged. It actually forces you to be smoother on the throttle to get the most out of it. I see so many people give enough throttle to almost get going, then they let off and on that over and over again. It’s painful to watch.some of the guys on TFL used to do that. Tommy was terrible but a few of us explained to him the need to be smoother with the throttle and he has improved a lot! Enough to accept that the G80 is a decent rear locker! Most people prefer to engage them when they want it and that’s why the electronic engagement is so very popular. I prefer it as well, but learned to off-road with trucks equipped with the G80 option code. The tremors are nice, but too big for great off-roading. You have the exact right philosophy on why you own the truck and I agree with you totally!! I had a Raptor to use off-road in some private areas myself and a couple of other guys own. We have our own 6600 acre playground in the foothills and mountains. I took the Raptor onto some very serious trials the day I got it!! It was a base Raptor I got when they still had discounts on them it was the SuperCab. I already miss it. I sold it in the winter!! Hahaha. I have a 21 F150 Hybrid with a mild lift and better tires with the FX4 package but a fully open differential. The trail options. Like mud and snow, do help the front end though. Enjoy your truck!! It looks great!

Wanted the Ultimate Trailer Tow Camera System...but no longer available as a stand alone Option like it was in 2019. Ford packaged the extra 3 cameras with the SISSY BOY KNOB. The side and front cameras would have been good to have with the Tremor Package. Might check the salvage yards in 3 to 5 years for mirrors and front Ford oval with the cameras and other parts and add to the truck. A good friend ordered an almost identical truck on the same day from the same dealer. That truck has all the same Packages and Options except it has the new Sport Appearance Package...so, the LED lights and Tough Bed spray in liner had to be added. For what it's worth, most gear-based limited slip diffs act like an open diff when you have one wheel completely unloaded, like you did in the video. When both wheels have some traction, you can actually feel it working. When we had the snowfall here in Texas a little over a month ago, I have one section of my driveway that's about a 12% grade and very steep. I was able to go up it just fine in 4Hi and could actually feel the steering wheel slightly "torquing" back and forth while I cruised up the steep part of my driveway and one wheel would slightly slip and it would transfer power to the other side. It works well, but won't do much for the scenario you did here. This scenario is going to rely 100% on either the computer grabbing brakes on one wheel to simulate having traction on the unloaded side, or you're going to need that rear locker. Either way, the truck has lots of options to try to get yourself out of any trouble you may have gotten yourself into.

Very interesting. I wish Ford offered the Tremor package in the shorter SuperCab. I'd guess the front limited slip system is a computer controlled brake actuated limited slip system. It's effective, robust and inexpensive. A Torsen would also work but it's a somewhat complicated package of spur, gear and "worm" gears that might have torque limitations on a vehicle as heavy as a F250. It's also somewhat expensive. A front electrically operated locker encounters binding when turning risking damage to the driveline and making it difficult to steer. They can be programmed to disengage under certain situations but then it's essentially an open differential. Thanks for the review

I might have commented this on your other video but if not… Dana developed a traklok LSD specific to the super duty trucks. It’s a 100% clutch based LSD and not a Torsen style like in the F-150 tremor and raptor. The little bit I’ve managed to read about it, it would sound like it was chosen over the Torsen because of strength. My F-350 Tremor is supposed to arrive at the dealer tomorrow. Seems to still be a lot of debate on the "LSD" technology in use with not a lot of sources. According to an article on Hagerty about the Superduty Tremor it uses a Dana limited slip. Looking that up it seems to be a Electronic Limited Slip Differential (ELSD). KZfaq "Electronic Limited Slip Differential technology for light vehicles" and the first video will give light details on how it works. That description looks like it fits the behaviors we see in these 2 videos. Also stated in the Hagerty article "In off-road driving modes, one front brake is automatically applied to a wheel in the air to direct torque to the opposite side". This is still conjecture, not facts, but the shoe fits. Seems like it would be easy enough to determine if the Dana system is used by looking at the front axle. I do think we can all agree that the behavior seen here is lackluster compared to what we would like, whatever they want to call it.
@Upliftyourbrothers3 жыл бұрын
I believe it’s a torsion style. It won’t lock with massively different traction levels. (One wheel on ice, and the other on pavement) They can be helped with some brake engagement. They also are somewhat speed sensitive. They work really good most of the time, but they are not a replacement for an actual electric locker. Agree, rear locker and front limited slip works for 99.9% of people and uses.

I have not heard any details or specifications on the Limited Slip in the front Dana 60 differential. If it is the standard factory OEM style limited slip......those wear out and do not last long. I could be wrong...but what I have read...the BEST is the Detroit TrueTrac with the HELICAL gears....aka, "Worm Differential". Lots of guys like these both front and rear instead of e-Lockers or air lockers. The Detroit TrueTrac AND the DynaTrac Heavy Duty Free Spin Front Hubs - DynaLoc will be future upgrades to the Dana 60. The DynaLoc hubs are heavy duty.....strong "old school" technology with serviceable Timken bearings.....with the "Free and Lock" settings. The Ford OEM hubs are weak...have throw away "unit bearings".....with "Auto and Lock" settings...and uses a solenoid and pneumatic system (something else to break down) to engage the hubs when the knob on the dash is selected from 2H to 4 H or 4L. Granted, the DynaLoc hubs will require getting out of the truck and turning the hubs from Free to Lock before going off road. Are you sure your truck even has the torsen diff? There are F150 Tremor videos that have the torsen diff and it’s night and day.
@BigBoyToyzz Жыл бұрын
I think the F150 has the Torsen and Super Duty has the limited slip.
@JsGarage3 жыл бұрын
Man that wasn’t even trying to move. Thought it was supposed to be a Torsen lsd. It should have tried harder to turn both tires. The one setting that worked probably caused a brake locking function. Not sure why rock mode would do that though.

Why can't you just get out and manually lock the front hubs by turning the dial in the center of the hubs?

I don't think it works that way, but I'll give it a try next time I'm out there and see if there is a difference.

He can.......BUT, this video is not about a "hub issue".....but instead a "differential issue". He is show casing the Ford OEM Limited Slip in the front Dana 60 differential. The Detroit TrueTrac with Helical gears would be a better limited slip. That said.....more about hubs. For the last several years.......since the first Super Duty trucks rolled off the assembly line in 1998 - 1999.....trucks with the NV 273 transfer case and ESOF...the front hubs on the Dana 60 have "Auto and Lock: settings" with throw away "unit bearings"...and solenoid and pneumatic system to engage the hubs when set on Auto. I could be wrong, but think the trucks with the NV 271 transfer case and MSOF (shift lever in the floor) had the old "Free and Lock" settings with serviceable Timken bearings. Those hubs had to be turned from Free to Lock. Read my other post for additional details.
@spetznazix452 жыл бұрын
there's a locking hub on the front wheel where you can manually lock them together, just turn it clockwise to lock them and counter clockwise to put them on auto
@BigBoyToyzz2 жыл бұрын
Yep, that's why I leave them in "auto". So they... do it automatically. :) They don't "lock" together though like a diff lock.
@lt_hammerfist55322 жыл бұрын
@@BigBoyToyzz what’s the difference on that? I was under the impression that locking the hubs locked the front wheels together like a diff locker. Thanks for the demonstration btw.

@BuildingByFaith2 жыл бұрын
@@anonymous_friend the auto/lock knows are for the hubs not the differential. In auto, the hubs are automatically locked by vacuum when the transfer case is pit in 4WD. In Lock, they are locked all the time. The hubs connect the axle shafts to the wheels.

glad i didn’t get the tremor now i wanted the front limited slip diff and it’s useless. That was all traction control grabbing the brake of the front spinning wheel and sending power the the wheel with traction. called simulated limited slip. Disappointed this guy didn’t know that. It was extremely obvious that the front differential doesn’t work well at all

I would rather just have a true locker up front. LSD is too slow.
@happycamper635211 ай бұрын
Nothing, nothing, nothing replaces a true front locker. Nothing. I passionately hate these bulls*** "modes" that are mostly useless in true off-roading. No truck on this planet should ever be allowed to be called a 4x4 unless it can simultaneously power all four wheels at once with true locked differentials. My truck is a 3-wheel drive. I have a rear locker and "A-TRAC" which simply applies brakes on a spinning front wheel so that the other tries to spin instead (in my case an old beat up TRD Off-Road Tacoma). That's not four wheel drive. Not by a long shot. It's 3 because one is braked. I believe that's all we see here on this video too. Many dozens of thousands of dollars for fake 4x4s. Is Chevy the only one that has a real front locker these days? Going from three to four wheel drive is a 33% increase in pulling traction. That's very significant on steep inclines where even a small slip can cause an uncontrolled and unstoppable slide. Going from 4 to 3 is a 25% reduction in traction. I know the math is odd, but true. I want 100% of the wheels getting powered at once.
@truth95911 ай бұрын
@@happycamper6352 Totally agree. My truck has those offroad modes, but I never use them. I just turn on the diff lock when I need it. That's all I need.
@shawnriddle30183 жыл бұрын
I dont think the Limited slip makes any difference what brand it is. When you switch drive modes the ABS is why it moves forward. Jeep cherokee does the same thing without the infamous Ford Torsen. Jeep Vari lock. Better than an open diff alone but far short of a locker. Traction control system. LSD do not lock ever. Your switching the torque bias to the opposite wheel.

Your LSD isn't working. Or this isn't a a true limited slip. Maybe, this is something new that is only engaged when actuated by the computer when drive modes are changed. My raptors front torsion LSD is always ready to push the lock down when in four wheel drive
