Ford Truck Alignment, with twin I beam suspension.
Tutorial describing the adjustment of a twin I beam suspension, on Ford trucks from the 1990's using an aftermarket sleeve, when the coil springs sag down due to wear and tear, or overload, camber becomes negative, the solution is either replace the coil springs or use an aftermarket sleeve.

Thanks for making this great and informative video on Twin I beam alignment. Your short vdeo explains in seconds what I struggled with understanding on my 1985 Ford based motorhome since years. In fact it took me years to realize the springs have sagged and were in fact the reason for too much negative camber, which in turn throws off caster, making it harder to keep the truck centered and causing excess wear to the steering gearbox. I've bookmarked this video and will use it to help others who I encounter with the same issues. Cheers!

Good luck, Caster reading should be within 0.5 to 0.75 deg split between left and right, pulling towards the lower angle, however pull may be caused by bad or underinflated tire, or different tires, dragging brakes, etc., Hope they fix it. Thanks for your comment.

@@CarlosMDominguez followup here. The caster was off. The left was 3.0, rt was 5.5. The forums for cutaway chassis motorhome recommend getting both over 5, but the best they could do was 4.2 & 4.5 with their largest cam possible on the left. That was 2 alignments and 4 new cams in 6 mos/3k miles, $422 total... its riding better with slight right pull now on normal crown interstate. I hope it holds that but i do drive on washboard pothole roads occasionally for camping. My tires always age out before they tread out. 52k miles odometer with steering linkages all in great shape.

can you explain what happens when you add a leveling kit in the front or raise it by 2-3 inches? what if you add drop brackets? on a 90 f series
@CarlosMDominguez
@CarlosMDominguez Жыл бұрын
If you raise it it will increase camber just as if you pick the vehicle up from the frame, you still have to fine tune the alignment with a lesser value cam, on the drop brackets for what I can tell, have a cam adjustment so you can correct for camber, however I never done such modifications myself. I hope this explains it.

I have a 1999 f250 with a factory adjustable upper cam. My truck has all new OEM parts ... I have gone to two alignment shops and they have no clue the upper cam needs adjustment so they check toe and give it back .. The truck originally stayed true and straight and now wanders when you steer.. The toe seems good but the caster camber seems off .. like a oversteer condition ... Also the wheel does not return to center easily without a hand assist . I looked at the bushings and if you were looking down at the truck forward .. the drivers bushing is at around 10:30 o'clock and the passenger side is at 2:15 this is the center line of the cam position . The last alignment shop gave me a printout LF .4 deg camber with 3.5 caster.... the passenger is .6 deg camber with 3.5 deg caster. I want to adjust the bushing myself was looking for your advice . Some forums call for more caster . My thoughts are like a shopping cart ... with less caster I am on top of the wheel and it is sensitive to any steer right or left with no force to hold it center
@CarlosMDominguez
@CarlosMDominguez Жыл бұрын
For what you say, camber and caster are good, 3.5 deg is good, 0.5 deg camber is also good. (the position of the cam does not matter much) perhaps other problem is causing stability problems, for example, very hard to turn because very tight ball joints, or power steering gear box, or if you replaced parts, make sure they are installed correctly (something may be upside down or backwards things like that, although twin I beam systems are simple, sometimes happens, specially when oversteering) but most likely hard to turn ball joints would be a suspect. Good luck.

I have a ford super duty passenger bus and the camber appears to be very positive. Is it possibly designed this way to compensate for weight?
@CarlosMDominguez
@CarlosMDominguez Жыл бұрын
No. Not if it's excessive, or some special application, all vehicles should come aligned out of the factory. Weight loading is already factored in with the stiffness of the springs. Check your alignment. It may be the toe in (optical illusion). Good luck.

I put new coil springs on my 94 F150. I now have positive camber. Is there anyway to know to what degree I have without going to an alignment shop?
@CarlosMDominguez
@CarlosMDominguez Жыл бұрын
The problem is that when your camber changes so it does the toe in, you could scribe the tires and measure toe with a tape measure, just to make sure is not going to be more than 1/8" in or out. With regard to camber, it's a little harder to measure accurately, I have used my iphone's level app in the past, (putting it against the wheel or tire) just to have an idea how bad it is, (more than a degree), I think you may consider taking it to the alignment shop. Good luck.

Most TTB systems do that. I would say thats normal. I have seen this phenomena since I started working on alignments late 1980s . Do to the design of ttb.
