Glorious Malaise-era marketing. The Malibu later added an opening vent window in the rear doors, but the main glass still didn't roll down. And it's funny how they used to make _everything_ an option, even hubcaps! Just to advertise the lowest base price, for a totally stripped-out model that no one ever actually bought. Even that 4-speed manual they boasted about was rarely equipped on the Granada.

I think it replaced the 3 on the tree in 1977.

Well, you got the base caps, often the small "dog dish" style. The full sized ones, or the better looking ones, cost more.

After a year or two, probably about 200 pounds would rust off off the Aspen / Volare', vastly improving its mileage against the Granada.

@jdslyman In 1985, I bought a 76 Granada for $700. I lived in Spokane, WA at the time. The car had some rust bubbles that were starting under the rear windows, but I buffed the thing up and it still looked pretty good. I also had to replace a few things under the car that rust was starting to attack. I sold it about a year later for the same price. I'm guessing that it probably hit the wrecking yard around 1990.

Chunky analog backdrop graphics...these were ubiquitous at that time - I find them rather endearing.

This video was very well done, especially since salespeople have short attention spans. (Clearly they were forced to watch this during training). The video is also VERY telling on what Ford was REALLY trying to do versus the "my idiot friends and neighbors think i bought a Mercedes" ad campaign that implied Granada was somehow a cut-rate luxury car.

I am loving that huge wall of 1970s fake wood on Granada. I think I'd be a Granada buyer if I wanted a midsize sedan back then, but in reality I'd probably have gone with a wagon -- '78 Ford LTD II wagon.

I loved my 76 a beautiful car! Seats fully reclined…

If I were buying Ford in that size bracket in '78 the all-new Fairmont would've been a lot more appealing, especially since the Fairmont came as a wagon which with that line's slightly downmarket positioning could be had for about the price of a Granada sedan. The Fairmont was a new platform, first of the Fox bodies, while the Granada was a warmed-over 1960 Falcon.
@turnne2 жыл бұрын
@nlpnt The Granada had better build quality was a quieter/ smoother car and had a much better option feature set than the Fairmont It was a class above and priced accordingly
@pcno28322 жыл бұрын
The Fairmont had more potential, but being aimed at the "compact" market, it had a penalty-box interior. It wasn't until the debut of the FOX-based Granada, then "LTD" that Ford could offer a FOX body with the opulence of a well-optioned Granada.

Man I remember my Dad buying a granada! His was fully loaded! Power everything! Power windows, Power door locks, Air condition am/fm stereo with 8track! Mag wheels too! His was a dark brown with the landau top. Man that thing was smooth on the road and pretty quiet too! His was the 351ci 5.8L.

I'm not sold on the Granada I'm afraid. Not a patch on European Granada of the era in styling.
@pcno28322 жыл бұрын
I like the styling of the U.S. Granada better than most of its competitors and better than many of the sedans Ford was selling in the USA during this time (LTD II, Fairmont, etc.). It's a little over-ornamented, but very well proportioned. And, while I don't love the looks of the European Granada, it was obviously a far more advanced platform, bigger on the inside, smaller on the inside, much more refined suspension, than the U.S. model which was a re-styled Falcon. But they were really aimed at different ends of the market, with the American version built down to a very low price level. And, in this market, Ford was stuck with performance stifling emissions regulations that would render any car at least somewhat inferior.

Back in the mid '80's I worked at a place that had a Granada as a company car. I drove it occasionally and was not impressed. Around the office we called it the Grenade.

Was it the later restyled Granada on the Fox platform? Those were awful.

I always liked the plush and elegant styling of the 1975-1980 Granada Ghia...but the Fairmont Ghia/Futura models were actually superior because of their Euro-handling, better seating position, and more economical 6-cylinder engine. The 1978 Chevrolet Malibu was good looking and had a comfortable ride... but needed the gas hungry 5.0 V-8 (like the Granada) because its six-cylinder engine was underpowered. The Plymouth Volare had terrible build quality except for its drivetrain.

But the Granada was going on its 4th model year. People want fresh styling.

The US Granada's definitely the ugly duck of the bunch... Wait a minute... The 4 door '78 Malibu had rear windows you couldn't roll down? What the? How did that make it to production?
@RoadCone4113 жыл бұрын
The Malibu rear door was a terrible design - obviously Chevrolet’s bean counters won the battle over the designers and common sense. I bet that cost Chevy a lot of sales. The Granada wasn’t that bad looking for its day actually, not as sleek as the then-new Fairmont but quite a lot more modern looking than its predecessor the Maverick.
@frothe423 жыл бұрын
I believe the fixed rear door windows was an attempt to keep interior dimensions similar to the outgoing Malibu, which was the same size as the Impala/Caprice Classic in 1977.
@Infinitrium3 жыл бұрын
AFAIK, the reason the rear windows didn’t roll down is because GM thought they could upsell more people on air conditioning which had a nice profit margin for them
@daviatorcustoms31682 жыл бұрын
A few years later, Chrysler did the same thing with the first couple years of the Dodge Aries K and Plymouth Reliant K.
@BeepBoopBeep72 жыл бұрын
They sold it as a safety feature "your kids can't fall out because they don't roll down" or so the people who I knew that had them would say. But in the Malibu you could crack the rear vent windows for what it's worth

Back then, my neighbor had a Mercury Monarch 2-door coupe with plenty of options including a high-end stereo I was always jealous of, and I of course never owned a car with THAT great of a stereo!!! Cars today (like my Nissan Altima) have terrible stereos...
@pcno28322 жыл бұрын
I don't remember any factory stereos from the 1970s that were better than barely-mediocre. That Altima stereo would have to be pretty terrible to be worse than the Monarch's.

@@wintersbattleofbands1144 I did, and it didn't work. Speaker quality on the BASE model Altima is terrible. I saw the brochure online and they DO make a premium stereo complete with multiple speakers, but I got my car from a place that sells ex-rentals so all I can do is upgrade my speakers at an audio shop.

Absolute drivel - a video trying to portrait a car which has no discernible advantages over its competitors as better - I especially like the bit where he raves about the Granada’s standard features over the volare - yet if you spec up the volare to the same level it’s still cheaper lol - hmmm not really seeing the advantage there. Car makers were properly desperate back then weren’t they 😂
