It's a reasonably accurate portrayal with the exception of Leo Beebe who was a real historical figure. While the relationship between Shelby America and Leo Beebe was contentious they made him the scapegoat in the movie for all the corporate bureaucracy BS they had to deal with. Enzo Ferrari's statement when he refused Ford's offer was verbatim. The scene were Shelby is selling the same Cobra to multiple people is classic Shelby. He was a Conman, but everyone loved him anyway.

One major mistake they made in this movie. Shelby American (Shelby's company, NOT FORD) was the first American manufacturer to win at Le Mans. They did it in 1964, two years before Ford did. As a "car guy", you should know this.

@@757optim Yes, but it's still the first victory for an American manufacturer. This win at Le Mans was also the reason Ford recruited Shelby to work on the GT40. The movie absolutely made no mention of Shelby Daytona's victory at Le Mans. Instead, they used Shelby's "racing experience" at Le Mans as the reason for recruiting him, and not his knowledge in building fast cars.

Today I learned that Toni knows Italian. How is it you know Italian, Toni? Ken Miles was an honest to god real life hero. He fought in WW2 against the Nazis then came to the US and dominated the world of racing. He was a stone cold bad ass.
@rawschri
@rawschri 5 ай бұрын
Yes, Ken Miles drove in support of the British Tanks in the 21st Army group. He was a founder member of the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, ( REME ) tasked with repairing tanks and getting them back into the fight, He was discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He was present at the liberation of the Belsen concentration camp, and was finally discharged into the British Army Reserve in April 1946 ... It also meant he was 46 when Ford won Le Mans in 1966, which is a venerable age for a racing driver !! A genuine British hero and legend ...

As a lifelong gearhead, I love this film. For those who don't have prior knowledge of racing or this in particular, it's not going to have the same impact. I grew up on American racing (Trans Am & SCCA) & then came to appreciate the racing of this era, now considered vintage/classic. The race depicted here in Le Mans, located in France & is a 24 hour endurance race. Alongside the Nürburgring, 24 Hours of Daytona & Sebring as the top of the toughest races on the planet. What Ken Miles & Carroll Shelby accomplished is amazing. (If y'all haven't watched "Rush" or "Le Mans" I highly suggest them!😊)

Worthy of note is that, while Phil Remington said, "sometimes they don't get out of the car", it was the opposite that killed Ken. He lost control of the car at over 200 mph, causing it to tumble and getting ejected in the process. His neck snapped upon impact with the ground. Best I can say is that at least he didn't suffer. 22:10 Having the drivers run to their cars was discontinued a few years later, precisely because it resulted in too many accidents. Since 1970 the race has started with the drivers in their seats. Incidentally, if you enjoy that race and want to see a vintage film about it, I cannot recommend enough Le Mans (1971) with Steve McQueen.

13:40 - The engine wasn't from scratch. Both GT40 engines were heavily lightened (including aluminum block and heads) and race-prepped derivatives of Ford's production engines. That 7-liter engine they decide to put in was similar to what went in full-size Fords of the time, while the smaller 4.7 was basically a very souped-up Mustang engine.

This is a true story. Fun fact 50 years later on the anniversary of this race both companies raced again and Ford won Laman once again. There is a Documentary movie of that 50 year anniversary race. 2nd fun fact Ford company was born from racing. Ford wanted to make affordable cars for all family's to own. Other companies stopped his from developing his company. So to get recognition he raced against the best driver of the time with there own custom race car. FORD won the race on the last lap.

3:00 - "Why is he on the wrong side of the car?" - In this race, Carroll Shelby was driving for Aston Martin's race team (his car in this scene is the Aston Martin DBR1). Aston Martin is a British car company and in Britain, they drive on the left side of the road (hence the right-hand drive configuration). This movie also low key showcases two automotive titans during their young and upcoming years. Carroll Shelby was known for his AC Blower Cobra roadsters that were demonic fast during the 1960's and 1970's while Lee Iacocca was instrumental to the development of the Ford Mustang, the Mercury brand revival, and the Ford Escort (his final year at Ford yielded a $2 billion dollar profit). Iacocca also brought Chrysler back from near-bankruptcy in the early 1980's.

Eventually people started making their race cars with the driver on the right side of the car because most tracks are run clockwise and it makes for better handling due to better weight distribution. With more right turns than left turns you get a better centre of gravity when you move the driver to the side of the car that is in the inside of the majority of turns. So the car turns slightly better in those turns. The advantage isn’t huge, but still big enough that they bothered doing so.

Shelby only produced two blown Cobras so your statement about him being known for his "AC Blower Cobras" is a little iffy. The correct name of the car is Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake.

She is played by Penelope Cruz. He is played by the younger Darth Vader, star wars guy. He was also a big time snob and could really rub people the wrong way...or motivate, depending on how u saw it. At a car show in the 60s or late 50s i believe, a young parts designer, who normally built tractors and farm equipment, came up to Enzo, and told him about an idea he had for Ferrari suspension and gears. Enzo asked him who he works for, what cars does he work on. The guy said, i work on tractors. Enzo said, go back to ur stupid tractor and farm equipment! The guy he was talking down to.... I had the experience of being acquainted with Carroll Shelby and meeting Ken Miles when I was 13 years old. This movie portrays their outrageous personalities with delightful accuracy. I even got to see Ken drive the number 98 Shelby Monaco King Cobra in a match race at Green Valley Motor Speedway, just north of Fort Worth, TX, in February of 1964. He raced against a special super light Corvette race car for about 30 minutes and finished with an 8 lap lead. In the summer of 1965, Ford unveiled the Shelby Mustang GT350 and GT500 at Green Valley Motor Speedway, with Ken Miles, "the champion of Le Mans" as the Ford factory rep who pulled off the coverings. Carroll Shelby also created the V-10 Viper for Dodge. It was the first car he designed for a major manufacturer where he was given complete control of every aspect of the design and engineering, from the internals of the engine to the type of metal used for the frame and the shape of the taillights, all on an unlimited budget. The Dodge Viper GT 650 was the last race car he designed before he died. The movie had to be honest all the way to the end, because Carroll and Ken were guys who didnt put up with BS.

It was surprising that a lot of women went to the theatres when this came out. My wife and I saw it twice there. The relationships made the movie

I can see that. So women went to watch with girl friends? Not really a chick flick but I could understand that they wanted to watch because of the actors involved. - Toni 🤓

Why is the steering wheel on the wrong side. As a Brit i would stay the steering wheel is on the correct side, the right side. The car that he is driving is the AC Corba which is a fusion of British and American. The car is a 2 seater Britsh sports car made by AC Cars of Thames Ditton, England which was modified by Shelby to replace the 2.0 litre 6 cylinder engine with a 4.7 litre Ford V8 that turned the small British sports car in to a 185 mph rocket ship. AC Cobra is one of my favourite cars, i will never be able to afford one they are so expensive ~$13 million for an orginal and for a new (replica) is £285,000.

@@clutchpedalreturnsprg7710 Imagine the cost to convert the uk’s or Japan’s roads it would be insanely costly on top of how long the road network would have to be down to do the work. At this point even if there was a will to do it, it don’t think it is even feasible to even consider it.

Hello, many corners to the story were cut to create this film. Many people involved with the cars were excluded. Many corners were added to fluff up this story. Such as any battles after grocery shopping. Luckily KZfaq is chock full of videos of actual events. Interviews of the people involved. A sideline fellow would be Lynn Park, " Mr. Cobra. He knew Carrol Shelby, built parts for Shelby. He probably is Mr. Cobra because he owns more cobras than anyone. There were actually two cars in two different classes being raced against Ferrari. If you have any interest KZfaq has the story. Here is a video of an Australian that hand built an all-aluminum Ford GT-40. KZfaq video: Jim's Hand Built Ford GT40 - Born This Way Modifiers Ep. 1

The Cobra-Ferrari Wars was a much better story than this. The only thing that made this interesting was how the Ford company itself cheated Ken Miles of his victory.
