This intriguing film shows how Ford designed cars in the early 1980s, using a blend of traditional and, new, computerised methods. It is a five year process, from the first sketches through to the first models rolling off the prouction line. The Ford Sierra is featured and we see a full scale clay model of an XR4 being created and wind tunnel testing. The sequence on component testing set to fairground music is particularly well done.

Never forget seeing the Sierra at Dagenham around 82, we were on a day trip there from Watford College and Cortina's were still in production, the staff were friendly and the guide jjoked with us saying we werent supposed to see the Sierra, I miss those care free days of College, I still luv cars as much as I did then. Thanks for a super upload, best wishes to all involved, friends, family and fellow viewers.

Greetings from Finland. German and British Fords were quite popular here in the 1960s and 1970s

Really interesting to see one of these design documentaries from the 1980s. Most I've seen are from the 1960s

Great video! Would like to see more Escort mk3 development videos. I know that there are some! Also, very cool is Sierra mk1 model range show up, with beautiful Fords own composed music.

There's the inimitable Sir Jackie Stewart driving the XR3 @ 14:03 & later @ 16:06 onwards.

I must admit it was a gamble by Ford to replace the boxy shape of the Cortina with the rounded appearance of the Sierra. Having driven and owned both it was a great choice and replacement in my view.

I grew up with Ford's all around me. My family owned Escorts , Capris, Anglia's, and Cortinas. In South Africa the Top Ford's came with the 3.0l Essex engine which always were upgraded to the 3.4l conversion. Ford's were family cars with a very sporty character. My brother owns a MK4 Cortina 3.0S and I own a Sierra XR-6. Which I would never ever let go off. All new, modern cars are just copy and paste designs. Bland, uninspired, boring....

Interestingly, even with all the testing the original mk3 Escort released in October 1980 was heavily criticised by the motoring press for it's poor ride.
