Absolute beautiful job sir one of the best restorations ive seen of a fordson major it was also in keeping as well. Normally as soon as a 6 cylinder D series goes in a major then stupidly big back wheels follow not on this restoration though it was all kept original except the engine and it looks quality i take my hat off to you sir.

This was done in British Guyana in 1979 ,fitted with the super Major type 6 cylinder engine, by C Dhanpaul at Mahaicony,others followed , a few still exist in West Bernice,,,very good job ,that's a industrial Ford 6,,,those come with aluminum sump's,,
@stefanwosinsky1935 Жыл бұрын
i have one with aluminum sump, but mine might need an overhaul sometime soon. also they turned the front axle around to make the triangle point forwards, i'm not a huge fan of that necessarily

Hi garry just at mine now. What did you use for the steering bar I see it's bent down did you just bend some piping and weld it?

Really neat the way you did those radius arms. You'd think they had always been there
@i.f.colville24973 жыл бұрын
But they are not articulated at the axle end so how does that work
@dendrus19493 жыл бұрын
@@i.f.colville2497 At first glance you would think that might be a problem, but this is exactly the same layout as the smaller Ferguson tractors which all performed without problems. I can only assume that any build up of tension is absorbed by the arms themselves flexing.
@mrcvx4 жыл бұрын
How did the radius Arms work in the long run? Do they allow enough pivot for the front axle? Finest conversion over ever seen BTW
@garyhover26884 жыл бұрын
Hi Thank you for your kind comment. The Radius Arms work fine. They are form a Dexter or a 4000 I think? I cut the fork off the donor arm and welded on the original super major fork as 4000 fork would not fit the major axel. Also to be on the safe side I placed a 20mm hi tensile rod inside the arm and filled it with cement, as I have seen some of these bend. Hopefully will not. so far so good.
@mrcvx4 жыл бұрын
That's great thanks. Does the track rod foul the fork or did it need another mod?. Also the rod going from the steering box to power steering ram is that just lengthened one that comes with the power steering kit or did you source a different one. Finally did you weld two bonnets or buy one
@garyhover26884 жыл бұрын
@@mrcvx I modified the track rod not because it would foul the fork but the larger sump on that engine got in the way. There are three options of sump for that engine. The difference being a drop in the pan at the front, mid, or a rear. If I could have found a rear pan sump “if that makes sense” I would not have had to modify the track rod, but couldn’t find one anywhere. The steering box arm I lengthened, from memory I think i use 1”1/8 en8 rod welding the old ball ends on the extended bar. The bonnet is two welded together. The tractor is about 10” longer than the old super major.

Stunning, well done! I'm putting a Perkins 6372 into my Major. Any tips on what to look out for or pitfalls??
@garyhover26885 жыл бұрын
Hi Thanks for your comment, I chose a ford cargo engine because most of the bolts holes line up with the fordson. All I had to do was make the flange for the bottom 5 or 6 bolts. some people don’t bother but that’s a bit risky. I would be interested to see your adapter plate for your Perkins. Just one thought, I think the Perkins max out at 2700 rev per min? I would be worried about spinning an over 50 year old fly wheel that quick. As the major was only made to do 1800 rev. Having said that, I do take mine up to 2000 rpm max. I know the tractor pullers push a lot more through there’s but they plate the clutch housing because they will let go if you over rev. Good luck with your project. Gary
@TheRenaultMan894 жыл бұрын
gary hover2 I've recently picked up an old 53 major with a tired engine and have also been offered a 6cyl for it that came out a water pump so it's an industrial engine a 2725e. Looks very similar to your cargo engine, I think it has the same bolt pattern apart from it does not have the "egg" shape to match the bottom of the clutch housing, it has an aluminium sump though, wondered if it would be strong enough if modified to suit the gearbox pattern without additional bracing from rear axle? Did your cargo engine have a cast sump? Fantastic job on your conversion, looks a factory finished example 👍🏻
@matui6983 Жыл бұрын
Is that all the rpm's the Fordsons get in a tractor 1800rpm? In a marine application the early Dagenham/590 series engines get 2250rpm while the D-series get 2450rpm and the Dovers get 2500 and the Sabres a bit more.
@vintagemachinery74154 жыл бұрын
Did you have to make anything for the clutch to work as I’ve been told I need to make a spacer between the clutch yoke and the actual clutch?
@garyhover26884 жыл бұрын
No nothing like that. The ford 6 cylinder bolted straight on The only thing you have to do is modify the bottom of the bell housing as the major is oval and the 6 cylinder is round. Some people don’t bother but its chancing it I think. I don’t like the idea of missing 3 or 4 bolts out of the bottom of the bell housing. It shows it at around 2mins Good luck with your project.
