Meddling in other people's business?
From Bosnia in 1994 to Syria today, via Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Mali, is western military intervention ever justified? In this episode of Head to Head at the Oxford Union, Mehdi Hasan challenges one of the world's most renowned public intellectuals, Bernard-Henri Levy, on the rights and wrongs of liberal intervention, and the difference between humanitarian concerns and the pursuit of special interests.

Libya had the highest economic standing in the whole of the African continent. Under Gadaffi, LIbyans enjoyed free health-care, free education, free electricity, interest free loans, and many other social benefits. Due to the fact that Gadaffi was promoting a new gold backed currency for Africa, he had to be taking out.

Deeply skeptical of anybody who talks with absolute certainty without entertaining the complexities. You can't talk intervention until you deal with the point made about Saudi Arabia pumping money and weapons to factions. You start with international condemnation of that, and reprisals - and to any nation acting similarly in other regions and conflicts. But vested interests don't want to do that. Vested interests want power to meddle, they don't want to end up having to condemn Israel. Then before war we increase world international refugee infrastructure and allow them to leave the land, we drop leaflets of routes that we will protect or conduct rescue or defensive strong holds, while we allow them to leave. Only in this environment can we be sure we have moral authority to save civilians from a mad man. Only then will be seen as friends not imperialists.

I agree in general with the guest despite all the hate here on these comments. As someone who benefited from an outside military intervention stopping a brutal regime, my view is that you shouldn't sit by and watch massacres happen when you can stop them. If it were you or your family involved I am sure you would welcome outside help. Obviously no intervention is without casualty but many don't seem to understand that this is not neccesarily the fault of the interveening party but of that who created the conflict in the first place. History has shown us time and time again what happens when the world turns a blind eye to peoples suffering by burtal regimes. The key is that you should not run around the world unnecessarily starting wars that destabilize a region and make things worse for a long long time especially for the same people you came to help. But you also have to keep in mind that things will always get worse before they get better and who knows how bad things would have gotten if left alone. Also, I believe that bad apples that are left to freely ramapage and cause distruction influence, motivate, and inspire others to do the same as they serve as examples that the world will sit there and do nothing. I just wish that more is done *after* the intervention as you cannot just wash your hands after dropping bombs. But to be honest, that should fall on a lot of people including the people that live in that society and those around them and not just on those that intervened. As for people/governments not always acting consistently with regards to where they intervene....my question is why is this a shock to anyone? It's fair to point it out in my opinion but its niave to get so hung up on it as it is human nature. For example, I care about the environment but also buy things that cause it harm. Now if I advocate for causes that support the environment how would it be helpful to try and "cancel" me because I am not perfect and have not always been consistent? I think the same applies here. If a government/leader failed to act in one conflict this does not therefore make their choice to act in another conflict wrong or motivated by nefarious reasons. I think Mehdi (the host) showed that he does not truly appreciate that people are complex with this regards. He seems too eager and proud of himself when he finds a contraction not realizing that you are dealing with governments run by people and not a set of codes on a computer that have to follow certain commands.

The only “moral” interventions happen in europe or white countries like the former Yugoslavia. When moral issues arose in Rwanda, the european dominated UN stood and watched against people armed ONLY with machetes. It’s hugely hypocritical how this isn’t pointed out. Stopping crowds armed ONLY with machetes is not as big a deal as stopping the well equipped Serbians, Iraqis or Syrians. There was no money to gain in Rwanda just like there was no money to gain in Kosovo. But in Kosovo white lives mattered. In Rwanda Black lives didn’t. All other interventions are in countries which are both geopolitically AND financially relevant to the west FOR the benefit of the west. There’s no honesty coming from this man.

The point of critical mass is a valid point. Countries should be able to maintain their sovereignty and deal with internal conflict by themselves - but when the critical mass of human rights violations reach a critical mass - some kind of intervention makes sense. So the questions are - what is critical mass? And what level of intervention is reasonable? I think intervention should involve disarming the war machine - so things that prevent further bombings - like a no fly zone are a good thing. And even having peacekeeping forces on the ground can be a good thing. And if we move to disarming it should be to disarm both sides of the conflict. But how should we come to this decision? It should be through the UN... But the problem we have now is that Russia is assisting in the bombing of citizens and blocking any UN based solution. And we need to address Russia's role, because they are not working to de-escalate the conflict but helping it to continue. As for saying that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is crazy - well we don't really know his mental state. I don't think he is in control anymore - many deaths are now blood on Russian hands and Russia has control over Assad.

This talks are good but they are only scratching the surface. They only mention in passing here and there… self/interest of the intervening countries, but never take the deep dive into all the multinational corporations of these same countries that went into Libya when the interim government was set up in Tripoli to make long sought after oil and hydro power deals. To understand the true purpose of the intervention, the discourse must go back to political and economic relationships prior to the “humanitarian” intervention.

Sorry but this arrogant host & guest speaker do not know what they're talking about, are they even aware of the facts? Who was it that backed all these terrorist groups in Syria in the first place in order to have regime change? This was actually the foreign policy of many western countries in Libya, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, o course many nations abstained from intervention, but we all know now, it was the US, UK, France as usual & their gulf allies who backed all these foreign fighters aka extremist wahhabist terrorists in Syria, they did this in Libya, Iraq, & they helped their allies in Saudi Arabia to do the same thing in Yemen as well. Humanitarian intervention is killing thousands of Yemeni's as we speak, yet no one speaks for those people. Turkey was also involved in aiding those terrorists in Syria from their own borders & even co-conspired with the US to attack Syria & also bought stolen oil from Syria from the extreme Wahhabist terrorist groups, was this talked about on this show, absolutely not, Jordan & other smaller gulf states were also involved in staging, regrouping all these terrorist groups. Israel was also involved in aiding the terrorists, on its border in the Golan heights, they gave medical aid & shelter to terrorists who fled Syria to the Golan heights in search of shelter & Israel gave them shelter & medical aid. Does this arrogant ignorant host or guest speak of these points? Absolutely not!!! It was the western goal of removing Assad from Power because he refused the Qatari pipelines. Instead he went with the Iranian pipelines. Aha!!! Why isn't this question even asked or pointed out by this arrogant host or guest? How, why the Syrian war even started? Not even addressed at all. This is called selective journalism, something we all see in western msm bias. This show is absolutely pointless because it attempts to whitewash what happened & wash western & its gulf allies hands of blood, & its aim is to paint western enemies aka independent countries/leaders as the source of the problem, instead of asking the right questions, they ignore certain questions because of conflict of interests. The Syrian war was a direct result of western meddling & including their gulf allies, including Qatar, but Qatar won't come out & admit this themselves will they? No, Qatar is a good country with good human rights, that don't & never have supported terrorism right? Wrong, Qatar is one of many supporters of terrorism in this region just like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Israel. Don't be fooled by this arrogant host let alone arrogant guest. This show is absolute garbage, & the arrogant host is a tool used by Qatar to paint rosy pictures of certain western countries & themselves. Typical whitewashing of war crimes backed & committed by western nations, their gulf allies including Qatar which they supported & backed to this day.
