'Foreigner' row: Opposition SDF demands Sikkim CM's resignation

The Sikkim Democratic Front on Tuesday demanded Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang's resignation amid the controversy surrounding the January 13 verdict of the Supreme Court that mentioned the Sikkim Nepalese community as ‘foreigners’ and thereby removed them from the ambit of the tax exemption provision. SDF spokesperson MK Subba accused the Tamand-led government of trashing an affidavit filed by the SDF government on Old Settlers IT Exemption case.
The Supreme Court in its order dated January 13, 2023, had directed the Centre to amend the definition of ‘Sikkimese’ in Section 10 (26AAA) of the Income Tax Act 1961 to include income tax exemption to all Indian citizens domiciled in Sikkim on or before the merger date of April 26, 1975.

The recent order of Hon’ble Supreme Court has left us stunned putting a capital question mark on our patriotism and even our very existence. It’s most unfortunate that the people who whole heartedly chose to become part of India in 1975 braving all odds, will now be subject to such ridicule in their own country. It’s totally unacceptable. There seems to be serious over looking or ignorance of history leading to this erroneous verdict which needs to be reviewed immediately. This is an emotive issue and if not addressed in true SPIRIT OF THE LAW OF THE LAND, it has the potential of sowing seeds of unrest and alienation in the minds of our sensitive people. Forces inimical to India may exploit the hurt feelings of people. We must guard against that. Having said that, I am more than sure that the Hon’ble Supreme Court would certainly undo the wrong provided that the Govt of Sikkim deploys the finest legal minds to handle the matter dexterously. I appeal to the peace loving people of Sikkim to keep their protest within the confines of law . and dignity. We will win… we must win. Anupama Ranjan Thapa, Delhi

The main population of Sikkim is Nepali Community, Lepcha, Bhutia and the language spoken is Nepali as well. please stop negative comments as Nepali community are living in Sikkim way before Sikkim was included in India

The Indo Nepal treate need urgent revision to protect the indegenous population of NE Region ..Such Nepal citizens should not be allowed to vote in local elections but may be allowed to continue their other activity. Some from Nepal after comming to India call themsef as Gurkhas and milking 2 cows

Old Sikkim we appreciate .those were the times . happiness were around the people but now Sikkim youth are moving aboard for works or they are becoming drug dealer drivers.

सर्वोच्च न्यायालय ले सिकिमे को आँखा छर्लङ्गै खोलिदिएको छ। विदेशी नागरिकताको issue मा यदि सिकिम सरकार , विपक्ष दल र सरकारी निकाय का प्रतिनिधि गण साच्चिनै गम्भीर छन भने तत्काल सामूहिक राजीनामा एकसाथ दिएर सिकिमेको सम्मान र अस्तित्व वचाउने इतिहासिक निर्णय लिने बेला आयो।

Nepali ma’am is a handicap for Sikkimese as the term Nepali denotes citizen of Nepal and the info Nepal treaty clause 6&7 puts u in imaginary Nepali camp, ether bet is gorkhajati and Gorkhabhasa as these names are ancestral names unlike Nepali even bihari9& Nepal is Nepali but he cannot become Gorkha as Gorkha is an ethnic name one should have never included the word Nepali in the eighth schedule it should have been the Gorkhabhasa name Sikkimese is good as it means people of Sikkim the term sikkimay nepali also nod safe
