A well known tip - soften the clay bar in warm water before the claying stage. Just makes the clay easier to shape.

I watch a lot of detailing videos and I have to say that I really enjoy the way you present your material. It's not like some people that sound like they're reading from a book--you explain yourself very well from a normal-guy perspective and it's different and refreshing. Thanks Jon and keep up the great work.

I agree. So many videos on KZfaq these days are so highly edited/crisp that it feels more like marketing than genuine content. I love this channel for not only the content, but it feels like 'real advice', and not like I'm being sold something

Good video Jon! Thanks. I do things a little differently personally, but its horses for courses i guess. I put my clay in a jug of hot water to soften it first. Much much more malleable then and much less likely to marr the paint I've found. I also don't use clay lube either. I use Garage Therapy Zero decon as a contact wash but also as a pre-wash snow foam. I'll then use what's left over in my cannon and bucket as my clay lube as I work my way around the car. I just find it has brilliant lubricity and the added surfactants just seem to make the claying process even more effective for me. Plus the car has then had, effectively, three hits with the zero decon. There's always a lot less contamination left meaning I don't need as much clay. Lol.

Hi ya John good video as usual I know what u mean about the tar a fallout still on the paintwork underneath a sealant I just bought a 5 series the dealer did exactly the same to me. A useful TIP with the built hamber clay is to put the clay into some hot water before you use it, it makes it much easier to fold and work with 👍

Hi Jon, I clay barred/polished my friends' car last week as he works near a farm (won't say what the fallout was) but when he returned this week all he could say was sorry about the state of the car. After a snow foam etc it looked newish I reckon after last week's treatment this helped to clean it.

Never used a clay bar before so your advice really helps. I’ve got a 30yr old and 21yr old car to do and I don’t think they’ve ever seen a clay bar! Also I read somewhere that immediately after claying you should wax it to protect the paint? Thanks!

I switched from claybars to nanoskin decontaminations sponges 7 years ago and never looked back. The way I do it now is to clay and wash at the same time. So I start with the pre-wash with a degreaser in the snow foam cannon, then pressure wash, do the fall out remover, pressure wash, wash with ONR and clay with the sponge while the panel is still wet, then dry the panel. Doing it this way adds maybe 15 minutes to the washing step, it's really, really fast. I normally use the fine sponge unless I notice heavy contamination. Sponges won't remove as much as claybars, but they don't scratch as much either and they save you a ton of time.

Hi Jon, I used the Bilt Hamber mild clay bar for the first time a few weeks ago following recommendations from one of your earlier videos. What I wasn’t prepared for however was the amount of marring and apparent damage it inflicted on the soft Black Toyota paint despite following every step religiously. It was always my intention to machine polish afterwards but the sense of dread after claying as a novice caused a squeaky bum moment.

Using first tar and glue remover might expose rust deposits under the tar... Also tar might contain small particles of asphalt, prone to deep scratching your paint... Personal experience, I prefer to do tar remover prior to cleaning my car, wash my car, dry it, iron remover, rinse it and claying it. So you actually just dry your car twice. Also using an acid shampoo prevent water spotting during claying

Never heard of the Korrosol before! Sounds like if it’s turning rusty contaminants purple then it must be similar to Kurust that’s a rust converter… and if it Shri is it that she’s great sense as the clay bar will lift it off easier! At the back of my car is an excessive amount of rust particles on the paintwork from the exhaust. I’d better get some of this stuff pronto! Ps in the video where you use the sponge/ microfibre applicator and take it out of the bucket; is the suds on the car from the Korrosol or is it car shampoo from the bucket you’re working it in with to wash the stuff off? Thanks again!

As posted in group, BH is only clay i use. and you dont need claylube. just water. as for the difference john, soft for regular cleaned cars, and cold day claying, ie winter. medium use for 1st claying and summer. regular for very heavy soiled cars and overspray. Also john, i cut my clay in 1/4 and use 1/4 a car, and even better cost effectiveness!

This video inspired me. I cleaned both cars and used Korosol and Clay Bar'ed for the first time, before polishing and waxing properly. It took nearly two days and I was so happy. I used so many of your videos for reference. But a week later and both cars have watermarks, tree leaves and sap, and bird poo. What do you recommend for maintaining clean cars because I don't want to have to deep clean every week, but won't a snow foam remove the polish and wax that I added last weekend? Once you've got a clean car, what do you recommend to maintain it? Thanks in advance. :D
@ForensicDetailing

love posts like this Owen. The bad news is no matter what you do the cars get dirty and having fresh protection can mean dried water spots are more noticable. So have some Koch Chemie FSE to remove water spots (make sure car is clean first) dont worry about stripping the wax, LSP is cheap and easy to apply. trust your LSP and reapply when its totally dead in 3-6 months. you can maintain it with detail sprays or nice easy spray and rinse.. but trust the LSP mate.

Nowhere near that frequently. It depends on the amount of contamination but probably once a year followed by a very light finishing polish on a DA to take out any scratches you just put in and keep the paintwork fresh. You could use a chemical fallout remover like Korrosol every few months to help keep the deposits to a minimum in a contactless fashion.

All a lot of dealerships are interested in is the marketing aspect of putting a sealant on a vehicle and pleasing the majority who don't know any better. My car had an autoglym package put on the paint when I bought it no bad thing in theory but they'd made an utter mess of the paint with a ten minute grind over with a rotary polisher. Took me half a day with some scholl to get it half decent.

If the iron particles are falling out, won't they get dragged about if you use a mitt to spread the remover?
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 3 жыл бұрын
some iron will get pulled into the mitt and dragged about... but look at the dirty clay bar.. you grind all that stuff over the surface when you clay... so gently going over some tiny fragments of fallout you cant even see is not a problem.

Don't suppose it was BMW Protect-X that was put on the car by the dealer? Will the decontamination process remove the coating if it's been put on top of the fall out? Do you then have to polish and put a new ceramic coating or wax on the car?
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 3 жыл бұрын
I think it was although they said guard-x decon would not remove this stuff no. it was hard curing rock hard and there were footprints off it everywhere.. all over the glass, the edges of the paintwork where it had not been buffed. who-ever installed it did a woefull job for whatever reason. totally shocking. they applied it on a thick layer of tar as well.

Hi mate I brought a 4 year old car with approx 20k miles The paint feels rough to the touch so I want to clay it I didn't know which clay to get so I bought built hamper medium. But after watching this video I'm thinking should have got soft. Is there a big difference? Will the marring be visible? Also on the instructions it says you can just use water. Is that sufficient in your opinion or will I have to buy ONR?

Marring will be vidable under heavy duty lighting after car is dry. Get a little da polisher to whizz over it with finish polish

I've wondered Jon if ONR actually does leave residue being as it's got polymers in I think? I actually do use ONR myself as clay lube but I've often wondered about this issue
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 3 жыл бұрын
Optimum said it leaves nothing behind but if that residue dries I can see it so it must be leaving something behind :) but it seems to wipe away.
@JoshuaLynn
@JoshuaLynn 2 жыл бұрын
@@ForensicDetailing OPT Talks about this. Yes, if ONR dries on the surface it will leave what they call "Polymer spots" instead of water spots. They wipe away easily usually. If not, a spot more of ONR reactivates the residue for easy wipe-off. This is what makes ONR such a great drying aide. After rinsing off a hand wash a spray down of ONR at 127:1 right away allows for good lubrication of the drying towel and an increased time to dry since it will prevent water spots. The same is true if using ONR as a clay lube at a higher ratio. If it dries, it is easy to sprits a little and wipe off.

There's a good way to show how a panel is contaminated - drag your hand on the surface, and listen for that 'sandy' sound. Then compare it to a clayed surface. You can literally hear the difference.

Cut out the bat in 5-8pieces. How meny cars you can do. That depends on the cars. After I don my Mercedes E270 estate I could easy use the clay for at least on more car. But I had also cleaned my car alot. After my friends Skoda I could put it in the bin because that car was nasty. So it's hard to say. But with the prices on Bilt Hamber it really doesn't matter if it hold 1 or 8cars.

Do you use a portion of clay for the whole car? Or it depends on the level of contamination you've already removed and build up in the clay? From safety perspective, I'd use one portion for each different panel of the car.
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 3 жыл бұрын
I tend to use a couple of small pieces on an average car 2-3 pucks, when I see it get dirty I know its gonna scratch a bit more even after folding.. but sometimes theres nothing on the cars and the clay is good to use loads more times. i think its personal preference really this.

Quick question! Can I use a fall out remover / tar remover and NOT claybar the car then hand polish and wax the car if I don’t have the time to claybar and machine polish? Thanks for the great content btw always look forward to a new video. Only just found out about your channels in the last month. 👍

chemical decon, makes physical decon easier it does not replace it. short answer is not really callum mate. but some people will wash they car.. dry it and spray it with panel wipe or like BH cleanser fluid (which is a bit like a tar and glue) and then wax it. what I cant tell typing this post is how much contamination is on your car.

@@ForensicDetailing thanks for ur reply and time looks like Iv got a long weekend too come! Lol Iv gone and bought the da8 from in2detailing but scared to use it on my new (to me) car.
