Saw this on a video: Add car shampoo to a spray bottle diluted with water... and spray it to the wash mitt after every rinse. That way you have maximum lubrication and 100% of the car shampoo’s capabilities after every wash-rinse cycle!

Thank you very much for this knowledge. I had always been doing the 1 bucket method without rinsing the mitt each time before dunking for more soap. The same reason applies as I am washing personal cars and I am too lazy to break out a ton of equipment just for a weekend wash. Your addition of hosing the the mitt before picking up more soap just solved the excess dirt part of the 1 bucket equation. Thank you for the knowledge sharing! Personally I enjoy your videos as while it is lengthy, you make your videos like an actual conversation with full of meaningful information. Keep up the good work!

I wish i found you when I first started getting into detailing!! I love having a clean and well polished car, but I'm also time strapped. So iv always been on the hunt for the best of both worlds (of course comes with compromises) but i can enjoy my nicely paint corrected car and still not spend hours trying to keep it looking at its best and worrying! More time doesn't always mean a proper wash to slowly void all my hard work. Brilliant!! Also I love the level of detail you go into! Big thank you!

Thanks for your videos, it's a learning experience to go from a bucket and a sponge to using decent products, mitts and microfiber cloths. The difference in the finish is incredible, I couldn't believe how clean the wash water was at the end! Keep up the great work.

Really enjoy your reviews! In my opinion, you are one of BEST reviewers of detailing products across the entire KZfaq community. You are "down to earth" and give your honest opinions. You also freely admit when you don't know something or you just have an idea about something but make no claims whatsoever other than your own experiences with the products you review which is very informative, honest, and refreshing in my opinion. I've watched as many of your videos as I can on my time off and i've actually purchased quite a few of the recommended products and have had good luck with pretty much ALL of them! That's good reviewing! I particularly liked this video about the ONE bucket method versus two. I agree with your ideas on this subject 100%. There are pluses and minuses to both the two bucket (if done correctly) and your one bucket method. I personally like YOUR method with the one bucket. I too agree that many times, the grit guards just don't work as they advertise. The idea is great, but honestly there is too much grit in the water for them to be 100% effective. I'd give them a 50% effective the majority of the time. But personally, I like your idea of rising the MITT with a strong stream of water FIRST, then get more soapy water on the mitt. I also agree with using a soap that is as SLIPPERY as you can possibly get it. I'm going to try that No Rinse additive from Optimum Polymer Technologies for sure. I've read a ton about that soap but crazily, I've never tried it. Don't know why. I do use several of their products including their Hyper Compound, Hyper Polish, and Opti-Bond dressing, all of which are good products. Finally, one SUGGESTION. Why don't you either paint or put up a decal behind you in your garage advertising your channel? I notice you have that great white painted area directly above your Telivision set in garage which would be a fantastic spot for a sign which says "FORENSIC DETAILING CHANNEL". Just an idea sir. After watching about 15 of your videos this afternoon (i was off today....LOL) I thought to myself...."Why doesn't he put a nice colorful sign above that TV that advertises his channel? I like this method, will try it and the wash pads. I hate having 2 heavy buckets to drag around the car. Better then to have one wash bucket on each side of the car. Most important to me is to get the car as clean as possible before even touching the paint. BH Auto Foam works really well especially on a dirtier car.

Great Video, FDC.. I have done 1-2 even 3 (two rinse) bucket methods.. 2 grit guards in every bucket.. Honestly giving all the credit to APEX Detailing..Brian is a real force! He uses 2 buckets with multiple mitts, tossing used mits in rinse bucket (to wash later) thereby never putting a dirty mitt in the soap wash bucket. This idea is so simplistic yet genius, and makes so much sense. I use mitts but as you say 1.20 a pea or quid or whatever that stuff is..lol (America here) its just crazy not to use multiple ones at such a cheap price. This method never introduces dirt back into the soap giving the added benefit (sealable bucket lid) of reusing your leftover soap. Having multiple vehicles I found this to be especially cost effective for maniacs like me that wash their rides 2 or more times a week.. Keep up the great videos!

Àm so glad I took the time to watch this vid as I was about to buy into the 2 bucket method even though it's expensive for what you get - so glad I haven't wasted my money !!! You just make so much sense & common sense to me. Your process explanation couldn't have been clearer & the demo on your van proves the point. Love the added tips too (like adding ONR). You views & recommendations are becoming very trustworthy after just watching & trying a couple of your tips, thank you. The challenge now is to drag myself away from years of using Autoglym almost exclusively as I've *not* seen you recommend one of their products in the 2016 awards vid or mention them elsewhere so far? Your advice is valued as you come across as a straight-up, no nonsense guy, so will use up what remains of my Autoglym arsenal then try your 2016 'gold award' products one by one. Keep up the good work, it is appreciated from this end. The only positive criticism that could be offered is to try to bring the average vid length down without losing tat all important core content. Sometimes there is too much detail in there that doesn't really add to the quality of what your are doing & maybe you may sometimes lose some of your intended audience.

Forensic Detailing Channel I've done this method for over 10 years with the 1 bucket and rinse. Here's the reason why I've gone to multiple mits and why i will never go back to 1 mit again. !!!TIME!!! I simply can't express how much time you save by using multiple mits. There's also the fact that there will be a few heavy sticky particles that don't come off the mit easily when spraying it off with the hose. When you notice these particles on your mit, you'll have to spend extra time trying trying to pick them off with your other hand which extends your overall time. All in all you could have simply used a fresh mit for the next panel and continue washing your car instead of the 1 mit.

Well said. I use have always used the 1 bucket method rinsing the mitt with fresh tap water on a jet setting. I have never understood all the hype regarding the 2 bucket method as for sure it will not clean the mitt as effectively.

Thank you Jon great video as always :) I use 1 bucket method always , I will use two buckets when the car is very dirty then will be Wash+Wash buckets no bucket for rinse , one bucket for washing in driver side and another for passenger side , I used AF Citrus Power as prewash but I feel is very strong in LSP I think Valet pro Citrus Prewash or Powermaxed Jet wash & wax can helps to remove dirts in lower panels before start washing .

This is a great video, this is def the best way to wash a car using the 1 bucket method. Infact i will do the same , lugging about two buckets with grit guards etc doesnt guarantee grit free. I really like this method with using a hose. Ive ordered 10 of them cheap wash mitts that you have recommended to use from amazon. Ive also got a metrovac side kick filtered warm air blower that i use which works pretty well.

I've been detailing for ~10 years and I rarely use 2 buckets. I've never once put a scratch on a car or felt like I was worse off using only one bucket. Its all about technique and care of your equipment

I’m pleased to hear this. I was thinking about buying two buckets, but the price! For two blooming buckets! I think this is more up my street. Will check out your cheap Chinese wash mitts too. Your comments about women drivers, esp. alloys made me chuckle. We try our best to keep their cars in good nick, despite themselves. 👍🏻

I use the same one bucket method except I use a pressure washer with a short gun (MTM 407) and the bucket has very little to no dirt in it at the end, whereas with the two bucket method there will be much more dirt in the wash bucket. I always wash the wheels first with a separate bucket and brushes and wash mitt. I keep all wheel stuff separate to avoid contaminating the paint with metal and brake dust.

I think this method works great. I’ve always used 1 bucket and wash my mit with the hose or power washer 2 or 3 times a wash

My Grit Guard mostly just sits on a shelf these days. We share VERY similar views. I don't bother with the expensive wheel thingies! haha. - Also, I use a similar method to your one bucket, and like a couple of others have said. I use a cheap bucket with a lid (to just sit on top while I'm washing the car, keeps contaminants out). And I use multiple wash mitts, 6-8. You can save more time by NOT rinsing the mitt, and instead just discard for washing later, and replace it with another clean one. PLUS, less chance of bringing back some dirt into the soap bucket. I discovered this method myself recently, had the two buckets ready but decided to blow the mitt clean with the hose. I've never felt comfortable with dunking the mitt into a muddy rinse bucket. The bonus is I have a small can and use less water by rinsing the mitt.

Jon, I could not agree more about the two bucket method and grit guards do not guarantee that you're keeping dirty water off the clear coat. I personally use one large 3 gallon bucket, but load six to seven channel microfiber noodle type wash mitts into the bucket and let all of them soak and get happy in the wash solution. When I start my wash, I use both sides of one mitt on a panel. Once that mitt is soiled, I throw it in a separate bucket. I keep using the other six mitts until my entire car is washed, never dipping a soiled mitt back into my clean wash bucket. I even go as far as putting black wash mitts in the bottom of the bucket, since I wash my wheels, tires, exhaust tips and wheel arches as the last step after cleaning the paintwork. That way, only the black mitts will ever be used for the dirty dirty areas. I will never put a soiled mitt back in my clean shampoo solution, so the water never gets dirty. I also try the buy light colored mitts to see if there is any contamination in the mitts when I begin the wash process. At the end of the wash, I take my second bucket of dirty wash mitts and dump them in the wash machine using Chemical Guys Micro Fiber Wash. It doesn't matter if you're machine washing one mitt or ten. There is no extra work involved. Your cheap Chinese mitts would be perfect for this method, especially since you have a big bag of them. This is the fastest method and leaves no chance for cross contamination. Try it and let me know what you think! Great video as always!

I've watched about ten videos about washing a car, and this method makes most sense to me. I bought four mits, might get one more and just use the multi clothe method. It seems the easiest and most practical. The two bucket method seems time consuming. Multiple mits are not that costly.

I've done this a few times now and am very happy with it as a method. Watching the jet slice the dirt off the short pile is very satisfying. Using only a small bucket, I have noticed that the washing water stays very clean. I think this is as good as, potentially better than, the traditional two bucket method. The Hozelock multispray is an excellent tool in it's own right. Trouble is, what do I do with those two massive buckets in my garage?

Lived on a farm in the hills of Western Australia overlooking Perth, driveway was 400mtr long of gravel and mud long so imagine winter time, I always used the one bucket, garden hose method and never had swirls or scratch marks for the last thirty years, never understood fully the two bucket method, as the Forensic Detailing advised, if your mit/sponge (sponge does not leave scratches or swirls) gets dirty rinse with the garden hose then place in bucket of soap. works every time and save you time.

Brilliant video! I always wondered why there hasn’t been a video like this. I always thought that the two bucket method did not make sense as you work with dirty water. What better way than a hose with water pressure to force dirt out of the mitt (clean water too)!

This method makes a lot of sense, especially for a daily driver. I'd probably use more the multiple mitts with a single pass if working on a high end vehicle or if my paint was perfect. Another great video! And the women can't drive bit made my day! LOL

I picked up them chinese wash mitts from amazon you suggested and they arrived today. only about 1.40 each so I purchased 10 of them. They are decent quality, i see what you mean about the pile of the wash mitt, its a lot lower than my other meguiars microfibre one. look forward to trying them out.

Well I've watched the whole video now and it more than deserved the like! I agree with your method of the one bucket wash and using a hose to clean the wash mitt out, never thought of this. Personally I cannot imagine cleaning a car without snow foam, pressure washer and the two bucket method. But for somebody that dosen't want to purchase a PW this method is very good!

Takes me back to the days before I stumbled across detailing world using only one bucket. The two bucket wash is an essential part of a paintwork safe wash. Like you said after spending a few days perfecting paintwork the last thing you will want to do is a shoddy wash job! Forget rineless wash and so called "eco" detailing. P.S I had to like to take this video to 100 likes!

Hey Jon we chatted once recently about the Meguiars Express wax I have switched to the ONR one bucket wash and love it. It's winter here now in NY so I use the ONR in hot tap water in a bucket with lid to take to my customers for maintenance washing so it doesn't freeze. I am going to definitely use concentrated car wash with ONR added to it like you did. And ty for the mitt link I ordered several. More people need to listen to you in the detailing industry... Having 30 steps to weekly wash a car is just crazy to me. I always try to do a good effective wash without spending 2hours of preps+wash+putting everything back in the garage. And i also use in my rinse bucket a vertical grit (bough at my hardware store) to wash my mit properly, then wring it out. I think i am going to try your method, just because it makes it so cheap, safe, and practical. Keep up the good work my friend, plus i always laugh at your jokes, might be the british accent lol

If you are looking for a super soft brush, have a look for a Silver Tip Badger shaving brush. The hair isn't trimmed to shape like hogs hair, so each fibre tapers to a fine point. You can pick them up for less than £20.00 from China on eBay. I use an old one for washing around badges, add a tiny drop of detergent to the centre for epic and endless creamy foam.

I use a similar method already, I've been too scared to voice it up in case the two bucket warriors hated on me! With regards to the brushes i took the plunge and bought the Auto finesse hogs hair set, my only concern was the plastic sleeves tend to crack and come off easily although the the bristles are will fixed in with resin. My most recent purchase was the swissvax wooden handle type. Seems up to the job so far.

Hi mate...I been a mobile detailer for 4 years and early on I used a swiss Vax detailing brush to clean some dust from interior clear coated plastics and to my horror they scratched the surface. So I mentioned to my flatemate that I needed some softer brushes and she went out and bought me a make up kit believe it or not. It came in a roll like for tools and was bright pink. God bless her. Anyway I gave them a go and got to say they work really well. Soft as a babies bum and the hairs don't pull out as with some cheap art brushes. There are about 20 different sized brushes along with some pipe cleaning brushes which I used for inbetween the seats and console when the vacuum can't fit. I would never have thought of buying them but I'm still using them. Sure I still use the stiffer brushes for other areas, but if your looking for soft it's worth considering. Maybe "borrow" one of the wife's. Also, I use this method for my contracted weekly business customers who put 8 or so cars through a week. They don't care about micro scratches they just want the job done as quick as possible to keep costs down.

Just saw this video and i think you are thinking out of the washbox😄 i bought myself one gritguard Bucket and a gritguard and the short haired gyeon washmitt, Because i wanted that and like it. But i prefer also a pistol rinse way, instead of a second bucket. I think two or three mitts is better for wheels and dirty downsides of the car, and spray them clean intead of 2 buckets. I understand that people buy the buckets Because some products you just want to have because no reason. But i like to give it a twist like you do. Clear video for beginners!

for a brush i love the swissvax ones, there expensive but are really soft and well made.

once again I have to agree with you with the two method bucket I prefer to use the one bucket method and the hosepipe the old fashioned way my reason for saying this I just use clean water from the hosepipe to rinse the dirt off my microfiber cloth instead of using the two method bucket I find it a lot more easier and safer

I know this video is a few years old now, but i have only just this past week, sat down and thought about the 1 bucket method properly and come to the conclusion that it is safer,easier method. Been doing the 2bm for years but i have finally seen the light, but iam doing it slightly different to you on this video. 1 bucket with shampoo/water and use multiple mitts, do a panel or so then put that used mitt to one side and grab another clean fresh mitt, that way no crap goes in your bucket whatsoever, so from start ro finish your water will be 100% clean and as you mentioned in this video their is still a good chance with the 2bm to still have crud in your mitt, no matter how much squeezing and rinsing you do. No gritt guard needed, only 1 bucket to lug around and fill up, no multiple dunking etc its better in more ways than 1, wish i did it sooner. Also took a liking to snowfoaming the shampoo on the car also, aswell as in the bucket, just makes the contact wash more enjoyable and more lubricated.

one thing - I use grit guard mainly to trap dirt and prevent water from stirring in a rinse bucket. I scrub the mitt with my other hand while dunked in the rinse bucket. I very rarely scrub the mitt against the grit guard itself...

i've never really followed the set rules on washing two buckets etc etc my method and i dont claim to know it all i just prefer it lol is a pre rinse with a PW and a weak APC, bucket with grit guard (zaino bucket had it 6 yrs now i have two but never use both) warm water shampoo plus and an Adams wash pad and wash, roof, side windows, boot, bonnet half way down the doors front bumper back bumper then lower doors and sills. i'm going to get a bunch of those mitts and try your method of rinsing the mitt as its short piled your method makes sense, i'll still use my bucket with grit guard as i already purchased it and the towels etc but deffo going to give that mitt and rinse a try. I'm struggling to find a good shampoo that doesnt cost the earth and has no wax etc etc just a pure shampoo? p.s didnt know you were on Detailing Nation good to see you on there i'm Grizzle

Really like this method used it over the weekend on two cars. By the time I had used the same incredimitt on the second car it didn't seem to be performing as well in terms of picking up the suds. I am a complete beginner and I was wondering if you ever thought of doing an idiots guide to detailing specifically washing, using fallout remover and hand polishing (I don't feel confident enough using a machine polisher and don't have the time with 3 small kids :o)? I spoke with Pete in Bilt Hamber and he recommended Korrosl and Cleanser Polish but want to use these properly. I'm pretty sure I am putting small scratches on the car during washing even though I think I am being careful. Like I say a basic guide to get a really good finish washing, fallout, tar remover and polish. I have been washing and using Autoglym aqua wax up to now getting pretty good results. Also the raptor microfiber cloth seems to be out of stock on in 2 detailing and savers choice. Are the Korean ones they now sell just as good?

I'm still a 2 bucket wash guy and agree with everything you say. The 2 grit guards in rinse bucket is defo a good idea. What you could do for the ultimate safe wash if you have a pride and joy in perfect nick would be to employ all the tactics together. 2 buckets, 2 guards in one, use onr to soften the water and Also use the hose to rinse the mitt before it goes in the rinse bucket to minimise the rinse bucket dirt.

I recommend the Braun Automotive detailing brush. The same people that make the wheel woolies, check them out.

Hi Jon I'm a L plated weekend warrior but learning fast thanks to you. OK so I snowfoam and 2 bucket, why cos I bought the things including grit guards and yes I'm a dunker (but not anymore, thank you) also couldn't really get my head around the 2 bucket method other than in principle. OK so the mineral grey beemer was foamed, washed, KSE'd and Beader maker applied 10 days ago. With virtually zero miles covered since then I was able to write clean me on the rear glass owing to all the crap coming off the trees (which are not particulary close). Bit fed up at the thought of dragging all the kit out again when technically its all done. Very happy with the idea of one bucket wash with ONR, bought some on your earlier recommendation but really couldn't bring myself to try it without a pre wash (now I can try it out!). 2 questions is it good to use a rapid detailer all over after each wash and would you recommend using Beadmaker again every time after each wash?

here is what I do to get rid of the micro particles off of the mitt. I hook the loop of the wash mitt on to the back of the windscreen wash wiper and then wash the mitt with the pressure washer. I can get by with the 1 bucket method. what do others think?

I got some of the wash mitts you recommend on this video the other week... When I rub one against a CD it causes some swirl marks... Not sure whether they're bad enough that they'd cause any issues on the paint - is that anything that you've noticed when using them? Cheers!

the best method and ONLY method IMO is the 1-bucket method with 5 wash mitts. 1 for the hood and front grill and bumber, 1 for the roof, 1 for the deck lid and rear bumber, 1 for the left side of the car and 1 for the right side of the car. After you use each one, toss it to the side and move to the next mitt. If you do it this way then you are guaranteed to not transfer contaminants from the bucket back to the car. The wash water will be as clean when you are done as when you started. Those grit guards only get about 80%-90% of the contaminants from your mitt. If you are skeptical then give it a try my way and then the 2 bucket method. Your wash bucket will still have dirt and contaminants in it when your done using the 2 bucket method with those grit guards.

Jon, the spray bottles, i see over numerous videos you've got several all marked yourself, are they chemical resistant?, and what ones do you recommend yourself?

Just a quick update. I am No Fan of this method, tried it yesterday and didn't help me dunking the Lamswool mitt into the soapy bucket without rinsing. My head must of been telling me that I'm still 2 buckets! With full follow up I think it took me as long and the results weren't too pretty even after a coat of Beadmaker. Just cant help thinking I need my Polar Blast and Polar wash (which I've yet to try). Anyway what finished it (nice sunny day) took the wife out for a walk parked then she got out looked at the car and started making comments including 'waterspots' streaky windscreen thats before she got to the wheels. Commenting on brakedust behind the alloys and more dreaded waterspots. We've been married 20 years and I'm fairly new to detailing, her car went through Tesco's car wash (not anymore) and that was it. For me the works van got the car wash treatment before an earlier retirement present Beemer mineral grey. Her only detailing comment in the past was she thought Jon's voice sounded nice as it aided sleep. Her last comment was you better get the full kit out today and start again! Bollxxxs I wait until everything gets a bit cooler and dirtier first! Not sure if Beadmaker is forever for me. Definitely smooth silky touch but don't last too long and can't honestly say I think the finish is better than Meguirs Ultimate liquid wax. My next steps is to buy a DA polisher but sadly is on hold until my customers come back.

I only use 1 bucket no grit gaurd, I use about 5 wash mitts. Each one gets a section and goes in the wash. Half the buckets, half the water and zero contamination.

spent some hours watching these vids and I've got to say that this guy is amazing. usually I want to get to the point, but this guy is far from boring. keep up the excellent work. quick question. just bought a new focus st and paid 400 to have a paint protection put on. ford says I can wash and polish as normal but I'm unsure. Also doing the two bucket I've managed to scratch the bonnet slightly and worried about polishing it out with the paint protection "stuff on it. any thoughts. my car is stealth grey not metallic.

If you ordered 10 wash mitts why don't you change out the wash mitt for a fresh one after every panel rather than using 1 mitt and rinsing it out every panel.

I heard Larry from ammo NYC about a shaving brush he used. I'm about to order monza pro detailing brushes, its a set of 5. Shampoo i use is Insta finish maxi suds, foams really well and smells very good to. I have a gallon and it lasts a very long time. one pump per bucket (1 ounce). With a bilthamer washmitt for the paint and a different one for the wheels.

The Chinese mitts can you put them in the machine with like bold 2 in 1

good technique really liked it. btw your can make it bucket less by using a water gun with soap dispenser

I feel like some of those pros are a bit silly there is no reason why you couldn’t apply most of those things to the two bucket method I use the £1 buckets and cheap mitts all day long with the two bucket method and I don’t have any issues I also rinse out my mitt, just a thought

I was thinking about using multiple rag master chenille MF mitts for a one bucket wash. Put like 4 of them in the soap and ONR. Rinse off the mitts as I go and after a couple of panels, go for a new one. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

Hi John, great video mate, keep up the good work, and I for one love a long video 😉 would you use this method on your own car, I know you say the misses golf and the T5 but is it really that safe to ditch the 2 buckets. Hi John I tried this method twice now with a gtechniq microfiber wash mitt In both cases the bucket has quite a lot of dirt inside it at the end What could I be doing wrong?

What's the spray you were applying after drying?

watching your 1 bucket wash give me some idea, but what if you use 1 mitt for 1 area? that way you dont have to rinse it, when it get dirty just get another clean mitt. and drying with a towel make sense to me because it is much larger so much quicker to dry the car, but i would not wipe the water on the pain instead just dab it and laying horizontal panel with towel covering it while i work the rest of the car. last, i think your explaination make sense, good idea :)

If you want a quality detailing brush you should get wheel woolies 1.25 inch detailing brush. Graeat quality bristles , super soft and great build quality. CYC has it I think.

Hi I do not really understand why many use high gsm towels with QD, is just a waste of the product which is absorbed by the towel?
