Forest fires have complex behaviors and their combat requires the use of different tools, from hoes to aircraft. Fire fighters, either civil or military ones, need solid training to understand the singularities of fires in each Brazilian biome.
The PROMETEU Project, lea by University of Brasília (UnB), studies this combat and pays special attention to the use of chemical fire retardants in the Cerrado. This is a controversial topic because although their use may improve combat efficiency at the same time they may cause several environmental impacts. So, their use requires improvements in the training of firefighters and managers since wrong decisions could compromise the conservation of biodiversity and the sharing of its benefits.
Finally, we came to understand that firefighting in one of the many pieces in the great puzzle of Integrated Fire Management.
