Foresty nano aquascape time! I have to practice, after all, because I have a HUGE planted tank coming up and this is practice!
I don't usually do dry start tanks, but they have a lot of advantages. Your aquatic plants will grow faster, provided they are species that are able to grow emersed. This means you can start with less plant mass, which can save you some serious money! The downside is that you have to wait patiently, haha.
The fact that I found this manzanita laying is pretty cool! I got REALLY scratched up grabbing it, but it was so worth it :)

I hate that they made it so small. They were getting a lot of (deserved) hate for releasing a 2.5 gallon Betta tank and not even making a 5 gallon version too. I would have loved a 5 gallon version
@wynja77

I agree... 5 gallon is the recommended minimum, after all... I like the all inclusive setup, though, so hopefully they have or will make a tank that you can actually keep a betta in...

Me too, but, honestly, 2.5 gallons are pretty okay for big-finned bettas as long as it's planted. I have a five gallon and will only get a minimum of five gallons, but I don't go after people who use smaller tanks as long as they're planted and the person is willing to upgrade the tank if the betta isn't happy. There are 100% bettas who need a smaller tank, for several reasons. I just hope I don't ever get one because I don't like the look of small tanks 🤣 Reason why I only like short-tailed bettas. Only way to need a smaller tank is if they get a bad tumor or go blink.

I’d say a well maintained, planted, filtered 3 gallon aquarium is OKAY for an old longfinned male betta. That’s just my opinion tho…

Regardless of what you feel is the recommended volume of water for a betta, I think it's more than safe to say that a betta is much, MUCH better off in this 2.6 gallon tank than wasting its life away in a plastic cup at Petco. Personally I do think they should have had a 5 gallon option as well, but a 2.6 gallon isn't a horrible option for a betta either. As long as it's not crammed full of plastic plants and other sharp objects that could injure a betta or shred it's tail.

I got this same tank last March. I set it up for a plakat, fully planted and I must agree, just not enough swimming room for such an active betta. I ended up cutting the filter portion out to utilize the full 3.6 gallons as swimming space. With the substrate and a bit of hard scape, was only able to fill up with 3 gallons of water volume. Got it to cycle no problem, just had to closely watch it and not overfeed. Too small for a plakat in my opinion, but for those mega long finned bettas or disabled bettas, it would be perfect if one pays attention to the water quality. I did eventually break it down and move my plakat into a way larger tank. Maybe I'll set it back up just for snails. It was fun aquascaping such a small space. FLUVAL PAY ATTENTION. Make this tank in a 5 gallon cube version and I think your sales will soar overnight.

Love this review! I sadly had a betta jump out of my old desktop aquarium and instantly retired the tank (it was old and broken anyway). I was on the fence of buying this tank or the Fluval 5 Gallon Spec. I ended up going with the 5 Gallon because it was more space for the exact same price. An issue I've found is that space for the light needs to be covered for bettas because the waterline HAS to be filled up to the near the very top for the filter. I'm hoping in the next video you show how you cover that space without interfering with the light coming in.

Nice scape! Only thing I hate about a fry start is, especially in this scenario, your starting with submersed growth plants. So while doing a dry start they are converting back to emersed growth, then when flooded they melt a lot because your again having them convert back to submersed growth plants.
@hdetail

was just thinking this.. makes a dry start a little pointless to me

The only reason to ever do a dry start would be with carpeting plants. You can start with fewer plants and let them propagate throughout the tank and then flood.

That’s a really nice little tank! I started Martok out in a Topfin 2-gallon tank. But you DO need to know what you’re doing! That thing definitely kept me hustling with the frequent water changes and testing. He graduated to a 10-gallon planted mansion. Sadly, in his old age, I have had to lower the water for him and baffle the filter. He would probably appreciate the 2 gallon now 😑

It looks really good. I may try it out if i get tired of what I have now. I bought the Fluval 2.6, before it became their betta tank, 3 years ago. Still running great. I added a plastic cover over the insert. Since the light was really bright, I painted 'dappled sunlight' on both covers otherwise I was having algae issues. The anubias grow well, and have even flowered for me. I also bought the 5 gallon, which is just as nice. The only drawback is the replacement parts are a bit expensive, and only available from Fluval. I enjoy your videos immensely and your energy and enthusiasm are infectious! Go girl!

Use nylon pantyhose filled with ceramic filter balls or rings as cover-ups for unsightly egg cartons, then cover that with your substrate. Serves dual purpose and saves on that pricey substrate. Sponsor or not, that stuff is like aqua gold! It builds interest to the floor of your aquarium too.

Are usually don’t like small tanks but it does give you a chance to do aqua skipping without having to spend every penny you have. I’ve always wanted to do a 300 gallon Aquascape tank but that’s the price of a car, I might try something like this, it looks good and it’s fun but it’s not huge so you can get the good stuff without worrying so much about budget. The price on these always seem a little expensive but when you get a good one like the flu or you’ve got a light that works on a filter that works and it’s just easier and they look good. You could just buy a little 5 gallon cheap tank but it’s always gonna look like a cheap tank. A lot of these smaller kit tanks look pretty good

Though I agree that 2.5 gallons is enough for knowledgeable dedicated fish keepers, for general public, most people who go to big box store and get a fish and tank where these are sold, it is false advertising and dangerous. Most people see Betta and put their fish in it and never do enough to keep it clean. Looks good though. I might have to get my betta a new tank and do something similar.
