Hi, Dansky! Thanks for the tip. I didn't know the shift shortcut for this purpose. By the way, this video reminded me that since the last stream, I've been wanting to give you a tip about the curvature pen tool. While building the path, whenever I want a curved point, I click once; when I want a fixed point, I double-click. I think my method can save a few seconds in the workflow. Hope I helped you too.

Beyond making blob shapes, I don’t really use the curvature tool for anything. It’s good for beginners. But once you understand how to use the pen tool in combination with anchor point placement and handle manipulation, the curvature tool just becomes annoying. I often see people trying to force the curvature tool to make a specific curve by adding way too many anchor points and it makes me cringe.

I think of it as a problem of understanding how to use a tool and not that one tool is better than another. With all the steps and adjustments it took, this method isn't much quicker than using the pen tool if you know how it use it properly. One thing it does though, is make it less likely to mess up your curve, which is tough for beginners.

I remembered when the curve tool first came out. I was so over joyed. I love the pen tool classic when it's clearly defined stuff. But even still, I use the reshaper tool rather than using the bessier handles until when it's time to refine

Crazy. I’ve been using illustrator since v1 and never knew about this tool. Also never used the Smoothing command, just Simplify when trying to smooth paths…. Duh. All of these Adobe apps have so many tools and features that a person can do things in different ways and feel they are working efficiently, and then one day discover there has been a much better way all along. I’m sorta hoping this Curves tool was only recently added to Illustrator, in a late update, so I won’t feel quite as bad.

I used to do the same thing with the pen tool. I used to go around all the curves and then adjust the handles. I had no idea there was a curve tool LOL.

This technique is great in some cases. But mostly with these kind of simples icons to vectorize, I use the automatic tool and adjust a bit after

Just drag the line between points. This will make a new point and keep dragging that new point to a new location which will make the curveture just as you want.

Curvature Tool is nice but it's not 100% accurate. In the last example of flames we can see the traced vector is slightly modified as compared to the source. Also wen cant try the Smooth Tool to fix jagged edges in a shape.

You are building image files in Photoshop, and vectors in Illustrator. I learned AI first, it is still easiest to me. And I’ve never learned Light Room at all. My instructor told me when you are working pretty equally and putting those into InDesign- that’s when you got it. 😊

The alt click technique is kinda a waste of time, you can just double click on a point to make it round or straight, so it works kinda like double click a the start of a curve, one click in the middle and double click at the end, no need to come back later and set the middle point to rounded

Some will find the alt technique easier to understand, and can then stop using it once they become more familiar with the tool 👍
