This forge is inexpensive (less than $200 of materials) and extremely versatile. I have used it quite a bit and have very pleased with results. This video is intended to give you the big picture / concept so you can build a version of it for yourself. I have included details about materials below - but please understand that every forge is different and you will need to adapt this concept to fit your burner, bricks, fuels system, etc. If you are the type of person who is ambitious enough to build a forge I'm sure you will be able to figure this out!
MATERIALS I USED:
Fire Brick bit.ly/2Caj9ci
Propane Burner ebay.to/2TAgJh9
2x2x1/8 Angle Iron - Local Metal Yard
3/16 x 1 1/4 Flat Bar - Local Metal Yard
7/16 All Thread with Nuts and Washers amzn.to/2UrvJLE
CUTS AND OTHER DETAILS:
All holes are drilled 1/2" diameter
2x2x1/8 ANGLE IRON CUTS:
2 pcs @ 24" (holes at 1", 13", 23"... one left one right)
4 pcs @ 9" (no holes) - if you want the hearth make 2 of these 18-1/2"
3/16" x 1-1/4" FLAT BAR CUTS:
2pcs @ 11-1/2" (holes at 5/8" , 10-3/4")
ALL THREAD CUTS:
4 pcs @ 12" and 2- 7/16" x 1" bolts (If you are building with the plate top and hearth you will need to make these longer!)
Having a plate on top is extremely useful and I highly recommend it. Drill the holes in your plate to accept the all thread.
Yeah, I know these instructions are a little rough - but you will get it!

I am an electrician (read: amateur accidental welder), and I have recently jumped into metal working. Up to now, my forge has been a bunch of sand in my wheelbarrow with a pipe sticking in the bottom and my wife's hair dryer blowing into it. I am getting a little bit better, and I think the time has come to build myself a proper forge. In other words, I'm getting ready to build this one. Thank you for making this information so easy to absorb, and for helping keep the trades alive!

For anyone building this, there is one piece missing from the cut list in the description - you need 5, not 4, 9" 2x2x1/8 angle lengths, and the 5th needs holes drilled 1" from either end. It's mentioned in the video, but not in the cut list. Also, having built one, I'm now disassembling to add a piece of all thread to connect the two 24" angle iron pieces at the fire brick end. I move mine a fair amount, and occasionally found the pieces could slide around a little with that end unsecured. Have to add, this is, in fact, as simple as it sounds to make. Great design, and using my local metal supplier, was able to build (with burner) for $140.

Just getting into construction/ carpentry right now in my life (I'm 26). The company I'm with is putting me and fellow workers through carpentry school. Never thought in my life that I'd work construction, but I've found that I love working with my hands and I love seeing the results of my work, as it is very rewarding! I would love to start blacksmithing as well, as I've always admired the craft and art of it. From what I take from your videos, it sounds like it's with reach of doing so! Just want to say how thankful and glad I am that I have found your channel. It's very encouraging and inspiring, not just on being a craftsman, but being a man. Wish I had a dad like you growing up! Time for me to be that kind of man to my soon to be kid! Thanks Scott!

I just inherited my great Scottish American Grandpa's anvil (whom he probably inherited from his own dad) that he used to help build Benson, MN. I was blown away learning about all he did as a blacksmith back in the day. It was like he was the backbone for nearly everything during that time. I've always had a strong desire to get into blacksmithing and I really want to make my folk proud so Im soaking up everything I can so in time I can have a respectable shop and accompanying skills.

Holy moly! This. Is. Perfect! I live in Japan and we generally do not have a lot of space. Especially compared to the US!!! If you think you have a tiny garden, but it’s still bigger than 3 by 5 meters (sorry, I am German and have no clue about inches or feet), consider yourself blessed! Because I have even less space but I am still super interested in blacksmithing. I even got a 115kg anvil in my yard. However I am lacking a proper forge. But thanks to this video I now have a pretty good idea on what I could build that would fit my needs and not take up all my space. So, once again, thank you!!! Very cool and helpful video. Love your channel! ❤️🛠⚒🔨🔧❤️

I have been ‘thinking’ about blacksmithing as a hobby for near on 25 years, and have been put off by the cost shown in some blacksmith videos. This however has shown me that for just a few pounds I can make my own forge and learn this ancient art. I’m 53 and have been employed most of my working life in I.T. so by having a non computer based hobby I feel will bring me so much pleasure and satisfaction, plus if I mess up just fire it again and give it more whacks!. Now, what else can I watch!!!!

There are many videos on how to make a basic coal forge, but this is the best I see for a cheap starter gas forge. I just sent this video to my cousin and we are about to build a new workshop for my backyard as life has me staying in this house a few more years than I was expecting. This will be a great addition and I am done waiting on the right time to start blacksmithing. I started in metal trades as a teenager before moving to other types of construction. There is nothing better than forging metal and seeing that glowing weld. Now its back to basics for me and picking up where I left off 25 years ago. Thank you so much for this video and parts list.

After watching this, blacksmithing seems less daunting than woodworking now that I've gotten into woodworking. Woodworking is harder than it looks, perhaps blacksmithing is easier than it looks, at least because it seems like some impossible thing to get into, but it honestly doesn't seem much different than woodworking for difficulty after watching this. I also want to say that this is such an honorable thing to do, making an accessible, easy-to-build forge.

There are three crafts I'm working toward mastering, Woodworking, leather working, and Blacksmithing. My grandfather did all three, not only was he able to make alot of what his family needed on the homestead (thereby saving money) but he also sold much of what he made. He wasn't filthy rich, but the skill in his hands ensured his family never went without.

I've made several propane forges, one from an old Freon tank and the other from a 3-4 gallon compressor tank. The burner is ultra simple. You, of course, need the plumbing to go from the gas line to gas pipe. A T joint (with the gas coming in from the bottom) and forced air from one side. The other side slides into the forge body. A ball valve controls the gas and a ball valve controls the incoming air. No need for expensive needle valves, mig tips, etc. I can easily forge weld with this setup. Thanks, Scott, for this tutorial.

Love it. Been blacksmithing since I was 15. Looking to change from my coal forge to propane and this looks like a good one to make.

This video is inspiring. I was just going to make a foundry but been watching a lot of forge related videos and now want to build a furnace that I can use for both a forge and a foundry. This gives me a lot of good ideas as I lack both a quality welder and the skill to make something decent with the freebie HF one I have. One plus is I already have an anvil, name is too worn to identify but it is old and was my grandpas.

Coming from someone with machinist experience, this was an excellent video to watch, and only makes me want to get back into making things. I definitely have a continued interest in blacksmithing as well.

Thank you for posting this (and of course all your other videos). I've thoroughly enjoyed all your videos and other than waiting to move onto some land for a real workshop, I look forward to building a forge like this to start out. Cheers!

Scott, you are so awesome. Thank you for this video. I’ve been wanted to do something like this for awhile now. Well, since I’ve been watching your videos, ( a few years now ). I will start collecting the parts and build this when I can. I’ll take some videos myself. 🙂

This is serendipitously timed. I had just recently commented on your Facebook post about how I started blacksmithing when I was 12, shoeing horses at 17, and then I built myself a very similar (albeit heavier and longer) forced air forge when I was 21.

A couple of years ago I built and have been playing with the forge that the King of Random made in one of his videos. It has served me well, but I can already see many advantages your forge offers that I just can't get out of a bucket of fire. I'll be building one of yours as soon as I can gather the materials. Thank you, sir.
