"Forged Down Under" is filmed in Queensland, Australia, at the Savage Custom Creative workshop. Savage Custom Creative specializes in knife making and blacksmithing classes. Our goal is to get as many people interested in and participating in our hobby.
"Forged Down Under" was created to showcase the Australian talent we have in the knife making and blacksmithing community and hopefully get more people interested in our hobby! We also aim to make the industry more friendly, as we're all here to help each other.
Each episode is split into two videos - Part 1 & Part 2. Each episode has a theme and is made up of 3 rounds. Contestants receive a challenge that they must start in round 1 and finish in round 2. Each round is judged based on a rubric and the final score from both round 1 & 2 combined, will decide who moves on to round 3, where they will get a new and more advanced challenge. The winner of round 3 will become a "Forged Down Under" champion.
"Forged Down Under" is unique, as we only give the contestants a theme to follow, and the creativity of how they interpret the theme is wholly up to them. This creates a much more fluid and entertaining approach. Sometimes, giving fewer guidelines is better, as contestants have to battle the urge to overcomplicate the build in a time-constrained environment.
Our judging is also different. We judge the contestants on a rubric for Round 1, based on three categories, with a 1-5 points scale per category, per judge. Then, in Round 2, we judge them on a more complex rubric of five categories. This gives the contestants who think about their approach a more strategic path. If you're smart, you can guarantee high points in a couple of categories or maybe aim for an average across all categories.
We hope you enjoy our show, "Forged Down Under"!

Two awesome builds and another great episode. Well done to all. Would love to see what that Damascus cap looks like. I know what it did to the forge. "Forges are consumable!" In the next episode: "You have 8 hours to rebuild a forge"

Great video guys! Wonderful and creative blacksmithing from both contestants. I continue to appreciate following the process in detail during the builds. Oh and "It will dig" was hilarious--thanks for that bit!

It was great to watch! I'm so impressed in what they both do in the short amount of time and under the time pressure. It's one thing sitting at home knowing everything that could have been done and a other to be there doing it😀

Cracker episode guys. I really enjoy the contestants explaining why they're doing certain things and how it works (for example Mike explaining borax and damascus patterns). I agree Patrik's design deserved the win but Mike is such an awesome, humble bloke that he should get a consolation prize. Shout him a carton of beers or something yeah? And hope you keep making these!

I actually do use a spade and a shovel, and yes, hitting the pommel is a thing. Who would put a sharp metal bit on the end?!?

Moving parts can fail, and the top of the handle could harm the user. I wouldnt have scored that highly on the second shovel

It only costs $100 to redo the refractory every 12 months or so. It costs almost that in steel and gas for every billet of pattern weld??? I don’t think you understand the concept.
