Obanai's sheath in the anime is actually leather and almost the same design as you zipped one, except, it is closed by weak magnets instead of zips. weak magnets so that it is not tightly closed and can unfurl and open to allow him to instantly take his sword out.

I forge and always dream of forging a katana but I don't have the tools to make one, and I only have a tiny shed to do my black smithing, but it doesn't stop me from making miniature katanas from nails. And you don't need all the fancy tools to make something amazing.
