In a 40-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, to launch his book ‘West Asia at War: Repression, Resistance and Great Power Games’, Talmiz Ahmad says that Arab states are often violent because they are weak. They lack the support of their people, which is why they are tyrannies.
Talmiz Ahmad, who has twice served as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and also as Ambassador to Oman and UAE and is presently the Ram Sathe Professor of International Studies at Symbiosis University in Pune, says: “After a hundred years, not a single Arab state provides for any modicum of popular participation in state decision-making. National financial accounts remain non-transparent and without accountability. Though oil wealth is depleting, its revenues are still used to back state efforts at co-option and coercion - the latter now becoming more open, more crude, more vicious … and more frequent.”

There were quite a few times when I wanted to hear what you were saying, but Mr. Thapar had to cut in without letting you finish the sentence seemingly because some other question had occurred to him . But as usual this weasel Thappar gets into Modi bashing mode and starts driving the interview to score points for his point of view. 1. Looks like Karan suddenly found that Modi's India is perhaps a haven compared to Arabic countries. Hope he spend more of his time till 2024 on exploring and exposing Arabic monarchies. But he would have to do a thorough job and it is not as easy as just blaming Modi for everything that happens in India. 2. As from India, we should look to have good relation with these countries and not meddle in their internal affairs. Leave that to the Americans and the Europe. 3. Talmeez is a seasoned ex-diplomat who know Arabic world like palm of his hand. Very articulate and balanced person. Book is certainly worth reading.

I think the main difference between PRC and India is that in India there is a view conflict between the regime and Muslims because they are Muslim. In PRC the conflict between the regime and Uyghurs is more because of Turkish nationalism/separatism as opposed to Uyghurs being Muslim especially when there are other ethnic groups in PRC that are Muslims that have no issues with the regime (Huis for example). Gulf states are Arab and if being Muslim is not the issue in the PRC-Uyghurs conflict and being Turkish is, they most likely really do not care about it. Now, Turkey and the Central Asian Turkish states would care and that has been an issue the PRC has to to deal with.

Its not about *oil running out* in 20 or 50 years. The crisis is when demand for oil falls. It can be 5 to 10 years. Reason ? - The development of alternative energy like solar, wind, hydrogen , nuclear etc. All these are racing ahead fast to make better efficient systems. Battery technology is having breakthrough potentials that will trigger massive shift from oil ,, from automobiles to aviation to shipping to industries. Oil demand will fall dramatically in ten years. On top of it, at that time environmental pressure groups will pressure western governments to change over to sustainable energy.

Alternate energy is only complementary. Do not bet on oil being not in demand. It will be stable. So many people need to buy cars in poorer nations including India. So much infrastructure needs to be built. All takes oil. Trucks need oil. Battery trucks are long way and there is not enough space for trucks to stop by and charge, not is their electrical infrastructure to charge trucks. Even Tesla super charger takes 30 to 45 minutes with high ampere wiring. Truck will need a small power plant.

@planeteuropa
@planeteuropa 2 жыл бұрын
@@keerthisureshseelam The global supply of oil is in surplus.. there is a logistics problem now due to the Ukraine war. China, the biggest importer is fast moving to renewable energy and electric vehicles. Hydrogen is the future and as it stands now, its production costs are falling due to breakthrough technology evolving. Australia is already exporting Hydrogen made by solar energy and is seen as a major energy power. Sulphur batteries will replace lithium at one third the cost and fast charging times. When all these factors emerge into maturity, the developed western nations will be prone to impose agressive Carbon border tax on other nations that use fossil fuels to make products. The "climate change" noise will become louder. All these will cause a fall in demand for oil, causing even oil producers to cut production to evade punitive carbon taxes. Already Saudi, UAE, Iran are all investing big in renewable energy sources. India is going into Hydrogen in a big way with Ambani, Adani ,Tatas plan to invest 70 billion plus in hydrogen production. The government has put in a production target of 5 million tons by 2027. Therefore there will be a FALL in demand for oil.

The success of the city and country during the pandemic, is a study in leadership. They had an incredible immunisation program and well defined rules which allowed the economy and society to open up faster than almost anywhere else in the world. I understand that Karan has an opinion, which is quite human, I also understand that he wants to extract some truth (as per his opinion) from a reluctant guest, and I also understand that the government's stand on treatment of all Muslims by the government has to be questioned and strongly questioned, however he goes along that interrogation for too long and it loses its way from extracting the truth to forcing a specific statement from the guest, which IMO is really wrong.
