@Minty.Fresh.Tunes.
@Minty.Fresh.Tunes. 3 жыл бұрын
Alright so I watched a video where if you take modern high carbon steel it already has a homogeneous distribution of carbon and when you heat this up there are some impurities that are created on the surface - you can see him trying to remove these impurities with the auto belt sander but they are never completely removed as they are also below the surface. Over the course of heating this metal and cooling it many times the impurities build and the metal actually becomes WEAKER than it would be if it were not heated so many times. So the added strength of folding it is offset by this to the point where it is weaker than it would be if just left alone as stock due to the already homogeneous distribution of the carbon. (A long time ago folding was necessary due to the uneven distribution of carbon in steel blades that were not folded - they would break on the weak spots where there was not as much carbon. So they folded it to mix the carbon in with the rest of the steel and spread it out so there were no weak spots in the blade. This is not necessary today as we have much better steel.)

Now this is my idea of reality TV. I wish I could see you up on the big screen in theater near me! Beautiful job! I have always wondered though, at 10:40-11:00 what is the substance that you put the billet into and its purpose please? Thanks and I look forward to seeing your movies on the silver screen.
@superiorrain9412

@Tim Barter Sr. That substance is called borax, its used to prevent oxidation of the forge welds. So that the welds stay clean.
