This is my First blacksmithing project so if I can do it you can make them too! In total, I used about 300mm of 25mm x 6 mm mild steel flat bar for the forged tongs and about 800mm of the same material for the "stupid" simple ones. Which can be reused for forging new tongs.
For a step by step tutorial please check out John's video: • Introduction to tong m...

The old blacksmithing dilemma: to make tongs, you gotta first make tong-making tongs

That simple twist is brilliant, wish I thought of that when I started! Took me at least 3 attempts to get something that worked, ugly as sin but useable enough to make something better! Most beginner smiths try tongs first, silly but if you have none its the first thing you need!

steel parts you don't want heating up while in the forge, use a tool to brush water over the surface. In japanese blacksmithing a "tebori" is used, its a strongly compressed bundle of straw that's been soaked in water. or use a ladle

Those “ugly” tongs are great… low maintenance, no fussing, work great, don’t talk back to you. It’s the “pretty” tongs you need to watch out for... always needing oil, high maintenance, “keep the rust off me”, always bitching. Oh, sorry, we were talking about tongs - got carried away. Great work! Love the spartan forge area. How heavy is your anvil? I love the dull thud when you hammer on it, sounds dense and heavy. Thanks for sharing the video. You do really good work (that I can mimic when I get my forge set up someday 🙂)
@Ollaris
@Ollaris 5 жыл бұрын

Ollari's Thanks for the reply! Anvils are damn expensive here in the USA. I’ve been searching for an affordable one for years, but no luck. I was given a piece of railroad track (from my awesome neighbor who’s a welder) that’s about 40 kilos (80 lbs or so), but I still need to form it into an anvil. It’ll have to do for now. Thanks for sharing your videos, I find them very informative & funny!
@Ollaris
@Ollaris 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, same here! They ask for 3-5$ / kg . I’ve been searching for the past couple of years for something like this. Railroad tracks are nice and affordable especially with that weight what you have!

Awesome job! But most blacksmiths leave the stock a little longer and don’t cut it to size until the very end, so that way they don’t need to hold the piece they are working on with tongs hehe or you can simply weld a rod to the end of it to use a handle and not burn your hand, and then cut it off when you are done forging ;) but your final product is beautiful. Keep up making great things. And love your forge btw.
