I'm no blacksmith but if you can get hardened steel red hot, you can forge it! After 20 minutes or so I got my file glowing red hot with my new home made rocket stove. That means you can hammer on it and shape it into a knife or whatever you need. That, my friends is awesome. I used no added air supply to achieve this. That means you can too! Get to it blacksmiths! I plan to.

That's a nice stove may i suggest putting another few feet of chimney on top of what you got. You will get more draft and the file will get hotter quicker :)

I did some basic forging last week with mine. Same sort of stove, perhaps a little smaller. I used a heat gun for some extra poke, made a lot of difference. But channel locks (pump pliers to me) are crap tongs to forge with. I just dropped my bit of steel vertically down the chimney.

Dude thats awesome! iv learned basic blacksmithing for 2 years, and have to say thats not red hot thats yellow hot which is hotter than red and is the colour you need to forge metal. great work love it. have you got any more video's of these ?

Cool! But word of caution, if anyone actually is thinking about getting this hotter through various means, Do Not use regular cement in the mix, it retains water in it which at really high temp can cause the thing to basically explode!

truggeri This is late and I hope I can still get a reply, but would straight up refractory cement work?

I bet a rocket stove the size of a 55 gallon steel drum can help with swordsmithing.

I would use 10-60% grog with clay, but very impressive.

is your fuel just wood? Or is there some coal in there too?

Coming from someone who actually is a blacksmith, I have to tell you that taking 20 minutes to come up to heat is far too slow for doing any real blacksmithing. In a forced air coal forge running normally, that sized piece of steel might take 20 seconds to come up to forging heat. A rocket stove is designed to put it's heat out of the top, not out of it's fueling point.

No tendrá suficiente temperatura como para calda, pero si para la forja. Es una buena idea ecológica.

Scott Rich I've seen a video clip that shows the tip of a 1"(?) bar glow cherry red after 30 seconds in the chimney of a standard rocket stove.

Keith Olson You know Keith, I cannot get a 1" square or round steel bar to cherry red in 30 seconds with either my coal forge running full out or my propane forge in full out, so I hope you will forgive me for calling bullshit on your "video".

+Scott Rich there are a lot of rocket stove designs. people have tweaked out some pretty amazing stuff. i would love to see a j tube rocket stove designed to have rams horns and perhaps even a bellows...i don't doubt its ability to turn iron ore to iron. this rocket stove is a far cry from something extremely experienced rs builders could make. i've heard of them getting to the multiple thousands deg F

how's that a rocket stove? It's a stove without a chimney

got it - it has an insulated combustion chamber. Doesn't need to be fed like a rocket stove mass heater. Btw Forge it or it didn't happen. Forge! Forge!
