Forging the [Coiled Sword] - Dark Souls 3

This week Aleksey forges the coiled sword from Dark Soul 3. Along the way he demonstrates a lot of classical blacksmithing techniques and shares some tips and tricks with us that we may not normally use during bladesmithing. He shows how to texture using special dies on the power hammer, how to use an air powered chisel to increase efficiency and much much more. This a great blacksmithing project to create the coiled sword and gives us a break from the standard grind of a bladesmithing project. Hopefully soon we will be making something from Elden Ring!

It definitely makes a huge difference in some instances. Every time I see another channel male a so-called "Damascus" blade (it's actually just pattern welded, but that's a whole other rant,) they do the lazy thing and plasma cut the tip to shape. It sucks because then the pattern in the metal just continues right off the tip of the knife. When you forge the tip the pattern of the metal actually curves with the tip the way it's supposed to. Ilya, unsurprisingly, is the master of this sort of thing.

I dunno if it would be possible with swords, but the machine shop I work at does a lot of work with stainless steel. When you heat treat stainless to 900F using the H900 heat treating method, it turns a beautiful golden bronze color. We only get it up to 43-46 on the Rockwell scale though, and I believe swords have to be a lot harder than that. Still be cool to see a sword made from stainless and heat treated that way though, even if it would be a wall hanger.

Surprisingly not accurate. The Coiled swords edge isnt blunt, just twisted around. The blade would actually be MORE dangerous then your standard blade simply due to the particulars of parrying. With that design, a bladed parry would result more then likely in your blade twisting out of your hand and the Coiled sword slicing happily into your forearm. Edit: with a solid sheild, this would cease to be an issue, but even then actually blocking with a shield is like to shatter your arm.

I’d be more interested in Ornstein’s spear than Alonne’s sword : I’d wager both would be difficult to create given the details on the first one and the absurd length and thinness of the other, but precisely because of all those intricate details on the spear compared to merely the technical difficulty of forging such a sword, I’d prefer seeing them try their hand at the spear. Or they can try creating Gwyn’s sword, good luck even lifting it up the ground XD

@nathanjensen7825 3 жыл бұрын
@@nathanjora7627 True that Ornstiens Spear would be a real fun build but the Alonne sword would actually be an excellent opportunity for another of the historical builds as it's basically a traditional nagamaki with very few fantasy elements. I actually commented on a previous historical build that I would like to see one on that particular type of blade so I see that one as a win-win

@@nathanjensen7825 Well, I’m not an expert, or even a buff, but searching for historical analogies for Alonne’s sword I couldn’t even come close to finding a sword that thin and that long. I could find pretty long sword, but not nearly as much of both. Hell, even normal katanas seem thicker (in both depth and the... dimension perpendicular to length, the word escapes me for now) So I don’t know about the « historical » part. Honestly, the sword he has in game looks like it’d bend or snap at the first strike :|

@@antonior4220 It makes you wonder who they consult for history - because either they do that or have some artists who consult historical artwork themselves. While their "grounded" swords aren't super accurate, their grounded armor seems to have a lot of thought put behind it compared to many franchises. Comparing their original Fluted set to the lame redone version by Bluepoint is probably the best example I can come up with.
