Wow, this damascus gives off a really stunning pattern, and the rounded profile definitely brings that out. Simply a stunning ring.

Hi, Before putting the ring in the acid, can you coat the internal surface of the ring with wax or some other substance which prevent itching on the internal surface of the ring... It will look absolutely stunning as you will get two different beautiful surfaces...

Yeah you can. You can coat it with nail polish which protects it and the acid won’t eat through. Most people use ferric chloride though for Damascus rather than this etchant used here.

sounds like a good idea, just stain it red before you do the the final sanding of the raised parts, then only the low parts stay stained ;)

kinda looks like a snakes belly scales, its really neat. I find it amazing how just before you etched it in the acid it looked so mirror like, if you showed that to someone who didn't know what material it was then they'd probably say silver, the shear thought that that was actually 2 different types of steel is mind blowing. great job

I absolutely love Damascus steel and the patterns and designs it makes, especially when you then etch it with acid. I just watched this video and the first thing I thought of was the Iron Spider suit or even Iron Man's armour with the lines and curves! I doubt there is any way to pull it off but if there is, I think you could make a killer ring. Red glow powder inside this steel and do the same steps, I wonder if the glow powder would show up inside the darker, flat edges allowing this to pop? I love the look, even has a Venom type look. Either way, this was yet another awesome ring. Keep up the great work!

Just an idea for the look here, flame anodizing? Itd be pretty sweet. Also if you could find a way to get the lower grooves reflective and have the raised ridges with the matte finish

Have you thought about doing the obsidian shape with the symphograph steel? It might give you interesting patterns in acid. You could also take the round you did here with that same steel. More less you’d be doing everything the same but in the center you could add stuff like your glow rings. That way you have another way to combine the designs with the glow. It will take longer and the process won’t be exactly the same as you did in this video but it will give you a more complex ring if that’s what you want.

I was thinking, would it be possible to dip it in a solid color resins or something to fill in the trenches? That way you have a layer of color too. If you could pull it off that would be awesome ring. It would look similar to stained glass in church’s with the colors and the boarders.

Holy crap that looks amaizing! It has some Stargate: Atlantis vibe to it. What if you did a san mai of damascus? Like 2 sides being mainly lighter metals and middle mainly darker metals? Or more than 3 layers, it could make a cool effect if its made into a ring.

Awesome ring but for some reason i think the inside gonna itch the skin and put mark on it if someone wear it for long time. Now the fix would be to add tranpernt layer on it so the cool marks from the inside be showen yet the glass or plastic layer protect the skin.

i wonder if you were to save all your cuttings from the lathe and melt all the different materials in a crucible, Just what kind of madness you could work with then. It would be tricky to do because different materials behave differently at different temperatures but you might be left with something cool.
