one nice trick about anvils is that you want them to be really bounce a hammer back up when you hit them. you'll get 2x as much force out of each blow of your hammer if the anvil pushes back up into the piece instead of absorbing the blow. you may want to consider doing some loosely held hammer strikes and seeing if the head of the hammer bounces back up almost to where you dropped it from. your arms will thank you in the future!

@@wayoutwest-workshopstuff6299 Yep, this is called "rebound" if you want to look it up. Another way to check is to drop a steel ball bearing on it and see if it bounces back up almost to where you dropped it from.

Hello Tim, student blacksmith here. You dont have to fully dry you charcoal or any coal for that matter. In fact I always keep the coals on the outside damp an neatly packed. I sprinkle water on them to keep the fire contained. It's also important that you keep a fair amount of coal on the side of the forge. This way when the coals in the middle burns away you push the wet/damp coals to the middle and put some new ones on the outside. I hope this explanation makes sense. If not I would be happy to explain it in a different/maybe more clear way.

That, good sir, is (probably) not an anvil. It is shaped like an anvil but likely made of low grade cast iron. It is an anvil-shaped object. I predict that the edges will chip out when you start using it. You can make a perfectly serviceable post anvil. Just a few inches of nice square hard steel edge is all that most of us need. The horn is nice but rarely used. You need 2 in of edge, 5-10 square inches of flat space, and a hardy hole for tooling.

I've used charcoal for nearly all of my forging, for what it's worth my 0.02, I'd advise do be quite liberal with how much char you use, just like a coal forge where coal on the periphery of the fire will turn to coke with the waste heat, char on the edges will dry nicely and this helps keep the fire consistant Always love hearing when people notice and get personal experience with just how much better a charcoal forge smells :) if you use hardwoods like maple and hickory it can smell very pleasant and pine has its own charm Cheers!

As you advance you will note copious sparks as you hit the steel. You will also have hot scale about. It’s quite a fire hazard. You may need to Hoover up all the bits of straw and sawdust around the fire pot. Wearing cotton clothing is supposed to be better than synthetic stuff in event of conflagration.

On a semi-related note, have you considered an old 2-stroke hot-bulb engine for your loco? I was just at our local A & P show, and some enthusiasts had row of wee(-ish) ones going. They have at least 80 per cent of the romance of steam, but without having to buggerize about with boiler regs. These ones all had PTOs with a flat-belt, and of course you don't need a reverse gear since they run in either direction. Horribly inefficient but they'll chug along on just about anything including (apparently) waste oil straight from the chippy and even wood creosote. Surely there must still be a good few of these lurking about Ireland (or elsewhere in the EU)? Indeed they're so mechanically simple that you could just about knock one up in your workshop. Just a thought...
