Fished out this old .049 cox engine and wanted to see if it worked or not.

Wow. Amazing little engine started right up! So many memories of us boys in the neighborhood with control line planes and these little engines spitting castor oil all over us. Wonderful sounds, wonderful smells!

Lovely 0.49 ... Undestru table... Little machine in Colombia when I was young has a lot of fun with a little U control line and free fly balsa models

They are little screamers! They took a lot of abuse and never disappointed the generation growing up with them! Thanks for your comment Walter...

The plucky .049 engine. I brazed a dome onto a piston. She ran tough for 2 minutes before melting the solder. I had the Baja Bug and the Stuka dive bomber. Never got the hang of U-Line Controller. Crashed thrice.

The history of Cox engines is quite interesting. And it put a vast number of these things within reach of a lot of young folks with a small budget. That crankcase that is an extrusion was a big key to lowering cost. They had made cast ones, but they cost more to make and a number of the castings had flaws and had to be scrapped. I've known a number of women who wore very fetching perfume, but no perfume quite so good as the smell of the model airplane nitro fuel.

Not wrong there Charles, the smell of nitro fuel sure does put a smile on ones face!! Thanks for the history too, cheers...

Wow, thanks for this. It brought back some memories. The last time I can remember seeing one of these powering active flight, was in Texas in the mid 1980s. This video is odd to me, for two reasons. First, because it inexplicably showed up in my "feed"of recommended videos, today. I'm not a subscriber, and your channel only has 439 subs. Secondly, because (and correct me if I'm wrong), you seem to have a British accent. Which in and of itself is NOT "odd" to me. What IS odd, is that the model airplane that engine was mounted in, the last time I saw it in use back in the 80s, was a British Spitfire. Lil weird. Lol
@chich7089

Aussie accent here! That Spitfire plane you just described was the very first control line plane I had, fond memories they were way back in the late "70s early "80's. Thanks for you comment...

@@chich7089 Thanks for your reply, and the clarification on your accent! So your first plane powred by this awesome little engine was a Spitfire!? What are the fing odds of that? Some twilight zone 💩 right there. Well, you just hit 440 subs. I WAS just looking at videos a couple days ago on boomerangs. So maybe that had something to do with it...😄

@@chich7089 Mystery solved on the feed recommendation. I watched your bug zapper mod a couple of days ago. Just finished mine. Decided to use an old taser I had laying around. Dumped everything besides the grids, and the racket handle. Rewired it using house electrical wiring. Its brutal.

That looks like a spring starter from a Wen Mac engine
@chich7089
@chich7089 6 жыл бұрын
David McIntire, you're right, the original spring starter was put on another engine so I had to fit this one on, works fine though. The only problem is that the spring rubs onto the plastic hub after the engine starts.

I noticed the same drag with the starter on my Wen Mac too. A bit of a design flaw in my opinion. You might want to check out my channel. I have over 1000 original glow engine videos.

Castor oil is was the typically oil mixed in, still is in some cases, and sometimes mixed with synthetic oil, and some has only synthetic oil. The castor oil especially can get bad and a bit gummy with time.
