Forgotten Football Grounds | The Dell
Tonight I bring you another forgotten Football Ground video, this time it is The Dell, Southamptons old ground between 1898-2001.

Spent many Saturdays at the Dell in 1989/90 whenever I visited my now wife while she was at University. Witnessed many Matt Le Tissier masterclasses, and the odd Alan Shearer one too. Fabulous ground!!

I really liked The Dell. On its day there was a brilliant atmosphere down there. The uniqueness of the old grounds is what made them home! No two grounds were alike.

Thanks for this video - I also spent several afternoons at the Dell in the 1950s. have been a Saints supporter ever since. For what it's worth (not much) I also successfully completed my driving test outside the Dell in 1958!.

Common theme in these stories is the building of housing on the old sites. Nice touch that they named some of these ones after old players.

Some do but others have ASDA or Tesco built on top of them.

As a Spurs fan who saw us play at the Dell on many occasions, it's amazing how little the Archers Road end changed over the years.

That is a long time to be supporting a club.

Us and Pompey werent arch rivals back then. It was actually common for fans of either club to travel to either teams matches in support. So playing at fratton wouldnt of been an issue. The Dell itself was a catch 22. It was intimidating to opposing teams as the players were practically in the crowd, there was a tiny sliver of grass for throw ins, if you stood in that, the crowd could put their arms around your shoulders. But , on the flip side, when seating became required the capacity dropped so much it was hampering our budget. We struggled after first moving to the new stadium St Mary's. If I'm honest it still doesn't feel like home like the dell did. Its too identikit for a start, bland nd depressing around it. it's in an industrial area not residential like before, nothing around it but industrial stuff, just a gloomy depressing part of the city. Our badge has the tree on it , representing how wooded the area around the dell was with 'the common' a huge parkland/woodland area in middle of city right near the dells location, a couple streets away. So being in our new ground where theres not a tree in sight for a square mile, our badge doesnt even make sense now. The immediate area arund the stadium? Pure tarmac. Again not a tree or bush or shrub in sight. The walk to the dell was a nice one before, through a relatively nice part of the city which was quite sheltered weather wise. Now its depressing AF, through a high crime area that everyone avoids at any other time, then along a main road over a small bridge where you get soaked, in one of the windiest areas of the city, into an industrial estate. Wind also seems to play more of a role in the football at st marys too, not a good location at all as its basically on the river mouths edge , meaning the wind whips right up the river from the sea and eventually over the ground. They built a railway platform there next to the ground that would avoid that nasty walk but never opened it, probably because of policing issues or something, I forget now. Also, there isnt anywhere for anyone to park so everyone has to park in the city centre and walk down. On Saturdays. Great plan lmao. Traffic in the city was bad enough before. But sadly there wasnt much choice as this city was/is packed up space wise, being coastal, and the area around the dell was filled with houses and blocks of flats. So unless we were going to buy up whole neighbourhoods, they couldnt expand the dell itself.

I haven't seen too many comments from Southampton fans saying they like St Mary's.

@@historyoffootball87 I went to a game at Brentford earlier this season. New ground has a more traditional feel about it rather than the sterile feel so many seem to have.

I would love to see The Dell, The baseball ground rebuilt. Interestingly both teams have the same ground now. Flat pack special.

I was a season ticket holder at the dell for the last 3-4 years before it was knocked down. Loved the place and it was fully responsible for keeping said up on a few occasions. Team hated playing there because the fans are so close to the touchline. Magical memories of Matt Le Tiss scoring that last goal on the final day. it was like being in a Hollywood film.

It was not a lake that was drained it was actually a small river. it flowed through a culvert under the pitch. When the pitch was bombed, as you mentioned, the culvert was broken and the pitch was flooded. There is a picture in one of the books on the history of the Saints showing this,
