Just for some extra context: "Laplace's Demon" is a physics/philosophical postulate that presents the idea that, (in short) "If someone (the demon) were to know the exact position and momentum of every atom in the universe, they would be able to extrapolate all past and future events." Essentially what is known as determinism. To put it casually, Laplace's Demon is the idea that if you had perfect universal knowledge of the present you could perfectly infer the future (and the past).

Originally the translation patch was supposed to come out on Halloween 2001, but it ended up buggy and left unfinished until they completed it in 2018. The original game was originally released in 1987 as part of the Ghost Hunter Series by HummingBird Soft, which also made the Record of Lodoss War games for Japanese home computers, and was later used as the inspiration for the first two Deep Dungeon games. Also, the original game got a sequel on home computers (I think) titled Paracelsus no Maken.

This looks and feels like a spiritual successor to Sweet Home (which is already a good thing, that game was way ahead of its time), with an overhauled interface and a way friendlier gaming experience, which makes it even more appealing to me. Thanks a lot for showcasing this, man. I wouldn't have known otherwise.

What is even funnier than seeing someone in a body bag is you carrying around a gibbering insane party member. When their MP drops to 0, they go insane (A confuse status that persists until it is restored by sleeping at the hotel or treating it at a hospital), which causes their attack and accuracy to skyrocket, dealing a lot of damage, but may attack other party members. While insane on the map, they spin around while you walk.

Always impressive managing to be scary with the limitations of being 2D like this. Metroid Fusion is one of the best horror games ever despite being a GBA game too. The devs have to be really creative. No jump scares and overuse of darkness and shadows for then to abuse.

I sometimes wish that "replay value" wasn't considered an aspect of game reviews. At least, not a given alongside reviewing graphics and gameplay. As you said, there's nothing wrong with a story-driven game that you replay at long intervals. That's practically every RPG around, isn't it? I could never crank through a Final Fantasy game, full complete it (as is my wont), and immediately restart after the credits roll. And yet at least since I was a kid in the 90s, it's been a big deal to talk about replay value. Also, can it really be quantified? I've played Mega Man 2 more times than I care to think about and I have a friend who literally plays it at least once a day, but I strongly doubt any reviewer would look at a bog-standard 2D platformer, albeit a very good one, and say "This has tons of replay value!" Because it doesn't, at least in the sense meant.

"Guess what it is that I do" is the best class selection screen text ever. The game should have outright trolled players by going against their wishes and picking a random class instead. "You GUESSED I was a detective... but you're wrong! I'm really a medium! Fooled you!" 😝

In this case, "Laplace's Demon" might actually be a more accurate translation than "Demon of Laplace". In English, Laplace's theorized intelligence is referred to as "Laplace's demon." Just as we'd say "Maxwell's demon" instead of "Demon of Maxwell." Though I haven't played the game, and cannot say that there isn't something about the story that might actually make the "of" translation a better fit.
