"You'd be surprised at what you can find on ebay." No, no - A radiator with questionable tig welds, and bolt holes that don't line up is about what I'd expect.

Unfortunately, buying the correct radiator or having his old radiator recored would exceed the value of his whole car! $100 eBay radiator is really the only option without spend at least 4-8 times that much! There is probably one out the that would fit better, though. The days of going to the junkyard and pulling the rad out of one of a whole line of wrecked Mavericks ended around 1985.

Fun fact for you. The fan, when mounted to the front of your radiator, should be wired to push cool outside air through the radiator and not pulling hot engine bay air through the radiator.

Dylan my friend... I have a feeling you are going to watch this video and say to yourself, “man I should have done that differently.” Or, “ I should have done that.” I really don’t want to sound like one of those guys who criticize people and say “Oh you did that wrong.” It’s your car and your video. If you want to paint pink and purple polka dots, go for it!!! I’ve just watch enough of your videos to know you would approach a few things differently. But keep up the good work and enthusiasm you have for these classic cars and trucks and I’ll keep cheering you on!

With the smoke clearing up, I'd guess that your rings are getting re-seated. I'd definitely do an oil change with some Marvel Mystery Oil in it to clear out any carbon buildup from the bearings and crankcase. I know it's nice to get a brand new radiator sometimes, but for $100 - $150, you could probably get the original radiator completely rebuilt and have all the hose connectors and fittings be in the original locations and be the exact same size and thread count etc. That would save you some headaches when you're dealing with a project like this. You definitely did the right thing flushing the block out, although I would have probably just run a garden hose into the suction side and kept it running instead of going with bottles of water. That said, you're probably not near a garden hose. Nice work!

Great patience Dylan! I’ve had Mustangs that fought me too, it appears to me once the cooling system straightened out and your oil change is complete the In-line 6 will show its true hand to you. If it were me and knowing how hard it is to kill an in-line 6, I personally would run the most cost effective zinc oil in that old 6 and some motor honey of your flavor and see if that helps the blow by or whatever is causing the smoking.. just my two cents but I love those old Mavericks too. Great job buddy. Thank you!

I was a really young “car crazy” kid (when I say young, I mean under age 10) when these cars were around on the road as both new and used cars. People younger than me might not appreciate just how disposable these cars were back in the day. They were the Ford Focus/Chevy Cobalt of their day. Other than the rather rare 2 door, V8 “Grabber” small bumper models, these car got very little respect! Most of the nicer examples around by the mid 1980s had been elderly owned but those were typically the 4 door models that nobody wanted other than basic transportation. Any comparison to a Mustang was dead by the time I was in high school in the late 1980s. The only thing worse than a Maverick on the small Ford “coolness scale” back then was a Mustang II. In retrospect, it really wasn’t that they were such bad cars, it was just that they had fallen so far out of style and they were not old enough to be considered anything but the very oldest, cheapest, most common of used cars at the time. I can still remember locating a solid but slightly sad 1975 Maverick Stallion on my neighbor’s used car lot in 1990. I could have owned it for all of $450.00 and drove it home. I remember thinking it was probably the smartest looking new Maverick on the Ford lot in 1975; black with silver accents/stallion horse decals and a black bucket seat interior and sport wheels ... 302 and automatic, ps, bdb, a/c. I actually considered it for a split second before I walked away. As solid as it was, it wasn’t worth the cost of a repaint, new tires, and whatever mechanical repairs it required. 30 years on, I wish I had it now.

My folks had a 73 Maverick when I was growing up. Mom's dad worked at the local small town Ford dealership. It was a pretty neat car, same motor as yours. Seems like Dad worked on it all the time, but it was nice inside. Ours had the brown vinyl interior with the western themed embossing which was pretty fancy. Keep up the good work, looking forward to more videos on this ol' car!

The thermostat housings always break on these old ford straight sixes. I’m super surprised this one didn’t! Maybe you just have the magic touch. Also, be careful with these 200s the remanufactured water pumps occasionally need a few paper gaskets to prevent the impeller from hitting the number one cylinder wall.

I have owned many of those little ford 6 cylinder engines including a maverick just like yours and they are tough little motors. The head gasket is fine, I have personally overheated two of these to the point of dying several times and didn't hurt the gasket. I have seen one blow but it blew from the cylinder to the outside and not to a coolant passage and that was after running it wide open with it overheating on the highway until it stopped. Your core support is bent on the bottom and that is causing a lot of your radiator fitment problems. Those radiators are great, I have 5 of them and they sometimes take a little modding to fit right but I have never had a leak out of any of them. I agree with the others that you might have a ring stuck but a lot of it might also be the valve stem seals and the oil is almost certainly some of it too. When it comes time to move it, you can just loop a hose across the transmission lines and clamp them but don't run it too long with the transmission low on fluid because it will burn the pump up. Before you mess with the timing or adjusting the carb, fix all the vacuum leaks, that will throw everything off if you don't. It's cool that you're bringing this maverick back from the dead, these poor guys just don't get the credit they deserve.

Wow.. I had a 70 Maverick with the 250 six in high school.. A great car... It was absolutely bulletproof.. I could NOT kill that engine.. the distributor was worn out, and I had to set the points like every 2k.. This video took me back to those days.. I replaced the radiator, the water pump, & the starter every year... brakes, and greased the wheel bearings.. I really learned to love Ford, and how to work on cars... It was always something.. but my Maverick was very clean.. I worked on it all the time.. If it was rusty, I wire brushed it, and painted it.. The smoke in the exhaust on mine, turned out to be the rubber valve seals... Oil would run down the valves in to the cylinders.. It smoked the worst on idle, and there would be a "puff" if I stomped on it.. It had the grabber stripes and actually had a piece on the trunk lid that looked kinda like a spoiler.. I had a water temp and oil pressure gauges in a pod under the dash.. The A/C really sapped the power of that 250.. But it had a great radio, and I loved it.. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!!

Back in the '80s my friend had a monster powerful Maverick, that car was fast! Anytime I see a Maverick I think about the time he lunched the rear end with a hot backroad launch and we had to tow it back to his house with me driving the Maverick trying to balance the tow-rope distance so the bumpers wouldn't touch heh. The Maverick is a cool ride for sure.

Loved my old man’s 1972 maverick. Only car he ever owned. Bought it new in 72, and when he passed away in 1988, it had just a touch over 74,000 miles on it. That little straight six was great, you couldn’t kill it! The sad part was that when I had been out partying too hard some nights, I would call in to work and blame the car, saying it broke down. But karma came back to me, later I sold the car to buy a used 1980 thunderbird. Thought I was pooping in the high cotton since the thunderbird had A.C. And other things the little maverick didn’t have. As it turned out the only thing the thunderbird didn’t have was the Maverick’s reliability, it was a total dog, always breaking down for real! 😂 So even though that little maverick was simple, I learned to miss that little, dependable car….
