Slight correction, all the way down on an AK safety lever is traditionally semi auto, and the middle position is full auto. But it obviously doesn't matter if it's a semi only trigger so it looks like the factory has decided that you didn't need the long throw. That's a thoughtful touch!
@rediius2 жыл бұрын
Oh, and speaking of the thoughtful safety, you can leave it on safe and pull the charging handle. The extractor will come back far enough to eject the chambered round but not far enough to pick up the next one still in the magazine, so you can clear a Zastava rifle without dropping the mag or turning the safety off. The Serbs put some serious engineering into their designs!

@stevenbobbybills2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelnolan6054 it's actually the exact opposite. Semi is all the way down because it isn't a fine motor movement, it's just a full push. Full-auto in the middle is intended to be a deliberate action. The idea was that a soldier under pressure wouldn't accidentally engage full auto, as full auto is usually not the best solution and will make a panicked solider waste ammo, making them more likely to end up with an empty weapon at the worst possible time.

Honestly it just has very aggressive extractor, it doesn't even have to be very over gassed to do that. I practice with snap caps indoor with my m90, just pulling the charging handle back to eject one will launch it across my living room into the ceiling, and I am not slamming it back to be clear, it just has a insane ejection system. There is a downside though, the really aggressive extraction tends to dent up cases, not good if you reload, but on the flip side, very reliable and isn't going to have failures to eject.

Zastava AK guns were also called a female “gypsy”. In Yugo wars back in early 1990’s, we (Croats) were all looking to get hand on Serbian AK as it was extremely reliable compared to Romanian and Hungarian AK 47 versions. If you would shoot two full magazines from either Romanian or Hungarian and press the barrel against the wall, the barrel wall band. That was not the case with the Serbian model. Later in the war we got some guns from Argentina and (East) Germany and a few other countries but nothing of that beat the reliability of AK models.

Never been a fan of relying on US made magazine parts for 922(r) compliance. Even though I've never heard of anyone getting jammed up by 922(r) because they used the "wrong" magazine from their stash. (For that matter, I don't recall hearing of any cases where an individual ran into 922(r) enforcement, unless the charge was added as a cherry on top of a while cornucopia of other gun charges and they happened to find out he had too many "scary imported parts" after they'd already siezed the gun for the other violations. I got one of these last week, only 180 rounds through it so far (brass case, half 5.56, half 223). Accuracy is as good as me with irons, mine is straight, requiring only a slight adjustment of the front sight to zero. It's also been 100% reliable on gas setting 2 with both a steel mag and the included plastic mag. I think Ian's problems are with that mag, seems like a lemon. I agree it's over gassed, haven't tried setting 1 yet but setting 2 seems too much. The manual recommends setting 3 for the first few hundred rounds, which for mine is certainly excessive though maybe not with Tula 223. I might have to copy Ian and get the wood furniture, very pretty like that :).

Small update, put another 60 rounds through it yesterday on setting 1 without bothering to clean it after the last 180. It ran fine, 0 malfunctions and was far softer shooting. I own two WASR AK's that I bought when they were $550 and $600 respectively. I'm in caliornia so, you buy the guns even if you don't particularly need them because there is no guaranty you will be able to buy them tomorrow! They're Romanian, of course, and rather shoddy in the finishing touches - I literally had to file a huge burr they left on the hammer, for one thing. But despite the niggling details they're still fine guns. The parkerizing on both was a bad joke, so 12 years ago I redid both, with Alumahyde II in matte black. After 1,000 rounds they still look new today. Then I found a fine set of blonde AK furniture for only $120 and they make the guns truly beautiful to look at.

@bareideru40532 жыл бұрын
I hate nitpicking, but this will probably be my only chance to correct Gun Jesus, so here we go: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zsqdl8510JObeWQ.html No, traditionally "all the way down" on the selector lever would be semi-auto. Top to bottom, an AK selector lever goes SAFE - FULL AUTO - SEMI AUTO. I know it makes no sense from a user standpoint, but it is what it is.
@aggrodkreg43212 жыл бұрын
I don't remember where I heard it, but apparently the logic behind that is that is that the designers wanted for the end user to make an effort to go into full auto from safe. If you're flicking the safety off in a rush, chances are you're landing at the bottom, and thus, in semi. It makes sense, if you're familiar with how military doctrine tends to behave when it comes to telling its personnel what to do.
@bareideru40532 жыл бұрын
@@aggrodkreg4321 Could be that, or could be just a side effect of the way the selector lever operates. It's a conventional Browning double-hook trigger, and when the safety lever is at the top (SAFE) position it blocks both the trigger and the rear hook from going up. On semi-auto the lever moves back doesn't block the trigger anymore, but still blocks the rear hook, meaning that it doesn't catch the hammer, hence full-auto. And all the way down it blocks neither, so the rear hook can catch the hammer after a shot, hence semi-auto. Changing that would require using a different type of fire selector. The one on the AK is most likely heavily influenced by the one on the Remington Auto 8, but it simplified.
@bareideru40532 жыл бұрын
@Sauli Luolajan-Mikkola I don't think I ever contested that point. I know it's easier to switch to semi-auto than full-auto. But since you mentioned the Soviet doctrine - keep in mind that the AK was not really intended to be used in semi-auto in most situations. The AKM's operator manual is quite clear on the subject, for example. The idea is to keep the rifle on full-auto and then use either short bursts (up to 5 rounds, normally 3-4 round bursts) or long bursts (up to 10 rounds), depending on the type of target, the distance, etc. Semi-auto is only mentioned in passing. So, in essence, they made it harder for the soldier to select the primary mode of fire, compared to the secondary.

Once again a great review. I've never been a fan of tactical accessories. This firearm with wood furniture gives it a more classic look. When Ian shouldered the firearm it became apparent how the folding stock would be an issue with a southpaw. Aside from a few small hiccups at the end, this looks to be a well-made firearm. For me, the only thing I would change would be the rear sight from a notch to a Mojo peep sight. Unfortunately, where I live, the AK platform plus the AR platform are banned from civilian ownership. Oh well, sucks to be me.

@Sauli Luolajan-Mikkola All AKs since the late AK-74 and AK-74M have a "hook" on the top surface of the recoil spring disassembly button, which prevents it from being depressed and cover removed in any situation except when you purposefully pull the cover up. It's a 2-cent solution to the problem compared with this Serbian one. For GP launcher, an additional button on the top surface of the button itself was added in the 90s, and now apparently there is a newer version with a latch on the side of the button (even less likely to be pressed accidentally) PLUS the hook on top.
