That style of trigger pack disassembly reminds me of the Tokarev TT pistol. It really is a nice solution, because any problems with the trigger pack can be fixed with a new complete assembly, very handy for armorers. From a mechanical design perspective, I'd call it pretty well done for a military service pistol.

I just bought one in Canada, made it seems for Canadians: two 10 round magazines WITHOUT the large cutouts of the 15 round mags! They have small holes at 5 and 10 rounds count. Magazines are serialized with the gun serial 3 and dash1 and dash 2. I had to buy an Uzzi reloader for them. Ian did not notice the feed ramp exists, but it is on the steel insert and is large enough to take rounds from right or left, then directs them into the barrel.

The inconsistent quality control is caused by not having enough competition due to that most of the firearm manufacturers are owned and run by the government, and we all know what shenanigans can be made from bureaucracy. Therefore, simply copying the existing proven designs do not guarantee a good outcome eventually (take NP22/P226 copy for example).

Thanks for the overview, Ian! Those trigger pulls looked a little rough, I'll bet it's a split between the military not being concerned about a handgun's trigger quality, plus some imprecise fitment due to the modular nature of the FCG. That's a slick and unexpectedly modular system on a military wonder-9, I kind of love it. Double-feed mags are just icing on the cake, and Ian called it: that star was the first thing to catch my eye after taking in the gun's general profile. Then he said one of the magic words for com-bloc nerds: Norinco. 'Ooo, an unobtainum Norinco handgun? I clearly need that.'

You are absolutely right about that, but most of the problems arise from parts not being properly finished something that might be alleviated after some break in period during which some owners get disappointed with the gun and get rid of it or ruin it during kitchen table gunsmithing operations. I've come across several Norinco rifles and handguns most in .22LR that were hopeless cases but after careful examination and some polishing done here and there ended up functioning perfectly. But of course unless they address those problems they will keep on losing market status.

I have a couple Norinco's; I have found to make them better is to replace the parts that are important with actual parts from the firearm they are cloning. Example the NP22 I replaced some of the parts with Sig P226 to make the firearm a lot better. I've spent less then $100 US to tweek the NP22. And its great now!

The reason why they uses rotating barrel is due to the requirement of sound suppressor. Browning short barrel stroke system require the barrel tilt upward, a heavy suppressor will change the delay and action characteristics. The rotating action will avoid most of them, hence became the action of this pistol. The Type 98 is reliable, both 5.8 and 9 version. However, only when you uses standard military standard 9mm round, no HP no flat tip at all. The feeding slop is designed only for standard military round.

The French MAB PA-15 also has a rotating lock. Besides accuracy, I think it also adds to reliability. Since the locking system works in the opposite direct to the rifling, the bullet in the barrel keeps it closed and is, in a way, self-adjusting, as the stronger load will hold the action closed longer while a lighter load will release it more quickly. I've never had a jam with my MAB and it's accuracy is greater than my ability as a shooter.

Thanks for another great exposition video. The frame mounted safety decocker is very desirable. The steel subframe makes for easy maintenance. The bushing is good for practical accuracy and the rotating barrel with dual recoil springs should allow a pleasing recoil impulse. The DA/SA trigger is long and hard like most duty pistols. Your last reference to it not competing with Glock made me chuckle because Glock is beta testing a very similar rotating barrel design with the Germany Police. LOL

I shot the Type 92G in China last year, along with full auto milled Type 56, Type79SMG, Type 81 and Type 95-1. The newer Type 92G is based on the export version of the 92, which uses 9x19 Luger, added standard accessories rail. It's an okay gun, for the price it's pretty good 😂 but, because gun ownership is banned in China, so there aren't really any competitions going on, and soldiers and police officers don't know what's good or what's bad. They only know how to effectively use the weapon they were issued with. The feeding problem gets worse in 5.8mm version, which only issued to officers as a symbol of command. Type 92 is starting to retire from a lot of police departments. The border anti-terrorist unit switched to Glock 19/17, the regular PDs started to make a switch to NP22 (Sig P226 clone) and China's own 9mm revolver ( rimed 9mm case, oddly shoots like a .22lr ). And since most soldiers never use their pistol, the Army isn't too concerned about the quality 😂 Unlike the US, all firearm design and manufacturing are owned by the government, so the trail for new pistol is just a bunch of internal bureaucracy. China has the ability to make good products, the new Oppo and Huawei phone, the supercomputer and the missile. But because of this internal bureaucracy, there aren't any quality control with firearms.

The original design of the Type 92 is no problem, but it has never been able to pass the muddy water test on the light weapons test field, so it is not appropriate to change the magazine to a double-row double-entry + hollow design. However, after changing the magazine, the design team did not change the internal feed route: the original magazine was single-advance, and the bullet's horizontal feed route was straight; but the double-entry magazine had to " Twist "a certain angle to" arch "in. This change is no problem for the 5.8mm 92, because the 5.8x21mm bullet is "slim", but the 9mm bullet is "thick and short". This change is a serious flaw for the 9mm 92. It could have been further improved, but the military stated that instead of using 9mm 92, the design team would not have to follow up and improve. However, the police did not have the right to entrust the design of light weapons. At that time, they had no choice but to use the 92-9 defective handgun. Beef up the fire control frame a little, improve the overall quality (especially trigger feel) and provide more grip options (and more caliber options) and this could be a very serviceable pistol.

I've never handled a CF98, and I know I don't know anything worth speaking about, but looking at your example gives me flashbacks from the Ruger P98 selfloaders I used to sell at the shooting range where I worked. I can really FEEL that wiggly trigger as it's pulled through its arc... it makes me pray for Smith & Wesson. I don't know if I can watch this! It makes me queasy...

Was the CF-98 ever chambered for the 7.62x25 cartridge? Ian didn't say it was but the image pictured above in 0:25 I thought implied that it was, though over the last few days of looking around I've had no luck with finding an example of this pistol or even any information about it being chambered for 7.62x25. Does anyone else know anything about this?

No, the info is out there and easily found; the Chinese DoD formed a good relationship with Soldier of Fortune magazine back in the 1980's and lets them interview, do test fires, and everything in between. The Chinese consider the 5.8x42 and 5.8x22 cartridges to be military-exclusive to the People's Liberation Army, possession or sale of any weapon chambered for either--or the ammunition itself!--is an execution offense, period! That is why police use the 9mm version. 5.8x22mm pistol cartridge uses 45-grain FMJ semi-spitzer with steel armor-penetrator core, like US "green tip" M855 5.56x45mm round, at 2200 fps. Its sole purpose is putting bullets through helmet or vest of police quality at very short range, less than 50 feet, with enough retained penetration to kill with good shot placement. This is like, cultists take over a police station and arm up situation.

@@northumbriabushcraft1208 Sounds like a bunch of BS to me. 5.8 seems like a shit round and so does this pistol. Edit: out of a pistol, it's comparable to a 22 mag lol! They also say it has 1,500 fps, which I doubt. How many stages of fudging did that figure go through?

Ian, any thoughts on how the existence of this effects the Steyr - Sig lawsuit. The patent claim is over a metal serialized chassis in a plastic grip. Steyr's patent is from 2001 and Sig's is from 2007. This being prior art to both patents could have major implications to the validity of both patents and any claims.

Seth Rich China has NEVER granted any copyright claims to any foreign companies. Check out the old Top Gear episode where they go to China and check out all the copies car models. A Chinese company directly copied the BMW X5, BMW sued, China did nothing.
@sethrich5998
@sethrich5998 6 жыл бұрын
I think you misunderstand the situation I was describing, it has nothing to do with China patent claims. The Chinese version came first in this case, the country of origin has no relevance, just the fact that it exists. In order to patent something you must show that the idea is original, part of this is claiming what prior art exists and showing how your patented idea is different. I don't believe either the Steyr or Sig patents included this pistol as prior art or differentiated how theirs was unique. The result could be that neither Steyr or Sig have patent rights to the idea.

@sethrich5998
@sethrich5998 6 жыл бұрын
Forestal Frank That's not true. You can't stop someone from making something unless you own a patent on it which is what you're referring to. However, you can't patent something yourself that already exists. That's the issue here. This product existed before either the Steyr or Sig patents which may nullify their patent rights. Prior art falls under fair/free use if the original creator never filed a patent.

H&K VP70 had a similar hybrid frame as early as 1970 if not earlier.. the Chinese might have been able to patent the modularity claim, but the whole idea of metal within polymer kinda lies on the surface..

They already made lots of changes to the design a long time ago. This is not the standard service pistol. 9mm versions are not only for export but also used by police. (5.8 penetrates too much, SF don't even use it in international competitions because it would penetrate the thin steel target and fail to knock it down - thus not counting score-wise) NP-22(sig-clone) and the likes were preferred over this original design, so they made a QSZ-98B or was it 98-1.

Given that the Chinese put a arsenal number on all their weapons, the final 3-digit number is the factory number. (As an aside, I got lucky way back in the 90's and picked up an MAK with the '386' mark, and milled receiver... the same factory that makes their sniper / Olympic marksman weapons. For an AK, it's uncommonly accurate.)

I suspect it would perform better with that 5.8mm mini-rifle round rather than what I assume would be a 9mm conversion sold for export. What with 9mm para being a much heavier round. It seems a tad like a Chinese interpretation of the FN Five-Seven plus a predecessor of the P250's removable lower.
