Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
The Hotchkiss Universal was a closed-bolt submachine gun submitted to French military trials in the late 1940s to replace the MAS-38. The French were looking for a compact SMG in 9mm Parabellum, and tested guns form the state arsenals as well as the Hotchkiss and Gevelot companies. The Universal (also designated the Model 010 by Hotchkiss) really doubled down on the compact elements, with a design that incorporated a folding stock, grip, magazine well, and telescoping barrel. It could fold up in to a remarkably compact package, complete with a loaded magazine in a completely safe stowed format.
A total of about 7,000 Universals were made, in what appear to be two series. The first were marked CMH (Carabine Miltrailleuse Hotchkiss) and serialized on the trigger assembly and the second marked CMH2 and serialized on small plates riveted to the stock tubes. Several variations on parts can be founds, including simplified front sight blocks and simplified rear sights - I suspect the simplified patterns were the CMH2 as an attempt to reduce the cost of the guns. Small batches were sold to Venezuela and Morocco, as well as an unidentified middle eastern nation and a few even to the French CRS security service. A small number were also tested by the Foreign Legion in Indochina in 1954.
Ultimately, of course, the MAT-49 won the military trials. The Universal was rejected for being too expensive and too complicated - both totally valid assessments. It is a gun that put all its chip on compactness, and made way too many tradeoffs in the process to be really viable.

I believe that it's fair to say that the Engineers really took it to heart when the request came down to produce a type of SMG that collapsed down to a compact size, suitable for use by armoured vehicle crews, aircrew and transport units. From an engineering perspective that gun is a masterpiece! No firearms engineering departments before or since have ever designed a weapon that collapsed to be quite as compact as this. That is a gun I would love to own, with two displayed in an illuminated glass display case, one folded, the other in the ready position. What a great team of Engineers they were to have come up with this truly remarkable configuration. Thank you so much for introducing such fantastical machines.

Keltec makes the Sub2000. It folds in half at the breach face, has a folded length of 16 inches, and it runs on glock magazines. I like the one I have, but I spent more than the original purchase price of the gun to replace a bunch of garbage grade plastic factory parts with quality machined steel and aluminum bits. It went from a cool novelty range toy with a horrible trigger, to a very good shooting, reliable pdw with the upgrades. I keep it in my SHTF kit.

@@bodyno3158 actually, you would never mention the grapes, only the region, the vineyard and the year. The sommelier might tell you about the mix of cépages, to which you would reply "very interesting". For example I pull out a mediocre bottle of Medoc I bought in LIDL today and it blathers on for many words about exactly where the wine comes from and what temperature to serve it at but it never mentions the grape varieties at all. It's a Medoc ffs, why would you want to know more.

Fascinating! That lower front sight extension serves double duty; (1) allows two-finger compression of the recoil spring to stow the barrel, and (2) securely holds the magazine in the well when it's folded up. Kel Tec took a few cues from this for their Sub 2000 carbine.

If this were to exist in a WWII game, it’s gonna have the slowest deployment speed due to the many folding procedures. Here’s how it will be used if some devs of WWII games will portray this one of a kind SMG. 1. If the Weapon is deployed for the first time, the weapon will have a folding animation when a match starts or spawn. The weapon will not be folded when you switch to your secondary or melee weapon. 2. The weapon is compatible with the MP40’s ammunition of 9mm. If the player finds an MP40, you can have the option to either use the weapon or take its ammunition. 3. If the weapon is out of ammunition, the folding animation plays except it’s going to be put back to its folded configuration. 4. If the player finds an ammunition box or an MP40, the folding animation plays, but a special animation will play: the weapon’s original magazine is replaced with the MP40’s.
