I appreciate Reuben because he asks questions that get to the heart of the work. A lot of photographers start taking photos to pass the time but so many seem ashamed to mention this, as if wandering is something to be embarrassed of. At least for street photography, wandering is both play & journey. Photography for many is therapy, it’s the freedom to show one’s perspective. Most importantly, to be a medium for creativity.

This is just so chock-full of great ways to think about one's photo work & practice. Thanks so much Ruben, Yuki, and Paulie!

One simple thing new photographers can do is not try to follow the big KZfaqrs and get committed to shooting only film. Digital by its nature is very good medium to learn and experiment. You can try different approaches and learn faster in the field. You get faster feedback. There is always time to slow down etc. but at start we have to just shoot more and not slow down by the process or the cost.

Reuben is outright excellent. I'm 32 minutes in, but what is absolutely screaming to me is Yuki "should" (lol- I know I know, but still, SERIOUSLY STILL) be shooting digital to practice and learn. Not making photos is a huge red flag thwarting growth. To incorporate the things he's focusing on, it's about speed in the ability to process information, which can be learned in repetition.

Ive gotten a portfolio review before but it definitely was only a surface level thing. This was like a portfolio psychology appointment ! I think people and their photos would definitely benefit from someone asking them tough questions regarding their motivation and goals of individual images rather than simply I like that picture and I dont like that picture. Great show!

Always enjoy listening and processing Reuben’s words of wisdom. In today’s world of photography it’s refreshing to discuss the “why” and thought process as an artist instead of just gear. I am excited to get my hands on the physical book at the end of the year!

if you are tying to sharpen your skills and get more feedback, i feel like it makes more sense to shoot digital since you can see the results right away. and it’s cheaper so you don’t have to worry about all of the throwaways. you don’t have to be a cool guy and shoot film to be a legit photographer. maybe save the film for special occasions or walk around cameras akimbo (digital/film) so you can have the best of both worlds. reuben talks about photography so rationally, it’s refreshing to know he still takes bad shots and struggles too. to take bad shots, is to be a photographer 😎

Great video, like this for all the reason mentioned. Reuben for sure is someone I recommend all the time.

Really love the way Reuben gives advice and shares his mindset around photography! And also how he both challenges and encourages his students. The one thing I picked up this time around was this negation and apprehension Reuben seems to have around putting a box around things you like. Even with the tunnel vision concept. Yes with a rectangular frame, it may feel like a waste to have a single subject and not much else especially with traditional “street” even though he dislikes the genre, that could be the case. But I think when you start working in a sequence like for a book or zine, simpler photos with a single subject that the photographer was attracted to can help support and move the narrative along. A compilation of impactful, complex, layered images could require breaks to allow those to shine. I think Reuben knows this but I wanted to comment on this so people watching don’t take away the idea that every photo in a project NEEDS tension, layers, big questions.

Thank you so much, Reuben, Yuki and of course Paulie, for this great video, I also liked the recap at the end. (maybe I'll do a 1-on-1 myself sometime....) I can relate to all the issues discussed like tunnel vision ( still have it) and trying to make more complex pictures. Not the ones that have all the ingredients like layers/light/shadow/non-overlapping people, and for good measure a balloon, half a kid, a dog or a hand thrown in, I always find these boring, and now I know why: they lack TENSION. Can't get this out of my head now..... Maybe "tension" could be a topic in a future episode? Does it actually have to be there or can you create it, if so how; what to look out for; can it only be done in locations like Cuba or India, or can it be done anywhere, even in a "boring" place?

At 16:18 you're talking about the people on their phones is lacking "context." Not if you put it in a context. No one is talking to each other. It is a sign of the times. You create the context.

It seems to me that there always has to be a lot of thinking, I think it would be better to take photos of weddings and social events 😜

So I think this photographer only snaps his exposures for the subject that is the subject. His isn't concentrating at all on how the subject occupies spaces. Otherwise he'd be measuring off and composing in a way that is complimented by the backdrop itself. Like frames in a movie. If he only shoots spontaneous streetstyle he should try more staged images. It would teach him to harmonise the whole frame rather than randomly trying to capture the likeness of one particular subject.

The problem with this "teaching" from Reuben is that you can easily justify the complete opposite of what he is saying. Like... I found pretty much all these photographs from this photographer interesting and the criticism didn't make sense at all. It almost sounded like Rueben is someone tired of photography and this guy is just bursting with inspiration.

Compelling viewing.
