Formatting Thousands, Millions, and Billions in Google Sheets
The vastness of spreadsheets can be daunting, especially when you have spreadsheets filled with seven-, eight-, or nine-digit numbers. But fear not, for Google Sheets offers a powerful tool to tame the chaos: formatting numbers. By employing this magic, we can condense these gargantuan figures into concise, easy-to-grasp units like thousands ("K"), millions ("M"), and billions ("B").
Imagine a spreadsheet teeming with website traffic data. Each day's count stretches into the millions, making it a visual jumble. By formatting these numbers with "M", we instantly transform the chaos into a clear picture. "12,345,678" becomes a sleek "12.3M," instantly revealing the month's traffic as a manageable twelve million, not a dizzying string of digits.
But the magic doesn't stop there. Google Sheets allows us to customize our formatting, tailoring it to our specific needs. We can choose to round numbers to the nearest thousand, million, or billion, ensuring our data remains accurate while maintaining conciseness. For instance, a chart showcasing annual revenue might benefit from formatting to millions, while a daily sales report might shine with thousands.
Beyond aesthetics, formatting numbers improves data comprehension. By introducing familiar units like "K" and "M", we make complex data more accessible to a wider audience. Imagine a report presented to stakeholders; dense numbers can be alienating, but concisely formatted figures instantly spark understanding and foster informed decision-making.
So, next time your spreadsheet numbers threaten to overwhelm you, remember the power of formatting. With a few clicks, you can transform your data into a clear, concise story, making your sheets not just informative, but truly impactful. Embrace the "K", the "M", the "B", and unleash the hidden potential within your numbers!

Very helpful -- thank you! I was struggling to get thousandths decimal specifically for currency. Thanks for showing that you actually accomplish this *without* using the custom currency option.

Hi, Thanks for the tutorial, Is it possible to show specific labels in Y-Axis? for example in the sample in your video @1:34, can we show only specific labels for rating such as (3,5,6,7,8) in vertical axis instead of 0,2 ,4 , ... ?

Thanks for watching! It depends on your data. In that specific example, the Y-axis labels adjust according to the data. Are there any other details you could add for your example? Unless you have a horizontal bar chart, you don't have as much control over the Y-axis labels as your data does.

Use this formula and make sure you change the cell to the desired numerical format: =if((right(F35,1))="K",value(left(F35,(len(F35))-1))*1000,if((right(F35,1))="M",value(left(F35,(len(F35))-1))*1000000,"")).

The problem is that when the figure is less than 1000, for example 890, it is shown as 0.9K instead of showing the 890 and only simplifying when it exceeds 4 digits.

Thanks for watching! That's intentional because if someone is skimming over the data or just looking at it normally, they could mistake 890 as greater than 1.1K because there are the same number of characters for both and the larger number has a decimal point while the smaller number doesn't.

Thanks, but what if some numbers are in 1K, some 1.1B and some 1.1M, we want to edit all at once instead of separately doing each cell.

What do I have to do if I want to convert a 1.3M into a real number like 1,300,000 ?

Good idea for a video! Try something like this formula: =INDEX(IF(REGEXMATCH(A1&"", "M"), REGEXEXTRACT(A1, "\d+.\d+|\d+")*1000000, IF(REGEXMATCH(A1&"", "k"), REGEXEXTRACT(A1, "\d+.\d+|\d+")*1000, IF(REGEXMATCH(A1&"", "B"), REGEXEXTRACT(A1, "\d+.\d+|\d+")*1000000000, A1:A4))))
