not just koreans and chinese... all asians will have their native name and their american name... but this is usually for asians that were born in the US. asians that migrated here will usually just have their native name... and then once they get to the US, they see that americans have a hard time pronouncing their names, so that's why they come up with an american name to make it more easier on everyone else.

What a powerful interview. I can relate the pressure from Asian communities. The fact that Justin wasnt in the right place at 16 and obviously knows so much better now, the older heads still see him as if he's still 16. They wont even bother to ask questions to see if he grew out of this. I feel you Justin. I never banged but the pressure is real and relatable.

I grew up when the Asian Boyz, and all'a them gangbanging shit in LA was on its highest level. I was taxed, bullied and picked on by my own Koreans all cuz I wasn't the strongest, and was probably went through the lowest time of my life. Your story and the years you've spent behind bars reminded me of the foo that used to bully me and even spat on my face, and all the painful old days that I hated so much but its all past now. Huge respect for your courage to speak to the public about the darkest and painful past, and really using the years behind bars to educate yourself. That's seriously a huge accomplishment in life to even get a college degree so to speak. Hope your residency status gets fixed and be given another chance to possibly live your dreams man. I feel for our Asian Brother . I got deported back to the UK after living in the US for 42 years .My Parents both got there Citizenship's I can understand why as I was in the streets with the drug game for many years . 2 State terms and 1 x Federal Term . It was right after 911 so they were deporting anyone that did over 1 year in prison . Moral Turpitude . I understand why it happened to me however I ran in to a few guys in ICE Detention that had very petty driving offenses they still deported our Brown / Asian Brothers and Sisters . To be perfectly honest it was the best thing that ever happened to me . Clean and Sober and Crime Free for 19 yeras now .

I remember the original Korean Boys over in the San Fernando Valley area back in 1988. Spanky from Korean Boys in the SF Valley - Good kat. Met him at Cleveland High School. What most don't know or understand is that back in the 80's and 90's in the LA and San Fernando area is that the Asians, in particular, Koreans and Filipinos embraced the hispanic gang cultural. Its waaaaaaaaaay different from now. No comparison. Asians back then wore size 38 -40 size Ben Davis, Frisco Bens and Dickies, with a pair of Cortez. The trash these fools wear now-a-days is nothing more than a clown suits. Also, Asian gangsters in those particular LA areas listened to oldies and spoke with a hispanic street slang. Shot out to Justin for transitioning from a cold blooded selfish gang member to a compassionate selfless human being. In his rap, Lucky refers to God but throught the song he uses vulgar language and vulgar sexuslly explicit devil's language. The devil has blessed Lucky with his podcast. Lucky is a great con man

As a Korean in the US who grew up around Asians who had cousins and friends in gangs, and I felt that loneliness/abandonment in my own family - it's nice to hear an OG like Yong Ju speak on that too. I never got put on cause my friends were Hmong and even they picked on me and I was also one of the tallest ones, but I was also lucky my dad drilled me over the summers with kids textbooks to get me in the advanced classes so I didn't really connect like that with the other dudes acting hard cause they said I acted too white or too smart. That shit was tough though cause my dad was a mean drunk and used to be a school bully so I got a lot of beatings at home. I ended up failing a lot of classes though cause the stress made me sleep in school and I was always hanging out with the bboys just trying to have fun. I even saw some bboys be affiliated too back then but this was over 10 years ago. Anyway even though I could never get into college cause I had to help my mom pay the rent after we all bounced on my dad when he was talking about killing my mom and always beating her, but I kept on learning outside of school cause I had some good teachers and some good role models who made me wanna learn as much as possible. I did get into alcoholism for like 4 years, did some party drugs and basically was fighting depression ever since I planned to end my life as a teen. I did some therapy which helped but it became unaffordable. I just ended up working manual labor jobs since then. But anyway I'm almost 30 and the past few years I've really been diving into books on world history, economics, politics. I realize so much of the shit I learned even in community college was sanitized/whitewashed/false. I learned how Korea was invaded by the US because Korea gained independence from Japan and the US fought to take Korea away from China's and Soviet influence. The US installed a far-right dictatorship in south Korea and helped start the KCIA. For 30 years after the Korean war, south Korea was under military dictatorships sponsored by the US. US companies also fired many Black and Brown industrial workers in the US who worked for around $10/hr and sent those jobs to south Korea where they paid less than $1/hr for the same jobs. Same shit happened in El Salvador, Bolivia, Philippines, Cuba, Nicaragua, and countless other nations. US greed started so many wars because the more egalitarian systems popping up across the world threatened US profits. So those countries were devastated, occupied with US military bases, markets dominated by US corporations, given high interest loans through IMF and World Bank mostly through US control, and the refugees were brought to the US to work low wage jobs and brought into poverty to enter the prison system for even cheaper labor. So we need to look at the bigger picture here. It's not just about mental health and bad parents and drugs. It's about the system working as it always did. Immigrants and refugees are just a labor export in the US and many other settler-colonial countries. Deportation is a tool to keep us in the status of 2nd class. And then you got Black folks making up the majority of the prison population, and the US got the highest rate of prisoners in the world with no effect on lowering crime. The 13th Amendment says that slavery is illegal EXCEPT under incarceration. So all of the Black, Brown and Asian folks in the prison system are legally classified as slaves since the 1800s. Chattel-slavery was only outlawed because industrialization made bigger profits than slavery, but they needed to replace the slave population with prison laborers. Anyway we gotta support people in poverty and bring the whole community up, not just get rich and bring up a few loved ones. Nobody's gonna come do the shit for us so we gotta use our own lanes to build a completely different system cause this shit ain't sustainable.
