I remember reading an article years ago about an escape artist who continued to claim his innocence. He escaped successfully 3 times before they found out he really was innocent, but there is a law that was called the 3 strikes that landed him a life sentence for escaping 3 times, even though he was found innocent for the original crimes.

The article I read was back in the 90's (which means he was incarcerated earlier than that), and unfortunately he did commit 3 crimes by escaping. So while it may be wrong, it's still legal. As for his legal actions I have never found out what happened afterward.

I don't think I could ever do something like that. I would be so nervous to be caught, not having any control over how that might go. Like, how do you back out of that if they start to figure out something is up? "Just kidding, prank call haha"? You really would have to commit.

@@LarryLawtonJewelThief Moondyne Joe was a legend. His escapes included carving around the lock of a cell with his cutlery, climbing over a prison wall with knotted bedsheets and mining through the prison wall. These were all separate escapes. Mind you, this was in the 1850’s, so security wasn’t as tight as it is today. But it was still an impressive feat.

I worked in a prison for several years. We had one guy escape. Impressive move he scaled the fence and hopped over the razor wire without so much as a scratch. As a member of the SORT team I was called in to help do the search. Two days later he was stopped at a roadblock and was recognized because one of the officers at the roadblock used to work his cell block. He had shaved, cut and dyed his hair, and looked very little like the pictures we had given to the local law enforcement agencies. But when he was recognized he took off and ended up crashing the car and then disappeared into the woods. Search continued but we had a general idea of where. I found him the next night hiding in some bushes outside of an abandoned house. He was genuinely worried he was in for a beating. No cameras, no witnesses and this wasn’t his first escape and was shot while being apprehended the first time. I just cuffed him up and walked him back to the car. He said something about being surprised I didn’t do anything to him. I was truthful, it is a part of the game. It is our job to keep him in the fences and his job to get out. He won that game but I’m still the undefeated world champion of hide and go seek.

@@LarryLawtonJewelThief Attempting to escape from prison is legal in Germany. Attempting to escape from prison is not punishable in Germany, as the law considers 'freedom' to be a basic human instinct. ... If an escapee is caught, he is liable to be sent back to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence. This is absolutely true, unless you harm or endanger anyone of course. Germany has extremely strict laws concerning its citizens rights.
@Blokewood3
@Blokewood3 2 жыл бұрын
That's right, but they will add charges for any other crimes committed during the escape, and except for the guy who jumped out a window, it's almost impossible to escape without committing more crimes: Dig a hole or tunnel? That's vandalism. Wear a fake uniform and walk out? That's impersonating an officer. Bribe a guard to look the other way? Bribery is itself a crime. Have a friend help get you out? Then they're guilty of aiding and abetting. Even if someone did escape without committing another crime, they would have to mail back their prison uniform or be charged with theft of government property.
@gibby2937
@gibby2937 2 жыл бұрын
@@LarryLawtonJewelThief That sure isn't the case in the U.S. and maybe it's for the good. Otherwise, you'd have people escaping morning, noon, and night. The extra charges in themselves are a deterrent. I once heard of a guy who was in a work furlough type facility, where they let you out in the morning to go to work and you report back in in the evening to the facility. Well, he had the brilliant idea of trying to escape during the weekend when he wasn't out to work. Of course, they caught him an hour later hiding in the bushes in an adjacent neighborhood. If he'd had half a brain, he would have took off as soon as he had been released for work in the morning. Then he would have had at least an 8-hour head start from the authorities. But, like Larry said, no one ever accused these guys of being geniuses.

Larry I love your channel and love what you're doing. You're a great dude! I always hated the stereotype that if someone had been locked up then they're a bad person. People just make bad decisions sometimes, and a lot of those people learn from their mistakes and use it for good like you are. My dad did 5 years when I was a kid. He was in the Ohio State Pen. It was built in the late 1800's and was used primarily as a reformatory up until the 1960s when funding was pulled and it was made into a maximum security facility which it was never intended for. My dad was in from 1984-1989 and the conditions had deteriorated like crazy. One year after he was released in 1990 the place was shut down because of the conditions. I have heard some crazy stories from him through the years and it honestly helped me stay on the straight and narrow path. A cool thing about it is that parts of The Shawshank Redemption were shot at that prison he was locked up in. Keep up the great work Larry, you are a great human being. Lots of love to you man! I hope you and your family have a great holiday.

I worked as a subcontractor at New Mexico's state prison / our maximum prison. Back in the 70s a prisoners woman hijacked a helicopter forced the pilot to fly into the main yard where her prisoner man ran to got in and they flew off. They were traced and caught within 42 hours. After that the prison built three guard/ gun towers - one for each housing units and one at the middle of the property. The gunmen in each tower were authorized to shout any unauthorized aircraft down. As a contractor I had to work in the towers and those gunmen were very serious about their jobs.

There was actually a Showtime limited series made about the Richard Matt and David Sweat escape, called "Escape at Dannemora." It was actually really good, and starred Benicio Del Toro and Patricia Arquette as well as several other great actors/actresses. They did a good job showing how they were able to manipulate and con the female prison employee (she wasn't a guard. If I remember correctly, she taught a computer or typing class... At least in the show) into helping them escape. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

Ayyyyyy the upstate NY breakout that hes talking about around 10:06 is super close to where I live. Before they caught those guys my small town was a MADHOUSE, everyone getting knocks door to door, choppers, absolute insanity cause its a particularly small town in a particularly rural area. Never expected to hear Larry talking about that haha

Hey Larry, I work in the Beaumont area around the prisons. There are signs on the highway and roads saying “Do not pick up Hitchhikers “. In my line of work I have to work on the prison premises, and I’ve been stopped by the “Rovers “ several times asking what I’m doing. Dig your videos !! You should do a video on the prisons over here in Beaumont, Texas. They’re pretty bad. Thanks bud.

I'm from Québec, easy time compared to the U.S. They had a place called Parthenais, it was headquarters for the Provincial (state) police. On the 11th floor they made the entire floor a holding center for heavies not sentenced yet. 3 guys got bedsheets and made it out a window, it was winter like minus 20 outside. The guards finally got there one guy was almost all the way down 4th 5th floor. Supposedly the screws cut the sheets. As well we had a helicopter escape...now that was cool, check it out. Great stuff, straightforward, honest and funny. Keep it going...peace Bro.🙏🏿🙏🏼

the prison break here in Denmark in Copenhagen, was coordinated with a smuggled in cellphone, and the news crew did not know about the prison break, all they were told was that there would be a protest by former prisoner, it was actually some of the people who helped coordinate the escape, that called the news. I have to say it was fun to watch on the news when it happened, and the 10 they didn't catch went straight from the prison break to the border and out of the country

I was a corrections officer for a few months (long enough for me to see what the job was like and me to think, "what the hell am I doing") at a juvenile institution in Louisiana. We had 2 escapes while I was there. The first was some boys climbed through a window in a room that they shouldn't have access to, hotwired a tractor to pull next to a fence and use it to climb over the fence after throwing spare clothing over the wire on the top. They were caught the next day hiding in an abandoned house not too far from the prison. The second was a young man who was allowed to drive a tractor pulling a trailer with other inmates and a guard driving the tractor out the back gate with the guard still on the tractor. This one I don't think the young man was actually expecting to escape because he just puttered around the town on the tractor with the trailer and guard still attached until the police pulled up.
