General James Mattis (Ret.), who served as secretary of defense for President Donald Trump, talks about why he left the post, how to become a great leader, if he would ever go back to working at the White House, and why he doesn't like the nick name "Mad Dog." Mattis appears on the latest episode of "The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations." The interview was recorded on Dec. 5, 2019 in Dallas.

Brenden ftw few theories to your question.. 1) would be that the subject matter he covers isn’t predicated on the same value point as regular entertainment whereas we value his channel on the # of subscribers.. 2) the ppl who he interviews are titans in there industries, ppl whom ppl don’t often know much about them accept for their companies etc...& so it wouldn’t surprise me much that entertainment side of this program gets less (or in your view) less traction. The 2 aren’t related... of course if it were p diddy (all entertainment.. bullshit) then ppl would be all over it. For me I preferred it quiet. Select few audience, specific interests etc etc & if that’s not good enough consider that there far less billionaires in the world anyway.. about 2k.. maybe the the 1st thousand are his buddies lol

Why do our troops call the enemy's army "terrorists"? Terrorists are people dedicated to attacking and terrorizing a civilian population. We were fighting the Iraqi army, not terrorists. I talked to an A10 pilot who blew up a busload of people in Iraq and he felt badly until he was told they were a busload of terrorists. My guess is the bus was full of Iraqi soldiers, not terrorists. Reading accounts of fighter pilots flying in Vietnam. They referred to the opposition as Communist pilots rather than enemy pilots. I can't imagine the MIG pilot as being a "Communist". His country is governed by a Communist form of government and he happens to live there. And since he lives in a country where we happen to be at war, he is the enemy. Our military historically gives the enemy a name that inspires anger and hate among our troops that some would call racist. However, there are many who often refer to our enemies as "the bad guys" and that's more realistic. God bless General Jim Mattis, Ph.D., USMC retired. Intellectuals in the Marines similar to Mattis are called "monks" and that's a compliment.

Give me a chance to do the right thing. If I have a public trial, it will be a media circus. However, I can agree to some form of probation. I just moved to a town where there is a military base. Ideally, I would report there daily for to be debriefed. I will also agree to take down my Quora writings publicly, provided they are saved for a later date to be edited and processed. I am looking for a way to be compliant and come on the right side of things legally. I totally agree that I would benefit from being secured or supervised in some way. However, I think we need to zero in on a compromise that suits everyone.

On Jan. 17, 1961, President Dwight Eisenhower gave the nation a dire warning about what he described as a threat to democratic government. He called it the military-industrial complex, a formidable union of defense contractors and the armed forces. Eisenhower, a retired five-star Army general, the man who led the allies on D-Day, made the remarks in his farewell speech from the White House.

This man should do what General MacArthur did....go away like a seasoned and honorable warrior would. MacArthur gave his final farewell to Congress and famously said "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away, an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty. Good-by". General MacArthur did just that. I think Marine General Mattis ought to follow that wise advice. Rather than run around giving speeches, doing talk shows, and making subtle and snide remarks about our (his) sitting President, when we have fellow Marines (Troops) in harm's way as I write. Political party matters not....you do NOT display disrespect for authority in this manner. It undermines the foundation of our Corps, and what the Military stands for. What our mission is. Established tradition. For very good reason. Doing speeches and the talk show circuit getting pats on the back to stroke your ego is not one of them. I imagine Mattis being a card-carrying member of the CFR (extreme anti-United States entity) has something to do with this behavior. Do you think maybe the thugs destroying our cities are emboldened by this General's thrashing of our President? Can you imagine them going "Yea, see...this Marine General agrees with us!! Trump is this or that", and off they go...more fueled destruction. What do America's enemies think when they see this from a respected Marine general? Any clues? Does anyone remember "Loose lips sink ships"? Well, Mattis's lips are doing no less. I know I am alone mostly on this point or will be on this chain, so be it. The masses sadly have been lulled to sleep. It must be said. Mattis...a great Marine in our ranks, but it should have stopped there, other than quiet support of our military as a civilian if he chose to do so, and use that skill set to uplift our younger military generation, not run around like a liberal cheerleader thrashing our Commander in Chief. My loyalties have been torn asunder. Utter respect for Mattis as a Marine. Total loss as a civilian. Though the true and honorable whole man should continue as it once was, and now I have to question even that with this post-service behavior. It is a damn shame, yet many just have no capacity to see this dilemma. God help us.

Easy to like Mattis. Rubenstein was overly deferential with his questions though. Mattis was right in the middle of an awful lot of pivotal events. Would have been nice to learn why the hunt for Osama was summarily abandoned by the Bush administration. It was that decision that kept us in Afghanistan with no further plan and no way out. But overall, Mattis is a guy you want on your side. "Trust is the coin of the realm."
@TheClemcaster
@TheClemcaster 4 жыл бұрын
Rubenstein is not a fool; he would have gotten short shrift had he pressured the General. Your assessment of why America is 'half in and half out' of Afghanistan is fairly superficial - although the 'no plan' bit is quite true...you'd think that something would have been learnt after Vietnam. Having said that, your slightly one dimensional evaluation is understandable as most people have little concept of why the US came to be there and why it continues to be a source of vexation - and not just for America I'd hasten to add. Gen. Mattis stated that it was a matter of duty that he accepted the post. In my opinion, he probably regretted his decision within the first week of taking on the task. Trump is an intellectual midget - with the attention span of a fruit fly by all accounts.

Mattis talks at 13:30 about knowing where Osama bin Laden was but missing the opportunity to catch him before he got to Pakistan. We would have had to invade Pakistan, yet another middle eastern country, in order to chase him down, so they waited till the CIA located him and sent the seals in in one night and took him out. Back in Afghanistan Al Qaeda and the Taliban were still fighting with American troops and we were taking all prisoners to interrogate for info on Bin Laden.

Dear General James Mattis (Ret.), Thank you for your service to the people of the United States of America. As much as we appreciate all your sacrifices, the country is now calling for you to run for President. We need someone who understands the use of allies, and their absolute importance during times of peace and war. That is not going to be a lawmaker, businessman, or commoner. The only way to get that type of leadership is with a seasoned veteran. It can not be any veteran, though they are all of the utmost value to the country. Their importance does not end when their service does, nor does yours. This candidate in particular, needs to take the burden of past misconduct that our officials have committed and (somehow) turn the eroding faith of the American people back to what it was. The petty divisions of parties needs to end in order for the country to move steadily forward. With the recent "rona" impact this may turn out to be the hardest division to repair since the civil war. Especially, if the economic impact that many forecast (myself included) comes to pass over the next ten years. We will need a solid voice that thinks hard before it speaks. I am not asking you to run because I like you, though I do. It is because of the names you quote when asked where you get your leadership skills. If we can not have the forefathers back to help with this chaos, then we need a soldier and scholar of their philosophy. That is you. Like it or not. Thank you, again, for your service. Sincerely, A.K. Hall

@@paulpasternak2026 If we do not tell that great man that it is his duty to run, he will not, because of his humble heart. But if he knows that we all want him as a leader, and that we need him, I would bet my life that he would take the job and do it to the best of his ability. He may not have had "kids" the conventional way, but that man has a fatherly affection for those who serve. We need that kind of commitment to the rest of the nation. Now more than ever.

It should be noted that both James Mattis and former FBI Director Robert Mueller both served in the Marine Corp. with distinction. Mueller served in the Marines during his tour of duty during the Vietnam War. The experience is detailed in Garrett Graff's book titled The Threat Matrix: Inside Robert Mueller's FBI And The War On Global Terror.

William McDonald Mueller is a horrible man! He’s a liar and lied to the country about the Russia Collusion Hoax. He investigated something for 2 years that he knew was a lie!

katie geiger talk is cheap. What’s your evidence. Because Mueller has 3 people in jail, 20 other indictments, and 400+ pages of evidence. Your Republican Senators, except for Mitt Romney, are spineless cowards.

@@mermaidtailsgeig5272 Ms. Geiger, I watched Mr. Mueller testify before Congress regarding his findings in his report on the Russian investigation. I found his answers to be clear, candid and free of political bias and hyperbole. This is a man who has dedicated himself to follow the law and serve his country over a number of administrations. The fact that is a Republican has had no bearing on how he has conducted himself as a federal prosecutor and head of the FBI under both the Bush and Obama administrations.

@ON YOUR ASS With all due respect, it would appear highly unlikely that all those individuals you noted who went to prison were essentially innocent victims. Unless of course, you are in possession of information that was unavailable to state or federal prosecutors. Rather than invest so much time in political mudslinging, it would more beneficial for reasonable people to just review the facts on record. Not liberal or conservative facts! Just the plain unvarnished truth free of political rancor and grandstanding.

Yeah, the essence of that nick name is nowhere in the book he wrote. He is highly intelligent, experienced, and a straight shooter. Not at all what that nickname suggests
