What a gal! I'm glad she lived long enough to see herself and her fellow 'computers' finally get the recognition they deserve! Katherine, you helped our country achieve one of its greatest moments ever, and we owe you our gratitude. Rest in peace.

and she lived to see NASA become a reality 50 years ago NASA did not exist, we have not landed on the moon yet no spacecraft got off the ground, and aviation was just getting started that all changed when a young woman named Katherine Johnson was hired at Langley for the National Committee for Aeronautics. Her job find a code that would allow our aircraft and spacecraft to fly and she succeeded. A few years later the NCA was abolished and Hatten and Arthur Clark were let go but stayed on as advisers NCA became NASA our space program and Katherine was there at its founding. Sheppard almost did not go into space because of problems with a faulty data recorder, Armstrong almost never landed on the Moon because of a program alarm, and many other missions almost ended in disaster had it not been for Katherine Johnson who radioed up the correct codes and the glitches were fixed in time for those spacecraft to complete their mission. In 2015 NASA named her old workplace after her and she got the Presidential Medal of Freedom. We will miss you Katherine and thank you for getting our space program started.

Bad Cattitude Sitting at the back of the bus was the least of her problems. When she had to go to the restroom, just as all the 3 black ladies, she had to leave the building walk all the way a block further where a restroom was assigned to “negro” at the time and then hurried back to her desk! That period in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s was when America was great to some of us! The baby boomers’ years!

David Ellis what are you talking about? most scientists use technology because it makes work easier. That way they can focus on the more complex stuff. Technology is not bad and helps you not to waste time and advance more. If she would’ve had those tools when she grew up, there’s no doubt she would’ve used them

Pisces Queen why waste so much time doing that when you can invest it solving more problems? Besides there’s very complex stuff that technology helps us calculate. Did you know that Plato and Socrates were against writing? But the thing is that we can only remember so much stuff and some calculations could take so long. Besides what you’re missing is that people still get taught in school how to do math, machines are only gonna help us with some things. We still have to think a lot when solving problems or how do you thinks scientists and engineers come up with solutions and new things every year? By the way based on your name, I hope you don’t believe in astrology lol because if you keep making an argument that someone is stupid because of the use of technology while you believe that stuff, that’d be ironic

I agree, black history shouldn't even be special or recognized as such. It should just belong to the overall story of America, from Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman all the way to President Barack Obama. Some of them, such as the great Martin Luther King Jr., belong in the same company as Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. All are true American heroes.

I remember learning about Katherine Johhson in grade school, from one of the Canadian engineers who were recruited by NASA for Apollo when the Avro Arrow project was suddenly, shockingly and insanely cancelled. The aircraft were cut up on the ramp, the entire staff was laid off, and all the engineers terminated within one day. Shortly afterwards, NASA recruited some of the top engineers and theoriticians from the Arrow project, which was a masterpiece of aerospace engineering. This particular teacher spent several years with NASA, then returned Canada to take up a teaching position at the University here. The city was growing so fast, and the schools so short of teachers that a number of University profs taught subjects like math part-time. I was lucky enough - how lucky I did not learn until much later - to be in one of this gentleman's classes. A superb mathematician himself, he used to talk about "the wizard of math lady" at NASA, Katherine Johnson. I didn't know much else about her - just that she was one of the few woman engineers and mathematicians at NASA, and that her skill left her colleagues in awe. Not until the film was made did I learn that she was an African-American; my math instructor's stories about her focused on her astounding mathematical skill and insight into the problems of calculating for the Apollo lunar missions. This was long before the advent of the electronic pocket calculator, or home computer - we did advanced math with tables of logarithms and slide rules. (Our part-time math teacher didn't see any reason for kids 8 or 9 years old _not_ to learn calculus, LOL) Katherine Johnson was someone whose skills were truly awe-inspiring, and still are today. I grew up "space mad" - I was in school as NASA went through the Mercury and Gemini programs, culminating in Apollo. There were so many people whose work was vital to the success of Apollo but whose contributions were and are unrecognized. I'm very glad that Katherine Johnson's work _was_ recognized and honored during her lifetime. I am sorry to learn of her passing, but thankful for the 101 years of her life which contributed so much excellence.
