Former Oregon Gov. and Portland Mayor Neil Goldschmidt has died, according to KATU's news partners at Willamette Week.
The Oregonian/OregonLive first reported his death.
Goldschmidt was a power player in Oregon politics from the early 1970s through the early 1990s. He became disgraced and ostracized from Oregon politics in the early 2000s after admitting he repeatedly raped a 14-year-old girl while serving as mayor of Portland in the 1970s.
While news of his sexual abuse against a teenager was secret from the public, Goldschmidt’s star soared.
After his time as Portland mayor, Goldschmidt was appointed the U.S. Secretary of Transportation by President Jimmy Carter in 1979.
When Carter’s presidency ended, Goldschmidt served as a senior executive at Nike.
In 1986, Goldschmidt was elected the 33rd governor of Oregon. He would choose to only serve one term.
After leaving the governor’s office, Goldschmidt would become a lobbyist for several companies.
In 2003, Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski appointed Goldschmidt to the Oregon Board of Higher Education. Goldschmidt resigned after admitting he had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old female in the 1970s.
In 2004, under pressure from Willamette Week, Goldschmidt publicly announced he had repeatedly raped a 14-year-old girl during his first term as the mayor of Portland. Willamette Week later revealed that the abuse continued through 1991. The Willamette Week article, written by Nigel Jaquiss, was awarded the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting.
Neil Goldschmidt was 83 years old.
